Just watching Scottish Cup 5th Rnd , Darvel vs Falkirk...Rumarn Burrell once of this parish came on as a sub for Falkirk.
One of those youth players who went up in the world from here and then not heard of really .....til now.

From us yes for an undisclosed fee. Went on loan a couple of places and then got released as many young players do from big sides. Now signed for Falkirk in the third-tier of Scottish football. Wasn't from around these parts, is from Birmingham and came to us from Scunthorpe's academy.

There was talk that when he left us the "undisclosed" fee was £100K.

I thought these things (tier 1 academy nicking a player from a league 2 academy) were based on a formula which someone posted a link to and pretty sure it was a lot less than 100k  more like 25k or similar. Anyway looks like we got the better side of the deal in the end.

I’d be shocked if we got 100k upfront for him

Think one of the other former high profile  youth proteges is now playing Sunday mornings locally as well.
The cast off numbers of this system must be immense.

I seem to recall Hurst saying that the first time he was here they took on 3 trainee pros for 1 year, and then a new lot each subsequent year replacing the previous 3. A Fenty plan more than likely, as the apprentices never got time to reach any real standard.

And because instant success is a prerequisite , then it’s difficult to find space for younger players, no matter how good they are. Hence, why you see so many loans.

The reserve leagues should be started up again so that the void between under 18s/youth football and men’s pro football is filled. There is the under 23s and premier league 2 but that’s only for those eating at the top table already.

Perhaps Burrell simply hasn't lived up to his expected potential - it happens with many youngsters. On the other hand, perhaps his development has been harmed by going to Boro and doing nothing but playing meaningless U23 games for a few years which aren't competitive enough for players to develop the edge they need. Might well have had more of a chance staying here and trying to develop further with some first team appearances from time to time.

Hurst has spoken disparagingly about the fitness levels of these youngsters who have come on loan and I get the impression he's less than impressed with the way some of the Championship clubs develop players.
