I thought these things (tier 1 academy nicking a player from a league 2 academy) were based on a formula which someone posted a link to and pretty sure it was a lot less than 100k  more like 25k or similar. Anyway looks like we got the better side of the deal in the end.

The cast off numbers of this system must be immense.   I seem to recall Hurst saying that the first time he was here they took on 3 trainee pros for 1 year, and then a new lot each subsequent year replacing the previous 3. A Fenty plan more than likely, as the apprentices never got time to reach any real standard. You can please some of the forumites some of the time but not all the forumites all of the time

And because instant success is a prerequisite , then it’s difficult to find space for younger players, no matter how good they are. Hence, why you see so many loans. The reserve leagues should be started up again so that the void between under 18s/youth football and men’s pro football is filled. On the other hand, perhaps his development has been harmed by going to Boro and doing nothing but playing meaningless U23 games for a few years which aren't competitive enough for players to develop the edge they need. Might well have had more of a chance staying here and trying to develop further with some first team appearances from time to time. Hurst has spoken disparagingly about the fitness levels of these youngsters who have come on loan and I get the impression he's less than impressed with the way some of the Championship clubs develop players.
