Didn't realise he was born in Skegness.

A shrewd signing by Shankly when he was Liverpool boss signing him from Scunny for £18,000

61 senior England caps, would have been more if Shilton hadn't been around at the time.

Announced today.   After illness (details not reported).  Very sad.

He was born in Skegness or Boston I think.

Great rivalry between him and Shilts. Definitely one of the England greats.

Green (3), Hill (3) Tees.

Sad to see his death. Poor lad never stood a chance that night!

He was a very different keeper to Peter Shilton. Shanks signed him to replace Tommy Lawrence and Clemence  spent time in the reserves waiting his chance. He was trained to be a sweeper keeper like Lawrence and like Grobellar later on,  whereas Shilts was more conventional. To be honest I always thought Ray was prone to handling mistakes but made up for that by his vision in coming out of the area for the ball.

Condolences to his family. I wonder if he had relatives still in Lincolnshire?

Remember in the 1979 cup match, when we sang “Scunthorpe reject” to him as he came out after half time to the Anfield Road end goal. He gave us a wave and had a good laugh.
