Try A46 to Lincoln, through Lincoln then  A16 Sleaford. Turn right a few miles before Sleaford through Cranwell village and RAF Cranwell. At A17 just after RAF Cranwell turn right and immediately left at Byard's Leap.   Go straight on for miles through Ancaster taking signs for Colsterworth. At Colsterworth you reach the A1. It's a good straight road(the Roman Ermine Street) and definitely better than going down from Grimsby as far as Boston.  


I used to live a few miles away from their place and every time I went up and down the country, the Ancaster route is what I always took....never any problems with congestion.

I used to go from Lincoln towards Grantham though rather than via Sleaford, getting off at Navenby, so you miss any congestion in towns

A couple of hours run at most from GY
