The Man City under.21s game is in effect a knockout game now. Winner, either in 90 minutes or on penalties, qualifies.

Mount played 3 times in 16/17 compared to 29 games on loan with Vitesse Arhhem and then a further 44 games with Derby in the Championship.

Chilwell a single game that went to extra-time , also played 8 times for Huddersfield prior to that one off game during a loan spell in 15/16 when he was 19.

7 games for Reece James followed by 45 on loan at Wigan.

Conor Gallagher clocked up 4 games in the competition, followed by 26 games on loan at League One Charlton, 21 games at Championship Swansea, then 30 and 34 league games at West Brom and Crystal Palace respectively in the Premier League.

Bukayo Saka played 4 times in the competition.

Emile Smith-Rowe has made 3 appearances in the EFL Trophy against 19 loan appearances for Huddersfield in the Championship.

Fikayo Tomori played twice in the competition, in contrast to 9 games with Brighton, 25 with Hull and 47 with Derby - all in the Championship. He also had a 17 game loan period with AC Milan before it was made permanent.

I know your not supporting the notion that the EFL Trophy benefits the England side, but just on those players alone I'm pretty confident that it's the loan system and/or progressing through the pyramid that helps aid player development more than a scattering of games in a tinpot trophy.

Harry Kane had 4 loan spells to aid his development.  John Stones started at Barnsley.  Jude Bellingham at Birmingham....

In 2016 the EFL said the pilot scheme was part of their "ongoing commitment to creating more and better home grown players"  We're in the seventh season of this competition.  Do we really think that the pilot is working?  Of course, this isn't why the Premier League teams have Under 23 teams in the competition is it...

But almost all of those player's first taste of men's football came in this competition. You can't say that was not a factor in them being able to prove they're capable and securing a loan move somewhere at a higher level than they'd otherwise have been able to.

I agree that the right way for clubs to blood youth is through the loan system and having relationships with smaller clubs, but you can't say all these top players started here and it was completely irrelevant to their development when that might be where they were scouted for loan moves.

The players not in the Town squad probably do.
