Last season it was THREE subs out of FIVE on the bench in EFL
20/21 season it was FIVE subs out of SEVEN on bench.

I heard that there was going to be a vote to change back to FIVE from SEVEN. Anyone heard anything as I can not find anything on web?

They'll be voting on at the EFL annual urine up abroad.

Thankfully we've got owners who won't coincide the event with a family wedding and not bother reading the papers before voting on key issues...

It was 3 from 7 in the EFL last season. The Premier League was also 3 from 7 which was mainly due to the “other 14” wanting to punish the “greedy 6” who were in favour of staying at 5.

The Premier League has already voted to go to 5 substitutes from 9 on the bench from the start of the 2022/23 season and the EFL are voting on the matter at their annual AGM/holiday in Portugal.

Times must be tough at the EFL. Just checked and their AGM is today in Chester.

Re: 5 substitutes…

Back in October, football’s rule makers, the International Football Association Board's Football and Technical Advisory Panels (FAP-TAP) recommended all competitions move to allowing the use of 5 substitutes.

So remaining at only 3 next season would be an odd choice and put the EFL out of step with the rest of the world.

How football changes.  We could have done with ONE in the 1939 FAC Cup semi-final at Old Trafford.  George Tweedy, our England keeper,  was ill or injured before the game.  Our deputy keeper went off injured during the game.

No subs allowed in those days.  We were hit very hard.  We played with 10 men and no keeper.  No wonder we lost 5-0.

If it goes to five, will Battersby get to sit on the bench?

At the start of the 16/17 season, before Hurst left, we always had a sub 'keeper on the bench, be it Warrington or Henderson.

With 7 subs sitting on the bench, regardless if you can use 3 or 5, there's no reason to not have a back-up 'keeper as one of them.

I may be a little old-fashioned, but I think 5 subs allowed is just too many. Fully half a team of changes and it takes a lot of chance out of the game and that is a really important part of football. 3 from 7 would seem to be the better option to me.

Of course, all that the 5 from 9 will do is ensure that the biggest clubs with benches packed with full internationals will win even more of their games. A couple of injuries or a red card wouldn't be a problem for them as they will be able to replace with top class players.

You only have  3 substitution tokens to make your 5 changes though. So you can only stop the game 3 times like it is now. NB. You don’t have to use a token for a half-time substitution, so if you make a change at half-time the remaining 4 changes can still be spread over 3 “tokens”.

I would think there will be another keeper brought in so Battersby can be sent out for a full season to get regular games.

that would tie in with a thought that's going round that Hurst might go for  2 keepers of equal stature to battle it our for the keeper's jersey . That would mean Crocombe being retained and someone else (Rory Watson????? ) coming in

i think you said previously that in the FL clubs have to have 3 registered keepers. I was told battersby wasn't getting anew contract, so maybe the promotion saved his bacon?

5 from 9 for me with the caveat that 2 players in the squad must be under 20. That will give lots more youngster a chance to get some minutes under there belt and experience the first team.
