I'd like to but I have never seen the slightest bit of evidence that God exists

Ask any man what nationality he would prefer to be, and ninety nine out of a hundred will tell you that they would prefer to be Englishmen.

What annoys me when a real bad accident happens is when one person says God was looking after me and saved me,

Why did he not save everybody, ?

Religious people that I know are not very caring,

I have christian beliefs in the way I live my life,

BUT

There is no evidence for the exsistence of GOD , saying you have to have faith is not evidence.

Despite my username it's a load of tosh. I can't believe people in the 21st century believe in something as ridiculous as a God. Absolutely astounds me.

Millions have been killed in wars,

Millions have been killed in accidents,

Millions have died of illness,

Millions have been injured or deformed,

Millions of children have died of starvation,

Most elderly people suffer years of pain,

AND so on and so on , all over the world,

BUT

If there was a god he could do something to stop it,

BUT decides not to,

So if he does excist why do nothing ?

Yet one good thing happens and its gods doing,

So come on you who believe tell us why ?

To be honest, I believe there MAY be a God. But I think I believe this more as a comfort mechanism more than because there is any actual proof.

Spot on, of course it is.

It's also a way of controlling the masses.

Fear is a very powerful weapon. To control the population, what better way than to convince them an all knowing, all seeing entity will cast them into the fires of Hades for all time when they die if they don't follow a set of rules mysteriously written by an unseen hand and brought down a hill by a bloke with a beard...

And this is in no way just a Christian rant. Christianity is no worse or better than any religion, but the belief that some Jewish zombie can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and drink his blood and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because some rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat an apple from a magical tree.... Makes perfect sense really, when you think about it...

Sheesh..

As a dyslexic, I often lay awake at night wondering if there really is a dog

I'll get my coat

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

If you're referring to the Christian God or any of the other man-made Gods, then no. Whether there is some all-powerful force (not a man sat on a cloud type) I don't think it's within human comprehension to understand it.

Sometimes I do get a bit spiritual though, I love the changing of the seasons and the beauty that it produces (all borne out of scientifically measurable forces), so you could say mother nature is my goddess.

surely god is whatever or whoever you want it to be...some people seek salvation etc in supporting a 'god' which is associated with christianity etc...some people seek salvation in othe rplaces be it football/music or simply just basque in the glory of planet earth itself...its all personal preference however, until someone can prove to me that what is in the bible is true or can actually put forward a logical argument to me that jesus wasn't just a fictitious character and that he did actually cure a lepper or did actually get strung up on a cross then i shall remain somewhat as an atheist

If there is a god and he made the world ( universe ) in 7 days,

Why did he make it so BIG ?

Personally I see the Bible as a book or morals and teachings on how to live life.

God is merely a metaphor for the forces that could not be explained when the Bible was written.

Nothing wrong with Christian values though, the ten commandments were clearly a ploy by the local council to scrub up the streets from 24 hour drinking, hoodies and the inevitable rise of carrying a weapon. Plus the divorces were state funded and were becoming a real drain on the xmas do champagne fund. So, 'God' said "Thou should not bang anyone other than one you're hitched to."

I've got a book called the Street Bible that I use in school (I teach in a CofE school) as it puts the bible into a more accessible language. By simplifying the language the children get the actual message. As a result they can create comic strips, drama, recounts etc. of their own and put the christian message within the story.

Jesus of Nazareth existed. Of that there is proof. Whether or not he was the son of God and could cure people is purely up to you.

and whilst on the subject of ricky gervais, that poor snake, having to crawl around for the remainder of his days...

Years ago I worked for the Lincoln Diocese Board,

No I was not a vicar !

My job was to find work for the unemployed,

During the 4 years I worked for them I met lots and lots of vicars,

Christ ! what a lot,

Talk about looking after yourself,

BUT

I did not believe in god before then and I am sure that some of those vicars did not either.

the correct GTFC answer to this Q is; 'yes, i did believe in God, but he proper ruined my view of him in his third spell here, and i won't even mention the son of god....'

Aye - smiting those who don't agree with you, torturing people and their families to 'prove' their faith etc etc are all jolly good moral lessons to teach the young and impressionable

9 posters have said yes they believe in god,

I have no problem with people finding comfort in having an almighty being looking after them,

BUT

How many of those 9 believe in Father Christmas ?

The tooth fairy ?

Elves and Goblins ?

There are hundreds of different religions so how many gods are there ? and do they get on with each other.

100% certainty YES!
But God is just a word and has too many negative conotations for too many people. (Mostly Religion's fault!)
I have little truck with religion, it's just a pointer to the Truth. As is Newtonian physics (It's only matter that matters. PAH!) manly a pointer against the Truth.
"God" is the infinite creative intelligence behind every single thing in the universe.
As Quantum physics (infinite possibilities) will assist in eventually proving, there is no "God" out there who is going to save you. YOU (and everything else) is part of what makes "God," and therfore it's all down to YOU!

Looking at the theory that everything started with the BIG BANG,

If there was no space, no time, no matter or anti matter,

What the hell went BANG ?

Random particles of matter that apparently just "appeared" from the nothingness... And when 2 appeared at the same instant, at the same point, ka-boom.. Apparently.
Difficult to comprehend...

From stars that had previously existed but had come to the end of their life. But that doesn't explain how the very first star came into existence.

Son says to his dad, " who is god ?"

Dad replies, " he's the bloke who ignores you when you ask for help "
