Andy Smith might have some video homework from the gaffer this weekend.

Great finish from Bob Hoskins.

Why? It wasn’t his fault Clifton lost possession in a dangerous area.

Wrong side of Hoskins. Ball watching. Terrible body position.

When Bowie checks back on to his left foot, the only danger is Hoskins. Smith starts pointing to the LB position but that’s not where the immediate threat is. You have to defend the goal.

Waterfall failed to spot it and didn’t cover but probably little he could have done.

If you look at the reactions of the other Town players, it’s Smith they blame, not Clifton.

Smith’s a young, inexperienced 20 year old CB. 90% of the time he looks Championship standard and we are lucky to have him.

ps. Clifton didn’t lose the ball in a dangerous area. It was just inside our half and, more importantly, half way towards the side of the pitch. It was 5 on 3 in our favour. All we had to do was defend the middle of the pitch.

I mean, to be fair, if he’d given a foul on Clifton they couldn’t have complained…

Looked like a foul to me, especially considering some of the free-kicks they were awarded when one our players breathed heavily down their necks.

Our goal was reminiscent of Rees/Woods/Childs. One for the kids there

You can't question Smith's positioning mate, it was a brilliant unstoppable goal and that's the end of it 😉

Watch it back again. 😁

When Clifton loses the ball / is fouled, Smith is stood slightly left of Hoskins. This isn’t great but it’s not a significant issue.

As Bowie drifts right, Glennon is covering the space down the left and Green, though knackered, is doing just enough to stop Bowie from going inside.

All Smith has to do is step a couple of yards to his right so he’s goalside of Hoskins. If he does this and closes the gap to Waterfall, Hoskins will either come short or run into the channel. Either of these options give us chance to get (even) more numbers back.

The only way Hoskins can score is if we let him run through the gap between the two CBs. But that’s what we do.

It’s still salvageable because Smith could turn sharply and run diagonally back towards the ‘D’ but instead he starts running towards the left back position.

It wasn’t even a particularly good ball from Bowie.  It was neck height but because Smith had run past it, he couldn’t cut it out.

Green even points to Smith where he thinks the ball is going and where the danger is. If you keep your eye on Green, when he realises Smith has run in the wrong direction and can’t intercept the through ball, Green gestures, ‘what the fûck are you doing Smithy?’, which is why Green looks so pïssed off when Hoskins scores a couple of seconds later.

As I said before, we are very lucky to have Smith and most of the time he is brilliant. But, understandably he is young, inexperienced and will make the odd mistake.

I can guarantee you that Hurst and Doig will have words with him about it. Smith won’t be making the same mistake again!

Players make mistakes and unfortunately some of these result in goals and without mistakes most games would end up 0-0, so no big deal in my eyes and no requirements for an in depth analysis of whether or not Smith was one or two yards out of position.

Talk about nit picking. No player is in the exact right place all the time, we are talking a few feet here and there. If players were on the exact blade of grass every minute there wouldn't be any goals. It still needed to be a brilliant finish though.

Not watched the highlights yet (he said, posting on the Highlights thread!), but on the day, I thought Smith was caught out of position - ball-watching a bit. I think he was guilty of not playing to the whistle as he expected a foul to be given against Clifton - as did I - and therefore wasn't concentrating enough. He played really well apart from that, so just one of those things which occurs from time to time.
