Makes sense with the Palace connection but surely he’s way more than we could afford.

Skilful player but far to injury prone. Was a Premier League player in his day.
Stay clear. If he plays 20 times a season it would surprise me.

Given that he's a free agent he's on £0 a week. I think we could afford to make a better offer than that.

Only slightly!

Given his position and the wide attacking players we have at the club already, I would think other positions would be of a greater priority

Won’t stop him asking for a decent wage. However that theory will probably start to kick in next week when some players realise that they’re not worth as much on the market as they were pre-Covid with 1 week until the season starts. Sure we’ll see an influx of decent signings, however, I can’t see Scannell being one of them.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

This is where Clifton’s futile allegiance to Wales will backfire on him, I’m afraid. I was told when Jolley was in charge that he was told he would not be considered for the 1st team if he went on Wales duty, which appalled me at the time, but I sort of get it now. As much as we love Harry, we need him more than Wales do, and this call up is not gonna help his career.

Absolutely no logic in that whatsoever. A call up won’t hinder/affect his career at all. He’ll get to spend time with diff people, management and players, most of which operate at a higher level. He’ll learn.

Be it here or elsewhere - he’ll develop. If it’s whilst with us - great. If it’s elsewhere - still great. Fact is he’s a Townplayer, come through the system - and a call up is only good for him and the club.

I’m bemused as to why anyone would think it’s a hindrance

Harry’s a big boy and entitled to make his own decisions. He can either aspire to play football at an international level or fear being dropped by his League Two club in his absence.

Which of those two attitudes do you think have made more successful people? Neither offer a guaranteed path to success, but I know what I’d want firing my belly.

If I was a player, I’d take the call up, no doubt. I’ve always felt that way about international football. But unless he pulls his socks up, he could be out of the league in a year. And so could we. I hope neither of those things happen, by the way.

So in a nutshell, you’d do exactly what you’ve just criticised Harry Clifton for doing. I don’t think I get football forums anymore.

Unless I’ve missed it, Pep and Lampard haven’t said that they’ll only sign players on the way up and won’t be bringing in players who are on the way down and likely to be earning less than in previous years. Merely pointing out an inconsistency in what Holloway said (if he were to sign Scannell).

And anyway, did you really just compare Scannell with Messi and Thiago Silva! Hardly an appropriate comparison given that both are/were still playing in the top flight. Compared to Scannell who has a bad injury record and is falling down the leagues like a lead balloon.

I would never give a player advice, and I am indeed a hypocrite on this point, I’m just saying it’s not helping town or his own career much, in my opinion. Although I could be wrong. I wouldn’t have thought anyone else, including managers, will have noticed that Harry, or anyone else for that matter, is in a Wales U21 squad.

No different to Embleton being called up and missing games whilst with us... an international call up is an international call up and all the prestige that goes with it, whether its Clifton for Wales, Claire for the Republic, Davison / Agnew for Northern Ireland.

When a player for Grimsby gets recognised at international level it should be applauded.

It is a reasonable assumption that a player being selected at international level will benefit from playing with better players and his confidence should improve.  The Club should be the winner overall, despite absences for matches.  Any transfer value could also be enhanced.

Sounds like the deal is done. Could be a cracking signing if he stays fit. I'm not sure how the likes of Williams, Rose and Scannell are fitting in with our Covid-depleted wage structure but they're higher calibre signings than I was expecting a few weeks ago. Nice work by all concerned.

I bet not playing due to corona has done alot of players struggling with injury the world of good, extended rest instead of rushing back, and everyone else has just as little match fitness so they get to restart on a level playing field

Will probably be our best signing if he does come.

A wealth of Championship experience with Palace and Huddersfield and still only 29.

Not sure why people are worried about this one just because previous club didn't go as planned?

He played 11 years, nearly 300 games at championship level i believe for Palace & Huddersfield?

He's played with Holloway in Championship, and if he want's to manage him again, i have more faith in him, than blackpool fans

Great signing. I wonder if Ollie would play him as a wide forward, as the 433 system worked well last year.

I’m expecting a 532/352 looking at the signings to be honest but we’ll find out come the season

4-3-3 / 4-2-3-1. We only have 3 senior centre-backs so I can't see us playing 3 at the back.

Wrong assumption by the reporter on this one putting 2+2 together and making 7..... bit like GMBs coverage of the Covid-19 crisis...to quote, reporter states :

"And Sean says that he jumped at the chance to join his old Palace boss."

Scannell is quoted as saying:
“I’ve known Ollie for a few years now and to play for a manager like Ollie is all that I’ve wanted for. As soon as I spoke to him I wanted to come straight away.”
Kind says he's never played for Ollie but always wanted to play for a manager like Ollie...

Ohman
Waterfall
Pollock
Mohsni

I’d prefer 4 at the back myself but not sure we have the full backs. We’ll tell with more signings.

Full-backs...

Right-Back - Luke Hendrie, Elliott Hewitt, Joseph Starbuck & Cameron Painter
Left-Back - Danny Preston, Joey Hope, Bilel Moshni

I think once DP is confirmed we're pretty well covered at full-back.

If Preston is confirmed then maybe but I (personally) see Mohsni as a centre half.

Starbuck, painter and hope are unknown quantities (as is Preston to some degree)

You have to remember Preston has only played a handful of games at Conference North level. He could be the next Glennon but I wouldn’t pin all our hopes on him.

I still think we need another experienced centre forward and the fact we tried to get Theo Robinson makes me think Holloway feels the same way.

Really pleased with the Scannell signing and we now have some excellent, experienced players in the squad to augment the younger lads. Looks a good mix and i think we may see a few more come in yet.

Seems the pulling power of IH is working judging by the comments of the signings so far. Most mentioning him being a key factor in their decisions.

We lost some key players over the summer, but i'm more than happy with the replacements. Still think we need a mobile, experienced striker and some cover in defence, but we look a lot more healthy now than we did.

It's starting to look like the kind of set up where goalscoring might not be an issue. Pacy wingers, decent midfield, and we need just one of the forwards we've signed to be an uncut gem and we're rocking.

The photos on the club website of Danny Rose and Sean Scannell make them look very similar but one has a shorter haircut.

Can we be certain that both of them have been signed and it's not mind games by Holloway. Mark my words, you'll never see the 2 of them play together in the same team.....

Wright played as a wing back to good effect in the Scunny game. I also think Tilley can play as a wing back.

Most wingers and full backs these days can play the wing back role. The distinction between wingers and full backs is less apparent in the modern game.

Need good awareness and discipline as a wing back. I've never seen Town play the system well and can only think of Forest Green who use it in League 2.

Town played it pretty well in the early part of Slade Mk1 with Ashley Sestanovitch on the right and somebody I can’t remember (Crowe?) on the left. They had “the Frenchman” in the middle of the park and Reddy up front.  For a few games it looked promising but it leaked goals, Sestanovitch blew a few fuses and left and Slade went with 4 or 5 at the back.

Bradford fans were up in arms about Billy Clarke resigning for them. And they assumed they’d walk the league last year so don’t think we should get too carried away with their delusions  of grandeur!

IH turned us from a shot shy team that couldn’t score into one of the better teams in the league over the last 10-12 games we played. I trust him if he thinks Scannell will make us better.

McDermott played right wing back in that system, Sestanovich was part of a very attacking 3 man front line with Reddy and Parkinson.

Let us hope so!

My two pennies is that Scannell on paper fits in with Holloway's ethos of attacking football and hopefully he will have free reign to terrify plenty of L2 fullbacks this season.

I think all the players Holloway signed last season (Clarke, Grandin, Tilley and Garmston) were a success (to varying degrees) so I would trust his judgement more than opposition fans at this stage.

But in your defence some times these opposition fans opinions are more than valid...Sam Kelly anyone?

I don’t think there’s any doubting that he is a player with ability. The issue I have is whether he’s someone that we are able to rely on given his injury problems. ‘Injury prone’ is something that keeps popping up whenever he’s mentioned.

According to Soccerbase, he’s only played 197 games since 2007. That equates to an average of 15 games per season...

Someone suggested IH could play a back 3, but we don't have many centre halves.  If he does play a back 3, Hendrie could play there.  I meant no more than that.

I'd rather have Max Wright bombing down the wing than Luke Hendrie, and I'd rather Luke Hendrie do some defending than Max Wright.

According to Soccerbase, he’s only played 197 games since 2007. That equates to an average of 15 games per season...

He has played over 300 games, it might be 197 starts

Not to sure how accurate Soccerbase is going back that far. Personally I prefer to use Transfermarkt for these nerdy kind of stats.

In his career so far he has made a grand total of 368 appearances of which 239 were starts and 129 were sub appearances.

If you want to know as well he has been in 441 match day squads. I would say to be in 441 match day squads at 29 years old is not so indicative of being injured all the time. Last season at two clubs he was in 30 match day squads so a good two thirds of the season he was involved, before considering the early end to the season!

Serious question...

Is Ohman training with the club?

I watched him play, alongside Pollock, in last Saturday's triallist match...

I don't get what this "injury prone" remark is all about. For example,  breaking a leg is part of playing football. If a player has been unlucky to break his leg twice in quick sucscession, he would have missed a fair few games. Does that make him injury prone or just unlucky?

Same goes for "his legs have gone". Pirlo is an example of where a player would have been too old or his legs have gone for some on here.

Very good signing in my opinion. We have plenty of attacking options now.

Like most fans (and IH) I feel we're two or three players short of a full squad given the rigours they'll be put through in the first couple of months, but we're looking a little healthier in terms of size and quality now.

Eh!

A player with vast experience at a higher level and only 29. Who are you expecting us to sign for a League 2 team with a 1.5 million budget?

McDermott played right wing back in that system, Sestanovich was part of a very attacking 3 man front line with Reddy and Parkinson.

You are quite right. A bit of an odd bod Sestanovich wasn’t he?
