On the Newport trainstation platform.

We dominated from start to finish. Played some lovely stuff at times. They very rarely threatened and didn't do much except for Waite? (Bold bloke) reminds me of a smaller bolder McAtee.
Whole team I felt played brilliant, worked hard, kept the ball down and played out from the back as often as possible.
Both new lads looked very useful. Clifton unreal as always.

Dare I say it.... The referee for me got everything pretty much spot on apart from a few obvious shoves from our lads going for headers but I'm not going to complain about that. Unreal team performance and I'm very excited where this team is going. UTM

Brilliant performance. Controlled the game from start to finish and thoroughly deserved the win. There were so many good performances it's impossible to single players out, a proper team performance. Richardson and Simmonds both did well on their debuts, not bad when they've probably only had one training session.

Also, the strength in depth we now have is impressive. Wearne, Hunt and cropper unused subs. Green, Maher and Simmonds all coming on. And Pearson, Maguire-Drew and Pepple couldn't even make the squad. Exciting times!

Thoroughly deserved and we looked really strong in all areas. Morris’s gives real bite in midfield and was excellent first half with a great goal second.

Simmonds looked very sharp when he came on, quick feet and quick brain.

Promising stuff!

Saddo that I am I worked out that until today in eight visits to Newport I'd never even see Town score never mind win.
This team is going places. Composed, quick, neat with the ball, tenacious without it. Crocombe in total control of his box. Waterfall won everything in the air. Smith had Bogle in his pocket.
Good debut from Richardson.
Cracking shot for the first goal and another for an increasingly confident Harry Clifton-who was denied a second by a good save from the keeper.
Decent referee (N.B. Newport may disagree with that assertion).
Song of the day from the open air seats. Omar Bogle you chose the wrong team. Sorry to labour the point but I wouldn't have him instead of anyone we currently have.
Onward and upward.

Brilliant start away from home and now looking very promising for season head . Challenges now are first to find a system to break down teams who will come and defend and shithouse at Blundell Park and second to keep Hurst happy when others come knocking  on his door. Manage that and Division 1 is realistic

Thanks Ian.

Was Bogle applauded by the Town fans and did he applaud us? Did Hursty greet him at all?

No. No... Unsure. A couple of songs sang at him (for example your music is excrement etc). He totally ignored our existence, I'm sure if he even had a touch of the ball without falling over or even scored he may have chosen to.

He wasn't applauded. Made no gestures at all towards us that I could see. I saw no interaction between him and Hurst but that doesn't mean there wasn't any..

Bogle did clap the town fans at the end when walking off to be fair to him. Didn't walk right up to us which is fair enough, but did make the effort which he really didn't have to.

Well, an afternoon spent in traffic taking my Daughter back to Uni, nearly 5 hours from Northants to Egham and back.  I probably looked and sounded a right twãt screaming, shouting and laughing on the M25 car park but who cares.  Another fantastic result that I didn’t expect, fanbloomintastic 😊😊. Just got home. Fantastic team performance and from where I was sat in the posh seats (long story) the Town fans were immense. Away support was actually 409!

Morris was fabulous in midfield closely followed by Holohan. Richardson and Simmonds looked skilful and showed some nice touches. Clifton was industrious and aside from the goal (god knows what the keeper was doing) actually had decent end product. Waterfall excellent as ever and bar a couple of moments Smith looked solid too.

Overall we bullied them and never let them settle. We weren’t troubled at all until the last 5 when they piled forward but Crocombe looked calm and assured.

Man of the match Morris but they all played well.

It was soo good to see Bogle back to his old moaning, sulky self. On that showing, he wouldn't get near our team. He's never been a team player and never will.

Waterfall MotM for me, but the whole team was brilliant.

Did the ball cross the line ?  I asked 76 Grimsby Supporters and 42 from Newport.   The answer was 76 - 42 that it didn't.

Time for goal line technology in the EFL perhaps? If that had been at the other end, I think we would have felt pretty hard done by. But was it fully over the line? I have no idea, but it was a heck of a clearance anyhow.

Fantastic performance today. First off, we didn't look like the away team; completely dominated them, winning the ball high up the pitch and moving it around really nicely.

Holohan and Morris were both outstanding in the middle of the park, and what a hit by Morris for his goal. Clifton had his best game of the season for me; full of energy, positive going forward and some lovely link up play with Richardson, Taylor and Glennon. He'll have been disappointed not to have got that second goal.

Richardson looked lively, some lovely touches. My one criticism of him was that he probably looked to take one too many touches at times rather than get the shot away, but he'll learn. Kiernan huffed and puffed but was a little wasteful in the final third, but he's got a good understanding with Efete and if those 2 can both get firing on all cylinders (I don't think either of them have so far) then that'll be a formidable partnership that a lot of league 2 defensive won't know what to do with.

Waterfall is just immense, wins absolutely everything and is a great captain. I was extremely critical in the relegation season but he's like a man re-born. Smith mostly great too but there's always 1 or 2 loose passes in every game that we've luckily not been punished for really but he needs to stamp that out of his game.

Crocombe immense again, not really any worldy saves to make but he's just so composed on crosses. His distribution is so good too, we really don't need to be playing it out from the back to league 2 defenders when he can ping it so well. Can we stop doing that please Hursty? (minor complaint). Simmonds looked a talent when he came on, based on that he might prove to be the best signing of deadline day. Love seeing a lad with the confidence to knock the ball over the defenders head and go, having only been on the pitch a minute. Did really well to set up the second Clifton chance too.

There were a couple of Newport fans previewing the game on DN35 this week and they were a little dismissive of us and really played themselves up as automatic promotion contenders. If they're automatic promotion contenders then we should be looking at the top of the table rather than over our shoulders. Bogle looked a forlorn figure for them at times, isolated and feeding on scraps. His frustration came across a couple of times and we know how much he likes a sulk! Seemed to spend almost as much time flinging himself to the ground as he did doing anything with the ball, although I was always nervous when he did get it in/around the area he doesn't look the player he was when he left us.

Onto the next one, Crewe will be a different kind of challenge to when we faced them in the cup but we certainly have nothing to fear. UTM

Rustling the net no, it looks like on the replay when the ball bounced it was over the line and bounced outwards but you'd never see that without replays.

If he carry’s on with his early season form how long will it be before Harry attracts interest from other clubs with deep pockets?

Wouldn’t be surprised if he is not being followed closely by a few clubs, when you look at his stats on ground covered, goals from midfield and his ability to stay fit and his versatility regarding positions he can be seen as a massive asset.
I always thought it was more important to secure his signature on a new contract than the unfortunate Ben Fox, some players are just cursed with bad luck regarding injuries and some are just relentlessly fit, Clifton has been remarkable in his durability and fitness and still improving, some on here have unfairly targeted him but he is making them eat their words and long may it continue

I would’ve struggled to see it go in the goal nearest the town fans let alone the other end, the times I’ve been to Newport!

Always good to read the Just Back reports from away games.

Some comments from Newport fans read tonight”

“Completely outplayed.  Grimsby well worth the 3 points”.

“Over-run at times and exposed down our left side first half by a very good winger”.

“A very good Grimsby outfit”.

“Grimsby looked good and had pace”.

Not under-rated by fans but under-rated by some fans. Today was a great example of what he brings energy wise but also how he fits into a team shape. Looks increasingly confident down the left hand side. I don’t  know what his best position is but I do know that Hurst understands
the best way to use him game by game. He was excellent today and all Town fans Shiism be thankful he chose to stay rather than go.

Literally had no time to do anything.
I really like the look of the 2 new lads, I felt Orsi didn't get involved much but I guess we was under the cosh a bit when he came on

Regarding Clifton, I know the majority think he is not the most technically gifted player, but very good rumours during the summer had Forest Green very interested in him.

RE Harry, he literally turned down offers from league one already.

That’s why it blows my mind that some people have to be seen to criticism him at any opportunity. The lad is a huge asset to the team.

Yes, he is a huge asset to the team, but I fail to see why he keeps getting played out wide on the left, his left foot crosses are very poor, and we have one or two in the squad whose natural position is that of a winger.

Well, we seem to have won a hell of a lot of games with him playing wide, so as long as that trend carries on I’m fine with it.

I guess it’s similar to Hursts first stint, he has always favoured that “lop sided’ MF set up.  Unless we have to chase the game I think he likes the security of a player who is comfortable giving extra central cover

It’s hard to argue with the selections on the wing at the minute because we’re winning games. It’s tempting to say that Wearne and JMD would give us far more attacking impetus and maybe we’d have stuck 5 past them yesterday. However, the realist in me says despite Kiernan and Clifton’s limitations with the final ball, their overall contributions mean we’re winning games.

There will be days when we don’t put away our chances and their contributions will be questioned, but whilst we’re winning it’s hard to put a case in for anybody else (although Kiernan must be clinging onto his place at the minute).

Well then, that unbiased Newport fan is either clueless or he meant their right side, in which case he was talking about Clifton, who was widely panned before the 77th minute last Saturday, but now is 3 goals in 105 minutes Lionel Clifton. Funny old game

Kiernan worker hard no doubt about it, always made himself available too and looked threatening. The trouble was that appearance of threat never quite got translated into any end product. I think town fans wouldn't be quite so quick to point that out if we hadn't already had an entire season of sousa doing the exa t same thing, so are quicker to identify it.

It's not that kiernan isn't trying or giving 100% he undoubtedly is, more that people might feel their could be a better option for the team. When the team wins though it fully justifys the selection from a team perspective.

I’ve no doubt Kiernan did his bit yesterday but his end product was very poor, he’ll know that and Hurst will know it too. There’s no shame in it, it was just a bad half for him but to say otherwise (when by the sounds of it you didn’t watch the game) is confusing for me.

Our biggest chances came in the second half when we looked to get it down the left for Glennon to put in (who also won’t be all that chuffed with his deliveries first half).

Kiernan noticeably covered for Efete a lot yesterday which as mentioned a lot, is why I think him & Clifton are first choice atm.

Possibly why Hurst only brought him in for 6 months to size him up? Got a very Nathan Arnold type feel to him, possibly a match winner on his day but can't quite hold down his quality for prolonged periods. Arnold never managed to impress in L2 from what I remember but was fabulous for us in Non-League.

The Humberside commentary said several times that our right side was dominant and the main threat. When that happens your average league 2 right sided wide and player is going to waste some opportunities. It is when there is nothing happening down one side or the other that there is a need to be critical.

Agree to a degree but our right side in the first half was the reason we were so dominant, and a big part of that was the fact their wing back couldn't handle Kiernan. Put a Maguire-Drew or Wearne on instead and I don't think we dominate anywhere near as much. But of course, they him and Efete have to have better end product.

PH likes Kiernan and Clifton because they both do the hard yards. They are fundamental to the system we play, which keeps us solid, if unspectacular.

The team is the sum of it's parts and at the moment it's working, so we can't really criticise too much.

Just the one?

Left footed players also shank crosses when playing on the left.

Clifton is an inverted winger. Lot's of teams have them, but not always on both sides. One can cut in on to his favoured foot and also drift inside to support midfield or get into goalscoring positions, which Harry does brilliantly. The one on the other side is more of a crosser of the ball and stays wide most of the time. Glennon can overlap on the left and provide good crosses, knowing that Harry will be covering him.

It's not the 1950's.

I don't need to have watched it to understand how the average football fan thinks. The contrast between an opposition fan (which is pertinent) saying Kiernan was a big threat and a lot of Town fans (twitter mostly, no surprises there) making out that he was all-round shite, is what I found amusing/bemusing.

it wasn't aimed at everyone criticising any aspect of his game as it's clear his end product wasn't there yesterday but as HerveJosse mentioned, final ball is just one (albeit obviously important) aspect of the attacking wide mid's job, especially with the way PH likes to employ them, but it's going to be of variable quality at this level. It's promising that he was getting into those positions in the first place (which is what the Newport fan recognised). Hopefully it starts coming off for him soon as I appreciate the endeavour he's shown so far.

This was taken from Newport football forum about their squad.

"I also expected changes at HT (the injury enforced one aside). The issue there is you look at our bench and there is nothing there, you think about a change of shape but 4 at the back has a centre half playing our of position and it was already effectibely 1 up front for much of the first half. Regardless of what Rowberry says, we do not have strength in depth, we barely have 11 good league 2 quality players even if you include both goalkeepers. Through his recruitment he has given himself the problem of making silk purses. Fingers crossed".

Thats what is going to be the difference between the teams that will be towards the top, the quality of the squad, its not about all about the starting eleven, but the quality of the subs and players and being flexible to change the formation during the game.

When you look at our squad Paul got that about right, we are talking about Paul being able to keep the players happy not making the squad and their are some players that could be in the starting eleven or least on the bench.

Thats why its important to get the right character of player, who accepts that its about the whole squad and may have to wait their turn, be it an injury to another player or pushing hard in training, its a long season and everyone is going to be required at some point in the season.

I'm over the moon with the positive start to the season, but I will be even happier, once I see the goals start coming from strikers.

Sounds like the new signings look quite exciting, and I look forward to seeing them on Saturday. Fingers crossed that the goals start coming from strikers soon, because I worry that the early season success won't be sustainable until we can hang our hats on strikers scoring goals for us.

Is it too early to dream?

Just back from a long weekend visiting my daughter in London. Was at the Taylor Hawkins tribute at Wembley on Saturday afternoon/evening and stood up and celebrated Harry’s goal like it had just been scored at Wembley in front of me (much to my daughter and wife’s embarrassment). What’s the chances I might be doing that for real in May? (Celebrating a Town goal at Wembley that is, not embarrassing my wife and daughter which is pretty much a given).

FFS that is nit picking to the extreme! At least put together a constructive argument, based on more than one incident, that supports your view . Maybe if you spent more time actually watching football and less time in the synthetic world of Football Manager then you might have a better knowledge of coaching and the real game.

Lol, you're funny, I just pointed out that one attempted cross to headline that fault.  I have seen him mess up crosses many times with his left foot.  You have absolutely no knowledge whatsoever about my football knowledge but over my 76 years on this planet, I might have picked up a little knowledge here and there around the world.  BTW, was you ever asked to sign for a Cypriot 1st Division side and was you also privileged to play against the Cypriot International side during their warm up for the 1974 FIFA World Cup qualification rounds?  Just wondering...........
