In addition to carrying out instructions on the field and communications with other players, the captain is the official link between the players and the referee during the game.

That is true from a few years ago, but nowadays even at town every player has a go at the ref, surrounds them and complains at decisions.  Didnt Brian Clough used to fine any player barring his captain that spoke out of turn to an official.
