Following on from the footy thread,

We did not have mobile phones - computers - play stations or much else,

We went to school either by foot or bike,

So no school runs as not many parents had cars in those days,

After school we had tea and went out to play footy in the winter and cricket in the summer,

When it got dark we went home,

TV was the BBC,

One channel only and that did not start until about 5.00 pm

It closed down at 10.30- 11.00pm

Foreign holidays was for only the rich,

So Cleethorpes was packed in the summer months with yorkies,

People from Sheffield and Leeds would spend a week or two every year at their favourite holiday resort  CLEETHORPES!!!!!

School was easy going but very strict,

What I mean is, we did not take exams after the 11+ unless you went to grammer school.

BUT

Teachers and the head like to swing the cane in your direction at every possible opportunity,

Work was mostly manual in those times so Fishing made Grimsby Great also mining in Yorkshire was the main profession,

So 2 weeks at the seaside was heaven after spending the rest of the year down pit.

AND

Two weeks was the holiday entitlement then not 4 or 5 weeks,

People went to work on the bus or their bike,

Also went to the match on their bikes and payed 2d ( 1 p ) to leave their bikes in the front gardens in Imperial Ave and Constitutional Ave,

You could have a really good night out for less than a pound, 6 pints+ fish + chips and still have plenty of change.

Was those days better than today  ???

I do not know,

BUT

I am glad I was born when I was , just after the war and not today.

And how many of us went out and smashed things up, or terrorised old folk, because, "we had nothing to do, and nowhere to go?"

And in our house the remote control was the youngest sibling.  (ME   )

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

Still had a black+white telly in 1966,

So I am waiting to see England win the world cup in colour.

And of course those were the days when to go to university REALLY meant something. As opposed to today when someone does 'BA Media Studies & Forensic Science' at the University of Clugthorpe (formerly the Clugthorpe School of Hairdressing).

So education was better then too.

Mr McGee, don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.
