With the sad passing of Motty today it got me thinking of FA Cup  Finals from years ago. What was your favourite and why?
I enjoyed most from the 80s but the Man City v Spurs replay and that Ricky Villa goal wins it. Also on that particular night the fair was in Town so I'd won a goldfish and watched the fame chomping a toffee apple.

The FA Cup Final was, in my younger days and along with Christmas Day, the biggest family event of the year with curtains closed and us all sat around the black and white tv. For many of us it often determined which of the “big clubs” you were going to follow hence Spurs became my team when they beat Burnley in 1962. I was fortunate to attend the aforementioned finals in 1981 and 1987 with obvious mixed emotions but both were cracking matches.

Going back to the 60’s I recall the 3-2 West Ham victory over Preston in 1964 and the fabulous Everton come back in 1966 when they came back from 2-0 down to beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-2 with the surprisingly selected Mike Trebilcock scoring 2 of the goals and Derek Temple the winner.

Always a great day and a shame it’s lost so much of its glamour and to be honest now I can’t remember who won it 2 years ago and if I have something else on don’t always watch the final.

Grahams Rodgers isn’t it. Rick Stein’s doppelgänger. On at half-time. Didn’t give Clive Allen a sniff. Marvellous.

That one immediately sprang to mind.

Also Jim Montgomery and the double save with Bob Stokoe in a mac doing a David Pleat before David Pleat.

The 1966 Everton comeback.  As a kid then cup finals always seemed more special.

I think that there was an even more special later the same year.

Sunderland beating the mighty Leeds in a massive shock.  Jim Montgomery playing out of skin in goal.

Not the best final but 17 May 2014

Arsenal 3–2 Hull City after extra time

Hull 2-0 up after 9 minutes

Thankfully Arsenal turned it around, we would never have heard the last of it if Hull had won.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

(Dirty) Leeds v Chelsea (Hairdressers) in 70, the first I can remember and the first time I’d seen a colour TV - it was about the size of half a telephone box…along with the replay an all time classic clash of styles, save that Chelsea did have one enforcer - Chopper Harris…I liked the hairstyles so I supported Chelsea…

Not sure if Motty commentated on it or not but the 1979 final takes some beating.

Arsenal having led 2-0 with only 5 minutes to go are pegged back by Man Utd who score twice only for Alan Sunderland to pop up with a last minute winner.

Led to the famous quiz question. Sunderland did it in 1979 and Villa did in in 1981, who did it in 1980?

...and it was a "rare headed goal"...(I think Motty said that).

In the 70’s FA Cup final day was the sporting highlight of the year, the programs on BBC and ITV lasted from about breakfast to after 5he game, if you whatched it who can forget FA Cup final It’s a knockout, with Eddie Wearing commentating, the ride with the teams on the bus to Wembley, talk to the players on the pitch, and then the various expert panels pre match, Brian Clough was the star every time. Whatch the game the straight outside to have a kick about where everybody pretended to be the cup winner. For the younger ones there only used to be about a handful of live games on the telly in them days so you didn’t want to miss a minute.

As mentioned earlier the Arsenal ManUre game is the the one that I remember best. Great times whole family sat round the telly nearly all day, I don't even put time aside to watch it now and have no idea who the current holders are never mind the last 5 yrs.

Just remembered the first Palace vs Man U that finished 3-3 in 1990. Ian Wright and Mark Bright playing for Palace and was an absolute thriller. Followed by an absolute dog of a replay.

All of the above and I remember the Arsenal 3 Man U 2 from 79 with the Alan Sunderland winner at the end after Utd had levelled it.
