Shanks signed him to replace Tommy Lawrence and Clemence  spent time in the reserves waiting his chance. He was trained to be a sweeper keeper like Lawrence and like Grobellar later on,  whereas Shilts was more conventional. To be honest I always thought Ray was prone to handling mistakes but made up for that by his vision in coming out of the area for the ball. Condolences to his family.
