Completely random. I know they have managed to train together but it’s not the same as playing. So as a group they haven’t played together for over 2 months and they have 2 games before the competition starts so he plays a random team with most of the subs not even in the squad. Why the hell would he not play what will be pretty much his strongest team in the first half or maybe an hour of each match and then bring a load of subs on.

Don’t get it.

Because most of those players have just played European finals in the last week and haven't had a break since the season ended.

We used to play on Sussex Rec every night in the summer

HT 0-0

Can't say anyone particularly impressed first half, tough watch so far.

Pretty turgid stuff. We do need a bit of pace on the pitch I think. Maybe Sancho for Lingard just to give them something different to think about.

I’m not convinced by Trippier at left back, he’s solid but doesn’t give you as much going forward. I like Bellingham although he hasn’t done too much tonight. Grealish continues to draw fouls and looks great at times but hasn’t actually created much.

Hopefully the second half will be better...

Grealish puts himself into Southgate’s Croatia starting XI thoughts. Draws players in, wins freekicks in the right areas. Started and had a big part in the goal too.

Lads - this was the second team. I’d only expect Kane, Rice Pickford and possibly Grealish (now that TAA faces a double leg amputation) to be anywhere near the starting XI for the Croatia game.

Pretty much what I expected. Mostly fringe players in a pre tournament friendly where players are cautious about getting injured and not giving it 100%.

The best part was when Calvert-Lewin leapt  6 ft. in the air and kicked the defender in the head who was stood up at the time -not far off Olympic high jump standard

As predicted, a dour affair, a music and match side with players that haven’t made the squad and the odd player that will be a sub...

All the furore surrounding Arnold and he may be out anyway...

After Kane and Jordan Henderson, Grealish should be the next most nailed on player in the starting XI for me. Quality player, it's clear Southgate has issues with him though that aren't related to his ability.

If everyone's fit, I'd go with this team for when we need to get on the ball and dominate possession:

Pickord
Trippier--Stones--Maguire--Chilwell
Henderson--Rice
Foden--Mount--Grealish
Kane

Then add in some pace with Sterling and Sancho for Foden and Mount if we need to be a bit more direct. Central defence is a huge area of concern with both our best CBs having a clanger in them.

There was an anonymous Tweet (sent to @fesshole) from a "professional footballer" who said he had loved the grounds being empty; there was no abuse and you didn't get slaughtered for a small mistake by a stadium full of people. Just play the game and go home. He finished by saying that a lot of football fans are "utter w*nkers".

I don't know if it really is from a pro (but it 'felt' honest). I don't share the view. Just thought it was an interesting perspective.

So you don't rate the kid who scored - one of the more difficult goals to score from that position?

Saka? He's decent yeah, but Foden,  Mount and Grealish are on  another level comparatively. Saka is one for a few years down the line.
