For those of you that do go to watch Grimsby town fc can I ask why? I will start you off. 1. I cannot support my team by staying at home. 2. I realise my team needs my support now more than ever. 3. I will do all that I can to help my team to succeed.

I don't meet any of those criteria, so I am no longer a supporter.
The main reason I don't go is because I don't enjoy it much and after about 20 mins, I'm bored and wishing I was doing something else.
Its a young man's game nowadays this supporting lark.
If it was free to go, a bit warmer and I wasn't surrounded by thick, smelly fookas, I'd probably watch them a few times a season.
I still like to remember the great times I've had over the years watching town and they'll always have a place in my heart if Mr Scott will allow me to.

so, because i live over 300 miles away, that makes me less of a supporter than you????

its got sodomist all to do with that.

1. yes, i can support my team by staying at home. i can also support them by buying their products and seeing them whenever viable
2. so your saying that if town were top of the prem, just won the chumpions league and had 10 england international players, i should support them less as they dont need it
3. i will always do whatever i can to see town succeed. whether that be buying their produce, watching away games, working for the club (as i used to), attending home matches, i will always do my upmost to be a proud town fan.

The word supporter is totally subjective. Only you can decide whether you are one or not. There's nothing that you have to do to be one. Lots of people arrive at work on Monday morning to celebrate "their" team winning when they have never even been to the city where they play. Most of them would probably call themselves the supporters. Likewise the dross of society, British people that walk around with Barcelona or Real Madrid shirts on (have they no shame?).

ROB, BUT WHAT IF THESE PEOPLE THAT WEAR THE SHIRTS ARE GENUINE SUPPORTERS?
JUST LIKE THE SUPPORTERS OF  CLUBS IN THIS COUNTRY MAY MAKE THE TREK TO SEE THEIR TEAM WHENEVER POSSIBLE, SO MIGHT THEY.

I AM PROUD TO BE A GRIMSBY TOWN SUPPORTER. I AM PROUD OF MY HERITAGE AND I HAVE SPENT MY (HARD?) EARNED MONEY DOING SO.
JUST BECAUSE CIRCUMSTANCE'S DONT ALLOW ME TO GO AS OFTEN AS OTHERS, MAKES ME NO LESS OF A TRUE SUPPORTER.
ASK SOMEONE THAT KNOWS ME!
I WORK WITH A BLOKE FROM LINCOLN, AND THE FIRST THING WE DO ON A MONDAY (OR MIDWEEK) IS DISCUSS OUR TEAMS FORTUNES.

I have a few Barca shirts and have taken an interest in the club since the Lineker and Hughes days, nice to know that puts me in the dross of society compound.

Like you say, the word supporter is totally subjective.

As I said "supporter" is a term of self-diagnosis. Someone who supports Man Utd, lives inside the M25 and has never been to Manchester is a supporter if they choose to call themselves one. They may even have rituals like those who go to games. Perhaps they have a lucky armchair, or a brand of beer that makes their team do well?

HANG ON. AM NOT USING IT AS AN EXCUSE. IF I HAD A SPARE £400 A MONTH TO SPEND ON TRAVELLING EVERY WEEKEND, I WOULD.

LIKEWISE, I COULD SAY, ARE THE 2500 WHO DIDNT TURN UP TO FOREST GREEN LAST SEASON ON A THURSDAY NIGHT NOT SUPPORTERS???????

AND WHAT THE HELL HAVE FOOTBALL SHIRTS GOT TO DO WITH IT!!!!
JUST BECAUSE I WOULD WEAR A LYLE AND SCOTT POLO SHIRT, DOESNT MEAN I SUPPORT EITHER LYLE OR SCPTT (AND NO THIS ISNT DIRECTED TOWARDS HURST/SCOTT)

A "SUPPORTER" goes to as many games a possible.

A "FOLLOWER" does not got to all the games, does not support to their full capacity.

It is a silly argument really as there are alot of different factors in why people will stop going to watch Town that some people don't take into consideration as see it as like a competition to say "Im a proper supporter your not" and rubbish like that.

  • Moving out of the area
  • Having children
  • Growing out of it
  • Not enjoying it any more
  • Not being financially viable

These are all contributing factors.

I for one will say I am just a follower, BSP just does not give me the excitement as it did when we were a league club, its simple as that.

I go to watch town probably twice a month, I also go to watch Chelsea home and away in England and in Europe, I am not really bothered if I get called a follower or a glory supporter or whatever, as long as I enjoy it I couldn't really give a rats behind.

I AGREE BRIGG. WELL, WITH MOST OF IT.

I ACTUALLY ENJOY THE BSP. ITS LIKE PROPER BACK TO BASICS. THE GROUNDS ARE WONDERFUL AND THE FANS ARE TOO. HAVENT SEEN ANY TROUBLE AT ANY GAME, AND THE FACT THAT THERE ARE QUITE A FEW LOCAL-ISH GAME FOR ME IS SUPERB.
I USE TAMWORTH LAST SEASON AS AN EXAMPLE. OK, WE LOST 2-1, BUT HAD SUCH A LAUGH IN THE AWAY END.
AND GOING INTO THE SUPPORTERS CLUBS AT FOREST GREEN AND BATH CITY WAS EXCELLENT. NO HOSTILITIES AT ALL. OK, IT MAY BE DIFFERENT FOR LINCOLN,MANSFIELD AND MAYBE LUTON, BUT THEY ARE THE EXCEPTION.

WE EVEN GOT WELCOMED INTO A CRICKET CLUB AT THE NEWPORT GAME!!!
