Turns out it was Sheffield United, in the League Cup. My apologies.
Bizarrely, Goram played 7 times for the Blades and 3 of them were against us.
I'm not senile yet. Also stand out moment when Bruce Grobelar was playing for Oldham ,Pontoon were singing 'How much is it for a goal' and he held his cap out.

It was sad news when it was made public a few months that Goram had been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer.
I got the diagnosed with the same 6 years ago. I am lucky they caught mine early enough to do something. I basically had my oesophagus removed. I am cancer free now whilst I have had to make some lifestyle adjustments am fine.
I am thankful every day. Sadly by the time Goram found out it was too late and it was terminal for him.
I am of the green persuasion when it comes to Glasgow football but had the utmost respect for him. He was a great keeper. Not the tallest but won so many points for Rangers with outstanding mstchwinning saves. He was a thorn to Celtic in particular for years.
It was just so sad that by the time he got to see a specialist it was too late.
I would advise anyone get to know your body and if something doesn't feel right get it checked out don't wait for it to get worse I know a lot of us are like that.
Hopefully getting to actually see a doctor will not continue to be as difficult as it has been during Covid. I think that was part of of the problem Goram had.

Glad to hear you came thru it Bottesford. Just wondered if it would be useful if you could give us an idea of what the early symptoms were. Might just save someone else

It's that fine balance between being a hypochondriac and a drain on the NHS and being in genuine need of help. Far less serious but I developed polyps in my nose five years ago and my nose was dripping constantly. I told the doctor I thought I had polyps and was told I didn't. The one in my right nostril grew and I could feel it but I kept getting told it was congestion as I filled my bin at work with toilet roll from blowing my nose every single day. This impacted me massively from a mental perspective and I remember the doctor telling me to blow my nose 15 times out of each nostril every morning after doing a rinse. I did this for 2 weeks and whilst lots of mucus came out, my nose still poured constantly so I went back. "Hmm, I think you may have polyps." I told him that 2 years previously! When I got referred, the camera showed they were huge, I had surgery to remove them and I've not had a problem since but it shouldn't have been that difficult to get help. Polyps can be cancerous but fortunately mine weren't.

An obvious early sign is if you suffer a lot from reflux and heartburn.. If you find you use say Gaviscon a lot. For me it was silent reflux. I wasn't often aware of it. It was my wife who pressured me to see a doctor as she became aware that I made ' funny noises' when I was asleep. Occasionally it would wake me up but most of the time I wasn't aware. I was under surveillance (endoscopy) for many years before they caught the transformation to cancer early. If not caught early you can develop difficulty and pain in swallowing. I'm afraid by that stage it is often too late for treatment. As was the case for Andy Goram

If you suffer from chronic heartburn,it can lead to damage of the oesophagus, leading to a condition called Barratt's Oesophagus which can lead to developing cancer of the oesophagus. If you have chronic reflux and heartburn get yourselves to the doctors it could save your life.

thanks for that. You may remember Steve Hewlett on Radio 4 who also succumbed to throat cancer. One of the most tragic things I've ever listened to as he charted his demise in a fortnightly series of interviews https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-39027583

Exactly this. I was diagnosed with Barrett's and was on regular surveillence after that. That saved my life.
