Anyone got somebody in the family getting uni results today?
G/F's daughter has just got a 2:1 degree in audiology.
She is now a Bsc with honours.First person in their family to go to uni.Girlfriend is grinning like a Cheshire cat.
Number two daughter is off to Sunderland to study law in September,so am going to try and organise visiting when Town are away and Sunderland at home.

I'm waiting on my first year results, then in Spetember I start my second year. I'm hoping I will get an average of 55 - 60% (2:1?) for the first year which needs to be duplicated in the second year so I am eligible to apply for the 1 year Bsc top-up after. Luckily the Uni course I am doing was available at The Grimsby Institute, so I can still be a season ticket holder

I don't see how it really is a problem that I've been at Uni for 1 year and don't fully understand the percentage to classification conversion. At Grimsby College they give you it in a percentage, but do tell us at the beginning of the year how the percentages are classified but I didn't write them down. Maybe I should, but what's the point when the results are given as a percentage. If I was really, really conscious about my first year results I would have checked up the classifications, however, I know that I am looking at around 55-60% average which is good enough to progress onto year 2. Maybe in year 2 I will be bothered about the classifications, but at the moment it doesn't really bother me if I know or not. Knowing the percentage is good enough, for now.

G/F's daughter got a 61% average which gave her a 2:1 if that helps. Well done to Chrisblor too.

60-69 is normally a 2.1. 70 and above is a 1st.
Universities actually have a number of ways to calculate the final classification.
Some add up all 12 modules (over the 2nd and 3rd year as 1st year doesn't count) and divide by 12.
Others take the best 6 and average the rest. to achieve a 2.1 you need 6 modules at 2.1 and above and the rest averaging 55 and above.
It is worth knowing how it works so you can play the system, meaning that you know exactly what you need to work at.
The best advice I can give is enjoy your first year and work hard during your second. Do well in your second year and you'll find that you need a lower average in the harder, but not weighted, third year. With a dissertation in the third and generally bigger projects that have combined modules there is the chance that if you fuck up then it's going to hit you big time.

Thanks for the advice. I'm sure it will come in handy. Like you stated, I enjoyed my first year not worrying about results, as effectively they don't have much of a bearing on the final outcome in the second year. Additionally the first year was basically a top-up of the two previous years on a college course. I'm now enjoying my break from the studying, but eagerly await year 2 as it brings knowledge of areas that I have yet to explore in I.T

I'd watch out in the final year. Mine was weighted at 60% of total marks, for the final harder year. Which is fair enough. If they're evenly weighted, you're very, very lucky.

| The wife was going away for a girly weekend. I jokingly remarked 'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football' 'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked She said 'Well you already know how to play football' |

Well done steve. Hate to burst the bubble but you're not qualified until you pass your NQT year.
Seems strange i know when your certificate from the GTC says Qualified Teacher Status on it!

Photographer or what I originally wanted to do; paramedic. (that changed when i ended up in the back of an ambulance though.
I do love teaching. When i'm allowed to actually do just that. Instead you end up caught up in so many other things that eat away at your time. Teaching feels like the smallest wedge in my responsibillities at the moment.
I've been sat at this laptop since 7am doing school work. Non of which will actually benefit the children in my class. It is merely to satisfy senior management. I don't mind working I'd just rather it was to better the children funnily enough!
Same as any job I suppose.

Yeah that's what's drawing me back from going into teaching- the bureaucracy and not being able to get on with that which benefits the children. Think it's about time the govt employed more assistants that could do most of the ground work.
