This is no great surprise. During the Second World War thousands of locals would switch torches on at night and shine them into the sky to look for Luftwaffe bombers.

To this day Hully-Gullies still wonder why Hull was one of the most bombed cities of the war.

Equally, how many towns/cities do you know colloqually named after a river?

Is Newcastle-upon-Tyne known as Tyne? Kingston-upon-Thames known as Thames? No.

The last time I was in Hull, me and a couple of mates went into a greasy spoon for breakfast. The waitress plonked them in front of us with the line 'There's your breakfastses'.

the fact that east riding, particularly hull has a very poor literacy rate...

after all, they do call it a fern and go down essle rurd

The best was when i was a Pub Quiz in Hull and one of the questions was "What film does Arnie go to Mars in?" Some fat lass shouts "Turtle Recorrl"

Talking from experience, I used to cringe when working in Hull Primary Schools. It wasn't the teachers, I hasten to add, who did a remarkable job considering what they were up against.
