Horribly defensive and a serious risk from Southgate. If he played a team that went for it who went out, then it'd be slightly easier to stomach but if this lineup doesn't work out then he's going to be hounded for it. To have that array of attacking talent sat on the bench is criminal IMO.

Regardless of the team, you just have to hope we can do enough to turn over the Germans and that's all that matters.

I would prefer to see Foden start instead of Saka, nothing against Saka but that would be my choice.

I see if the rumours are true Southgate is going to keep his job no matter the result, don't get that myself.

If that team is correct then surely Saka will play right and Sterling left, so both are inverted.

That is a weird selection. After 5 minutes it will degenerate into 7-0-3. What’s the idea? Try and bore the opposition to death and hope for penalties?

Germany had 62% possession vs France. 58% vs Portugal. 75% vs Hungary.

Even if we played Grealish and Foden in midfield, England would still probably have less than 40% possession. That isn’t where the game will be won and lost.

The match hinges on two things.

One, can England defend with effectively 7 defenders (Rice and Phillips both played CB occasionally last season). Two, can our three forwards (plus Shaw and Trippier) take their chances when we turn the ball over and attack quickly on transitions.

We will get chances. None of Ginter, Hummels or Rüdiger can run and their midfielders are even slower.

We need our best finisher and two most direct, fastest wide players on the pitch for this match. It looks like that is what Southgate has done.

The other point to note is that formation doesn’t necessarily have to be defensive as long as Shaw and Trippier are allowed and prepared to play higher up the pitch. If they retreat into a back five plus the double pivot, then yes it becomes a 7-0-3.
