Absolutely stunned at the relative ease in which we appear to have signed numerous players of high quality.

Very impressed.

Credit has to go to Hurst for that.

Last manager we had who managed to attract players from all over the country was Russell Slade when he brought in players like Michael Reddy and Gary Jones here, despite no previous links with the area.

It's a rarity that our location has gone in our favour, in the cases of McAllister and Davies but the likes of Browne and (hopefully) Bolarinwa it can't have been an easy sell.  Even for players who are semi-professional, stepping up to League Two isn't always financially beneficial - leaving the bright city lights of London will make it even more an obstacle.

Being a professional football player is a very privileged job always as been. Even here it is not easy to get a contract and some players just never really get the chance. Sometimes you see young kids with bags of talent but they fail to make the extra step up others start slow and become a really good player but for these lads if must feel great to play to a decent crowd especially away from home.

On the plus side it is somewhat cheaper to live in GY than it is in Sutton or London with average house prices between £400k - £700k. I saw one go up for sale last week in a excrement part of Hackney for £1.2m. last week and it wasn't even a nice Victorian house.

Cleethorpes is a nice seaside resort,

Any player with a young family would not have to try very hard to convince their children to live here,

Plus there are some lovely villages around Grimsby,

We should do a video of all the nice area's of Grimsby and surrounding area's and show it to any player who have doubts of moving to the area.

I live in a lovely area of Suffolk but would move back to the Grimsby area in a heartbeat,

Just need a 3 year contract offer from the club first.

I never have believed that theory about nobody wanting to come. It is all about money and the status and ambition of the club concerned.

We are wealthier than last year and we are in the league. That's a big plus for potential signings. For good non-league players we represent now a genuine step up not just a possible one. For League players we are on a par with most clubs in L2 for budget but bigger than most in terms of fan base and reputation. We look like a club on the move.

Financially and football wise, times have changed from our last few league close seasons.

Hurst is doing well with his signings and he too must be relieved he's doing it in relatively comfortable circumstances compared to last year as well.

Stable management team also a big plus too IMO.

I wouldn't change jobs to move to a firm where there's a trigger happy CEO and regular vacancies...

Not sure how true but have seen on Twitter that Tom Bolarinwa and Moses Odubajo are brothers.

Location may have helped again

Spot on mate. Ive lived in London for a good few years now and you have to factor in the cost of living on top of the wages down here. Id rather live in GY any day of the week. If players are in a renting situation down here its a no brainer.

That's true, but in the age of one-year contracts the cost of living argument has almost become redundant.  I completely understand the logic in one-year deals and the caution when dishing out three-year deals, especially to lads who will be stepping up a few levels, but it's pleasing to see we're able to offer longer security as incentives.

Our history must help amongst other things eg when you come to Blundell park it feels like a proper lower league club and not tin pot .

The club should talk to Gary Croft about helping the new players with advice and show them around the area and point out the best locations to settle in the area, being a ex-pro footballer and now a estate agent he will know what is what.

Sort of to do with the thread subject but non-footy.

It made me smile to see the temporary road sign on the Laceby By-Pass near Morrisons last week.

It big letters it claimed

MAJOR EVENT IN GRIMSBY AND CLEETHORPES, JUNE 24TH -26TH. DELAYS LIKELY. SEVERAL ROAD CLOSURES.

and then it changed to a 2nd page which read in massive letters.

THROUGH TRAFFIC AVOID AREA

Hmm, not sure what sort of through traffic we have in the Grimsby area really.

It's not so much the area but how far we are from a city.

Clubs within an 1 or 2 from London have the advantage of a massive catchment area. Ditto the North West. Our nearest major city is Hull but then Sheffield and if your in Sheffield your still closer to the teams on the M1 corridor.

If a lower league talent dosnt have to move home to join a club then they are likely not to.

Sheffield, Barnsley, Leeds, Rotherham, Scunthorpe, Hull,  - all higher than us in League placings at present, and all easily commutable even if we have bad weather conditions, all along good A class roads or motorways , so we also have a good catchment area, really.

Our house prices and family amenities could surprise many players who are married with families, and who wouldn't want to pass the night away in our cheery night clubs if single ??

If only Hurst would buy a large bus to bring "us" signings in each day to Cheapside??

Think of our carbon footprint reduction !

Gary Croft needs to sell houses as well !!!

Very good point. If the manager sells it to you, and you get on with him - and you know that he won't get sacked in November - then that's a nice foundation on which to make a commitment (for one, two or even three years).

One big difference is we're now recruiting players from lots of different leagues. During the dark days of Buckley 3, N*well and Woods I don't remember us ever signing any up and coming players from non-league. That policy looks ridiculous now.

Signing from lower leagues is a risky business. Its fine when you pick up a Vardy but more often than not they cant play at the level they have been elevated to. Im hoping that the manager's judgement is justified in those signings. At least some of the signings have proved themselves at this level.

Hursty has a good eye for talent,

I trust him to find at least one gem that will go on and play at a higher level,

I hope its with us.

Yeah Peterborough and Scunny have done terribly over the last decade after getting players in from lower leagues.

I don't know about the theory but I do recall AB saying that it was a challenge getting players to come to the area. Admittedly this was when we were at Championship level and that could have been for players of that quality.

I have always maintained this supposed difficulty in getting people to this area is a complete misnomer.

If the club is on the up, and the terms offered are acceptable to the player, then of course they will come. I hope I am not talking too soon, but from the signings we have made it looks at long last that the penny has dropped with those in charge at BP. Trying to get 2 players for the price of one just doesn't work. At long last they seem to see players as an investment and that is good news all round.

Is this problem actually "solved" or is it that the club has changed policy and now allows players to commute?  I know in th passed we have said they must live in the area but this isn't the case now...or wasn't
