Cup Run

Given that we are now at the same stage Lincoln got to, albeit with much less publicity, what are the earnings we have got so far in the cup and what are we likely to end up with?

Lincoln’s run set them for their eventual place in league 1 where they have cemented a mid table place quite comfortably - this would be my aim.

Lincoln were live on national TV at the 3rd round stage replay I think, against Ipswich, I assume that would have earned them more than we got by the same stage.

Not sure about their other games apart from against Arsenal in the QF for which a sell out would have held double Brightons ground so more money there.

Definitely similarities between our runs, suppose the only difference is we were in NL. Like you we won away at a premiership club who made 6 changes in the 5th round (Burnley), and we actually knocked Brighton out who again made changes.. in the 4th round. That all changed away at Arsenal in the quarters as Wegner played his 1st 11, and we couldn't get a touch really, it was utter 1 way traffic, though I would imagine you have a stronger side than we had then being a division higher.

Money wise, we made our biggest amount, away at Arsenal, gate receipts were huge I think for us and TV too.

Did the club ever reveal how much the cup run generated.  Am guessing over a million? How was the money spent? Did it go on transfer fees or big wages?

If you can be bothered to watch the first 20 seconds of this video, they bought their new training ground with it. Wages etc are being funded through other means, I imagine.

The EFL fund doesn't exist any more Kristine Green confirmed that. You have missed off the overseas TV fee for the Burton game though, 40k I think?

I think the gate receipts would be  a bit less (17k of the cup run gate was 15 quid for adults and a fiver for kids from the game at southampton) and 20k has to be paid for VAR for the two games with it (southampton and Brighton).

I would think more like 1.3 million assuming your other figures are right but sales of merchandise like Harry haddock would add a bit to that. A huge amount for us.

Last week in the media Jason Stockwood said the profit from the cup run will go into the playing budget. So they’ll be some costs and a well earned bonus for the players but overall I’d expect us to have the highest budget we’ve seen in donkeys to go at next season.

Southampton were 64 places above us. We were actually top of League Two when we beat Spurs (who were 8th in the PL at the time), so that’s 60 places. Brighton are also 8th (though they could drop a place later tonight) so with us currently 17th that’s a whopping 77 position gap.

I’m fairly sure Southampton is the greatest deficit we’ve overcome in my lifetime, with Town being in the second tier when we beat the likes of West Ham and Liverpool, and third tier when we beat Villa, Wednesday and Leicester in the 90s.

Those are all the top-flight giant killings I can think of in my time following Town (though I may have missed a couple). Would an improbable win at Brighton genuinely be our greatest cup win in our 145 year history (and was Southampton the greatest so far)?

To answer your last question, it wouldn’t just be our greatest cup win, it’d go down as one of the biggest in the cups history. I’m struggling to think of anything bigger than a League 2 club going to the semis, Wigan or Wimbledon winning the thing? But even then, they were top flight sides.

FWIW Southampton is the best in our history IMO, mainly for the reward of a quarter final (still can’t believe it).

Wycombe beat Premier League Leicester to make the semis in 2001, thanks to that fabled Roy Essandoh goal, though they were a third tier side. Lincoln of course reached the quarters in 2017 as a non-league side, which was equally if not more impressive I would say, begrudgingly.

So maybe you’re right, a League Two side in the semis would just be incredible, wouldn’t it. It remains so, so unlikely but isn’t it just mental that two years ago today we lost 2-1 at home to Forest Green to find ourselves 5 points adrift at the bottom of the EFL after a run of 3 straight defeats, and now we are one win away from being that club.

It’s almost incomprehensible to me.

Middlesborough must be very close in 88/89, IIRC they were 10th in the top flight and we were 4th bottom of the 4th Division at the time we played them.

That win would have got far more national coverage had then non-league Sutton, not beaten then top-flight Coventry City.

Good shout. Boro were 13th in the top flight while we were 20th in division 4. By my maths that’s 74 places apart, so more than Southampton but not quite as big a gap as Brighton will likely be.

I have to admit, being only 3 years old at the time of the Middlesbrough game, it’s a result that I knew of and I have seen the late Marc North goals countless times, but I hadn’t appreciated quite how far apart the two sides were until now. Quite the result, that.

Didn’t we knock Villa out on away goals after two draws? I think the 3-1 might have been against Coventry, and we got knocked out anyway as Kevin Drinkell did us in the 2nd leg.

I had the misfortune of living in Middlesbrough for three years in my late teens / early twenties. The spot where Ayresome Park was is now a small housing estate, with street names attempting to honour what went before but clearly the lazy work of a housing developer’s marketing team (“The Turnstile”, “The Midfield”, rather than anything unique to the club).

The surrounding area is rough as fúck though, much of what I remember is now razed to the ground, and I’ve often wondered what it must have been like as an away day. I can only imagine it was edgy.

Very. I remember a police line had to be formed after that result to protect the coaches we were on!

Thought the police did a great job that day (as far as I remember it was a female police officer in charge and she wasn’t taking any prisoners from their fans). Was interesting having to break off the group to get back to my car.

With regards the gap in places a Cod Almighty article put the gap at 76 places.

This was also a ground we went to on Friday night a few years earlier and beat them 5 - 0 so happy memories

I was going to say the same , Boro was actually in the top 5 at one point when we drew them .
Also Coventry at home the next season we beat 3-1 but they beat us 3-0 in the replay

Boro ended up getting relegated that season in the end though didn't they? That might well happen to Southampton too. Can't see that being the case with Brighton!

I remember being hemmed in by the police afterwards and then they said coaches this way, trains that way. We were in the car and left to find our way on our own. Half way there a mob of about 30 boro appeared out of a passageway. One of those oh intercourse moments. The manager of our sunday league team was the biggest of us, and he kind of fronted us up, luckily we walked straight through them all without anything happening. Then when we got to my car, there were a few of their lads stood around it. The car had a sticker from the garage it was bought from which was somewhere in Saltburn, which I knew wasn't that far from boro, so I put on a excrement geordie accent and said scuse me mate to get in that car. We were just getting in car when my mate said (in a plain grimsby accent) can you open the boot, so i can put my coat in. I knew he had a town top on underneath, and I think I was close to crying when I said  - just get in the fookin car steve. As I pulled away we got a couple of boots on the car from then, but somehow got awa`y unscathed.

yeah, everyone completely ignoring we just reported a £1m loss

Boro away we let the train take the strain and after the game the 80-100 of us faced a real Custers last stand moment whilst being escorted to the station. They were in front and behind in huge numbers and when we got to a set of traffic lights they pounced from both sides as well.Probably a dozen or so Police kept them at bay on one side and the town fans policed the other side quite a few head injuries from half bricks but miraculously nobody seriously hurt . That was a bad day off the pitch but not at all uncommon 80s and early 90s but Boro on a par with Stoke for trouble.

Poojah,  there is also the accumulative difference in league places over 6 rounds.  A very big total.  

…..sorry, over 6 matches against higher-placed teams.

Yep, I can’t be arsed to do the maths but with Southampton 64 places above and Luton similar, we must be north of 150 places when you add Burton, Cambridge and Plymouth in the mix.

You’d imagine that is some sort of record, but I’m not sure how you’d go about establishing such a stay.

Does anybody remember the 1965 2-2 league cup draw with West Ham who, pre-World Cup ,had Moore, Hurst, and Peters in their team. And we only lost the replay 1-0.
