Swapping Craig Clay for James Berrett was the single biggest aberration of Hurst’s two reigns here. Well that, and signing Anthony Straker.

Strange little phase Hursty went through that, signing 2010-16 edition York City players like he was collecting Pokémon. Thankfully it’s the other way round now.

Hopefully he doesn't start collecting relegated Hartlepool players like Pokémon this summer.

I’d happily take Umerah and Kemp in fairness, though Kemp technically isn’t their player.

The York thing is seriously strange though. I hadn’t fully appreciated it at the time, but the sheer number of players he signed between January 2013 and July 2016 who had recently been at York is quite staggering. Here’s the full list (in no particular order):

Michael Rankine
Richard Brodie
Danny Parslow
Ashley Chambers
Scott Kerr
Jamal Fyfield
Scott Brown
Chris Doig
Paddy McGlaughlin
Luke Summerfield
Anthony Straker
James Berrett

That’s 12 in the space of 3 and a half years, assuming I haven’t missed anyone off. Too big an anomaly to be pure coincidence, surely. Something agent-based perhaps? Weird either way.

It’s players recently managed by his mate Darrell Clarke now isn’t it?

Adam Crookes
Danny Amos
Scott Burgess
George Lloyd

I have it on good authority Hurst signed Brendon Kiernan after he misread when he signed for Walsall and thought he was a DC signing. (I might have made that up)

Port Vale have rather selfishly disrupted that by sacking DC though so that well will run dry.
