Wearne has left and moved to Gateshead.

https://gtfc.co.uk/wearne-departs-for-gateshead/

I do wonder if this is the start of next season's planning by Hurst.

Good luck to the lad, never really got running here. Think we will keep a core of the squad for next year but add some starters.

It's a lottery with us and wingers isn't it?

It will have to be a big step up in quality when we next sign one and for God's sake make sure their number one quality is tracking back otherwise we are wasting everybody's time.

Watched Wearne a few times, including preseason and was never convinced he was ready for league 2.
Only 21 with a decent pedigree coming through the Sunderland academy but think we were a step too far, personally think dropping back into the NL will be a good step in his career, good luck to the lad..

It’s clear that the current squad isn’t good enough to challenge at the top end, so those players who rarely challenge the first team need to be moved on, and some of the existing first 11-14 need to become the squad players as we upgrade the first 11.

Think he was more game ready than some of the loanees we have had/have so unfortunate for me.
Seemed to hit some sort of form and presumably fitness during his loan , came back, left to rot again.

Shame for him, didn't seem to be a waster to me or lazy so best of luck to him as he clearly wants to play football rather than languish.

I have a feeling we are going to upgrade the squad significantly in the summer.

Last summer was difficult both because of the late finish to our season, and because we might well have been viewed as something of a yo yo club having been in the EFL just 5 years before dropping back to the NL.

Now, thanks to the cup exploits,  I think players will have a different perception of our prospects, especially if we have a good end of season and get into the top ten.

I love the way some of the experts on here judge him based upon a few cameos and the extensive experience they have in professional football.

Young lad still in his development In reality, personally I wish him well.

This
Good luck to the lad.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

I think we will see a few departures over the summer, but I would love it we could sign Smith, and Lloyd for starters.  Emmanuel too, though I think I am dreaming there......

Emmanuel would be a great signing but I think we can all agree that it won't be happening. I would like to see us push the boat out for Smith and Lloyd though, and I think both are realistic permanent targets.

With this recent switch to 3/5 at the back, our summer transfer business will be interesting.

We paid a fee for emmanuel didn't we? Surely there's an extension clause in there somewhere?

Absolutely.

We didn't give him a fair chance to show us what he can do imo. A young lad needs a run of at least half-a-dozen games just
to feel part of the setup.

Hurst obviously didn't feel he could risk that, and managers are there to make such judgements.
I am not foolish enough to question El General's opinion.

We signed him as a promising youngster rather than the finished article, so when we adopted a formation with wing-backs
he was pretty much frozen out of consideration.

Hope he blossoms at Gateshead.

He looked ok when he did come on and fair play to thr lad for coming back and trying to force his way in. Hurst obviously wasn’t seeing enough in training either.

Good move for him though and I’m sure he’ll have some sort of career at that level…

Think gateshead have made an almost Paul hurst type signing, comes out of nowhere, a bit like when he produced Emmanuel out of nowhere.
Am sure he will be a good signing for gateshead, hes proven at that level, and will no doubt be happier back home.

Smith is contracted to play for Hull for another year after this season. So he'd be on championship fringe wages wouldn't he? which would be beyond us I'm guessing unless hull are willing to make up the difference in order to save themselves some money - meaning they'd have to be convinced he was not going to be of any use to them. Would he be a useful, relatively cheap fringe championship player next season? Or maybe they see him as being loaned to league 1 next year for the season, see how he does and anotherbpossible deal with them after that as a championship squad player and developing from there.

It'd be difficult to prise him away invthe summer I'd have thought, I hope I'm wrong though as I like him.

Not sure we will be switching to 3 at the back anyway, we've 2 really good attacking wingbacks in glennon and emmanuel and we've still lacked width when on top sometimes in my opinion. Hurst has said as a rule he isn't keen on that formation, although maybe he is moving away from being happy with 2 in CM these days.

Lloyd I like and Hurst obviously does, depends if the transfer fee is reasonable tho, maybe we would be better off investing that in an out of contract forward with more goal scoring pedigree where our money can then compete with his wage offers. Maybe after the cup run we will be able to do both!

He was in a difficult position with many in front of him in the pecking order and when Hurst has made his mind up it seems difficult to change it no matter what you do. Seems another case of a player who wants to play and doesn't care where that happens. He's a young lad and at this point in his career he wants to be playing as many games as possible and gaining that experience. He'd never get the chance here.

It's a good move for him. He can re-set his career at a level that suits him and help his development as a player as well.
