I equate anonymous keyboard warriors slagging off individual players with clowns yelling abuse from the stands in the good old days when we could actually go to games. I've never understood how they think they are helping the team they say they support when they do their best to undermine the confidence of their own players. It's never helped and it never well. The only team it helps is the opposition.

I have only ever shouted at one Town player, at Wembley Brodie said I thought he was a disgrace to the club. Day later he'd left. I wish Joe all the best. I thought he tried hard for a struggling team. He came here to help us fight relegation.

Reminds me of when I used to go with my old man in the late 80’s and stand in the Harrington Street corner. There was a bloke in there would spend entire matches abusing Kev Jobling. I don’t know what Jobling had ever done to him because it can’t have genuinely been a football grudge. I can hear him now shouting “You’re a disgrace Jobling”. Never seemed to affect the player. Happy times.

Joblin occasionally boozed in my local nice guy and decent player on his day, can think of a few players whose off field behaviour was far worse than his

I can go back to the late 50's and remember Mick Cullen. He always seemed to get a lot of stick from the Osmond end. I remember some guy with a very loud voice calling him every time he got the ball.

The life of a lower league footballer isn’t that great IMO. Can’t remember where I exactly heard this but the average career in L1&2 is 7 years . That’s not a lot when you consider the length of time invested to get to their first pro contract. And then you have to consider the actual amount of money they’re going to be on . Not that lucrative at our level . Then there’s the possibility of getting a serious injury whilst on a one year contract. And once the careers over , what do they do ? Most probably didn’t plan for this day when they were the star player at school and dreamed of PL wages that never materialised. No wonder there’s mental health issues. If my son was offered the chance to play lower league football professionally and I honestly thought that’s all he’d be I think I’d advise him to get a proper job and play NLS/NLN .

I'd tell my son to play in the League and spend his afternoons doing a degree mostly paid for by the PFA. Not really relevant though as he's currently doing a long stretch in Bamako Prison.

That's the best advice. I don't know wages now but in the late 80's I worked with a chap whose son played for Boston. He told me his son was on £200/wk then, plus he also had a full time job. Best of both worlds, carry out your ambition and also have a secure non football future.
