So based on last night, for those who went, would you offer him a contract?

I think Hurst will play him against Oldham, see how he fares and then decide if he is worth keeping on or not

He is only asking for views. If this is a pointless thread then we might as well all shut up. It got your attention and input for what it was worth. I,m interested to know the views of other Fishy members I thought that this was the whole point of the Fishy.

Hard to make a definitive decision based on 45 mins of football. It depends who else is available, but judging from Hurst's slow progress in this area, clearly there aren't many strikers about. Looked good though.

He could potentially be very useful once he is match fit.

He held the ball up well, which allowed the midfield to join in with the attack, he linked up with his support players well. He won a lot in the air and would have had a goal but for a good save from the keeper.

It's no coincidence that we didn't seem to create an awful lot in the Gainsborough half once Vernon went off as the ball wouldn't really stick.

I don't know if this bloke's any good or not but I do know pace alone isn't enough. You need a link player with a football brain to bring your pacy players into the game. Even Michael Reddy needed a Lump.

Wasn't there last night so can't judge. But surely to assess a player, we need to see them play at our level or slightly above.  It's not a pop, because as I said I wasn't there. But surely you can't expect the club to offer a contact based on 45 mins against against Gainsborough !!

I personally think this would be a great signing for the likes of Jackson and Bogle to play off. He has experience of playing at a higher level with physical presence. He isn't going to score you 20 goals a season but he will help others in the team get into forward positions with his hold up play. Reminds me of Gary Jones and look how Reddy improved playing off him.

I think sometimes we get hung up too much about having a ’30 goal a season striker’. I remember in Buckley’s first 2 promotion season’s, the maximum a striker scored was 14 but we had players all over the pitch who contributed because of the likes of Livvo, Neil Woods and Tony Ree’s would hold up play to allow the likes of Child’s, Gilbert, Groves, Cunnington etc to get into forward positions.

And let’s be honest, if you find a striker who for most of his career has scored 20 goals a season plus, he isn’t likely to be playing in League 2 is he?

Seems a useful player puts himself around a bit, wins headers or at least he did against last nights opposition, early days yet to say due to him having only forty five minutes, probably not match fit yet or why would we not give him the full ninety minutes?
Team looked better first half with him in the team, second half was a shambles.

Read a lot of positive stuff about him on Twitter, and particularly the way Town played with him in the team first 45 minutes. Will be interested to see if/how he plays against Oldham.

He looked very good last night. More importantly, the first half was the best I have seen Bogle play this pre-season and I don't think that was a coincidence.

With the amount of youth and lack of league experience across the front 4 (or 3) this would be a welcome signing. Having watched him last night, he linked play very well and held the ball up. With two/three weeks of hard training he should prove a valuable asset. Only hope he is not winding his career down and he still has the drive and work ethic. No reason to believe he hasn't, just seen too many ageing players fleece town over the last 15 years (admittedly very few under Hurst).

Shrewsbury fan I know has said this

Got a raw deal from supporters here because he doesn't score much, but he certainly offers you a physical presence, good in the air, strong hold up play and intelligent player, his experience would prove handy, a great bloke aswell.

THIS COULD BE A DOUBLE PRONG SIGNING IF IT COMES OFF - STRONG PRESENCE UP FRONT AND AT SET PIECES ONCE FULLY FIT - FOOTBALLING BRAIN TO TAKE UP GOOD POSITIONS AND SHOW OTHERS WHERE TO BE LOOKING TO RECEIVE THE BALL - CHANCES FOR JACKSON AND BOGLE TO LEARN FROM AN EXPERIENCED PLAYER - 8 TO 10 GOALS - OPTIONAL EXTRA !

He could turn both other forwards into 20+ players by assists and training ground coaching.

If he gives Bogle the confidence he needs on the field to score more goals, he'll earn his keep.

He would be an ideal signing, hardly played below championship and League 1 so would bring some great experience to our young forwards and wingers. Sign him up

I thought he had a decent outing and was a bit surprised when he didnt come out for the 2nd half. It wasnt for his performance so i assume he hasnt played much at all this summer and was blowing out of his bottom.

As another poster has said he held the ball up well, won his share of headers and laid the ball off intelligently to bring others into play. I thought Bogle for one benefited from his presence on the pitch

He is not quick and his career stats suggest whilst he has a goal in him he is not prolific.

He has played most of his football in League 1 and the SPL with stints in the Championship as well.

I saw him play a few times for Blackpool earlier in his career. He is an honest hard working pro.

I said on another thread a few days ago we needed some League experience up front. To that extent he meets that criteria. Almost 400 League appearances. He could be a useful addition who depending on appearances could notch double figures. But imo he doesnt answer all our attacking needs and we would still need another forward.

Just been speaking to a guy from Oldham, he reckons Scott Vernon was thought of pretty highly when he was there (one of their memorable players); he was surprised that he'd require a trial and that it must be down to fitness. He's not followed him since he went up to Scotland (apparently a few of their players did at the same time), but he thinks he would be very useful at our level.

Had my elderly father in law with me that day, he wasn't a fan as he wasn't from Grimsby so I thought I would show him a proper football team, shame it turned out to be Oldham.

Left a few minutes early to beat the mad dash to get away and missed their 6th goal.

I think, all things considered and on balance, this would potentially be a good signing. Obvious assets - wide experience of league and SPL football, the majority of which is at a higher level than this, presence and physical strength, target/link up play, scored goals at a higher level....

Looking at his record and although it isn't great with Shrewsbury, the worst he's done before that was a goal every five games which isn't bad at all really. Plus all his career bar one season has been at a higher level. If he can add 10 goals but his hold up play allows us to get more men forward then he'll be a great signing. Quietly pleased with this one.

It has taken the GT until this morning to catch up with ideas on the Fishy.

Cribbed from this thread?

Can't think of anything decent to write? Never mind, son. Go look on the Fishy, they know more about football on there than you do anyway.

What a load of balderdash!

Saw enough of him Wednesday to see he had the positioning style of Podge with a bit of (for the better) strength and nastiness.
Should do well when properly match fit.

I was fortunate enough to miss that game. It was on a Sunday I think and I'd been over to The Isle Of Wight for a few days and we were driving back. We had Radio 5 on and they were giving regular updates and everytime they went back there was another goal. When they said "And there's been another goal at Boundary Park" they didn't say who for until they went over to the reporter, so I was always thinking we would have got one!

What a load of balderdash!

Who broke the news initially about Vernon? Who identified him first? Who commented at h-t that he and Bogle had linked up well

Wasnt anyone of the fishy but the much maligned Telewag reporter!!

What a load of balderdash!

I know who broke the story. If you can just manage to read my post properly, read the GT piece properly then you just might possibly understand what I'm on about.

The key signing of the new season probably. As long as he stays fit i think will get enough points to stay out of trouble while we adjust to playing at a higher level.

It has taken the GT until this morning to catch up with ideas on the Fishy.

Cribbed from this thread?

[urlhttp://www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/could-vernon-bring-out-the-best-in-town-s-star-bogle/story-29562357-detail/story.html][/url]

Can't think of anything decent to write? Never mind, son. Go look on the Fishy, they know more about football on there than you do anyway.

They probably know how to hyperlink though.

He may only score about a dozen goals himself but i predict the impact on those around him will be imense. Our posession in our opponents half will be greater this season as he holds the ball upfront for us. Think of all the times we used to hoof the ball upfield previously only for it to come back and put us under more pressure. This means more scoring chances will naturally increase ,Bogle will become a much more effective striker and the whole team will be able to play as an effective unit with much more options than last season. Wonder if PH can get another signed like him?

Thinking back to last season I'd say that Amond was so much more effective when playing with Bogle than when he played with Hoban. Similarly Bogle was less effective when paired with Tomlinson than when he played with Amond..

So it's all about who complements who to best effect. Vernon sounds like he might combine well with Bogle, so let's hope it comes off.

Don't know why the red crosses after Matt Dean tweeted last night at 20 55 hrs. ......"#gtfc aim to conclude a deal with Scott Vernon tomorrow.

I understand the club and player are keen to get it done."

Fair enough to ask why it hasn't happened!

This looks to be a great signing, just the sort of player Bogle could thrive off... all Hursty needs to do now is pull out of the hat, a quick centre back to replace Toto, and an attacking central midfielder as good as Nolan, i don't expect miracles, but within the next week if possible

I have a friend who is a big Aberdeen fan, he says he is a very good player though not the quickest. He had a decent scoring record for them too, and that's only a couple of years ago.
Could be a great help in the development of Omar?
Hopefully a great signing

so......does this mean a change in the system we have been playing for the most of pre season??
or will Vernon play the role of single striker pushing Bogle out?

Difficult one. Some of the players we have signed look like 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 players so whether PH changes the system now is a big question. Ultimately, you've got to score goals to win games though so maybe he'll go back to 4-4-2

I'd have thought it would be the opposite, as a 433 is more suited to a counter attacking away game.

But 433 relies on more flare players and less work rate, were as 442 you can be much tighter and havw 2 men up front to hit on the break

Because you have the 2 midfielders who do the majority of the dirty work whilst the other centre midfielder and the other 3 attacking players are given much more license to roam and attack. 442 is much more structured.

Good. That gives some options now and some experience to get Bogle & Jackson into the game.

Has played quite a bit in the champ which is always a good sign. Also still 32 so has some mileage left in him depending on how well he has looked after himself

There are different ways of playing 4-3-3 and they need different players. You can still play with 2 central strikers plus one wide player. You can use one striker and 2 wingers or you can play it quite narrow with 3 strikers and let the full backs do the overlapping.

4-4-2 is much easier to play, much more structured and everyone knows what each position is about. Therefore normally less running in fact, except in central midfield when the opposition don't play fair and put 3 players in there.

Excellent signing. Even if he only scores 10 goals, his hold up, vision and ability in the air will bring bogle, jackson, tombola, vose, browne and chambers into goalscoring areas. Glad we got a guy with vast experience in too to help coach our young forwards

All the best to the player but I predicted the desperate signing of a journeyman on a two year contract would happen, hope the season ticket holders are pleased with our 30 goal only good enough for one year striker replacement. Just pleased I held back and didn't buy one, for my next prediction relagation battle! hope I'm wrong on this one.

Thank goodness its confirmed. I was starting to get worried. This is a highly recommended player with years of experience a lot at a higher level than L2 which means we know he can do a good job for us. The main piece of our jigsaw in my opinion. Its difficult to judge how good many of the newcomers will play but Scott has a CV which we can have faith in. PH obviously knows what he is getting as well. Now i think we will go OK this season. Maybe not promotion but if we get relegated with these players i think we will have been unlucky

Agree this is a good signing, a better player then John Lewis,

I can see us finish in the top 10 with this squad,

We only have to finish 7th to get into the play offs,

In the build up to the match they are still calling him as on trial.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Am sure you'd moan even if we signed iniesta and messi

Not sure why Shrewsbury didn't pick him very often (he only scored 3 goals in 2 years) but the hope is that he can provide for Jackson, Bogle and by no means least B from Sutton United

Shrewsbury did play him behind the front 2 at some point - at age 32 you need to use him as a 'pivot' for the others (Gary Birtles was particularly good at this - hope Scott is)?

Sounds like the midfield of Berrett and McAllister did well today - can see a bit of hope for the coming season

Not being funny but we have signed a proven football league striker on a two year deal , who would you seriously expect ?

Has not got ex fans slating him club to club and is a good name to have as a striker in league two imo ?

Another player to take pressure off Omar and let him play his natural game. I think back to the Lincoln game at Christmas where all the pre match talk was about podge, then bogle goes out and tears them a new one

First time I have seen him yesterday and thought he did real well just behind Jackson.
I would like to see those two starting next week.
Good signing IMO
UTM 👍

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Vernon reminds me a little of Gary Jones. Not that quick but link up play is good and decent in the air.He has a football brain.

His career record is not too dissimilar to Jones. Average a goal every 4 games or so over around 400 league appearances. Not prolific but like Jones it is his all round game that is his strength. Brings others into to play and creates openings for his strike partners. I think he can do for Bogle & Jackson what Jones did for Reddy & North.

He is different to what we already have. He seems comfortable playing with his back to goal. That isnt Bogle's natural game (nor Jackson I think.) Bogle's strength is getting the ball running on goal. But too often in the past we have not used Bogle to his best. It was the same for Hearn before him. Too many high balls played in to him facing the play when he would have been far more effective having balls played in front of him bearing down on goal. Vernon could be a good foil for him and indeed Jackson.

As has been pointed out Vernon has spent most of his career at a higher level than League 2. Obviously didnt have the best of times in his stint at Shrewsbury (only scored 2 goals). But if you look at his career for dozen years before that he has it in him to get double figures in goals.

Overall a decent pick up but as i has said before doesnt answer all our needs and we need another forward with a proven record of scoring goals at this level.

At this late stage I wonder if there is still such a player out there. Another like Vernon is what we need in case he gets injured,
