A quick statto post (and quiz)

I was wondering how our drought of 42 seasons without winning a title compares with other clubs.
By my reckoning, since we last won our division, an astonishing 98 different clubs have finished top of one of the top five divisions (75 clubs if you just count the top four divisions).

However, there are 12 league (i.e. Premier League and EFL) clubs who have not won their division since before 1979/80... how many can you name?

(Note that "won their division" means whatever league the club was playing in, not necessarily one of the top five).

I don’t know many but I have a feeling Rochdale have never won anything at all. I remember when they got promoted a few years ago it was their first promotion in 50 or so years

We are spoilt let's be honest 😂

All joking aside not many fans of EFL teams can say they've been the the old and new Wembley, millennium stadium and olympic stadium for play off finals

Only 2/5.
Villa won the league in 1980-81
Everton won the league in 1984-85 and 1986-87
West Ham won division 2 in 1980-81

Rochdale, as mentioned above, have never won anything.
And Tottenham's last title was in their double-winning season of 1960-61.

Who are they? Exachhly. (Readers of a certain age will understand).

Nope, they won the conference in 2005/6 and League Two in 2017/18.

They've won three titles since we last won one. Second tier in 1992/93, 2009/10 and 2016/17.

Well, the question was about current league teams... but in any case, they won the Conference/National League three times, in 1994/95, 1996/97 and 2017/18.

Had a feeling they did well under the ex Man Utd player, but couldn't remember without a search and that's cheating.

I give up. Nice day and going for a walk on the seafront, when some answers will probably occur to me.

Scunthorpe - you're right, they're not part of this question but in any case won League One in 2006/7

Peterborough - correct, last title was Division 4 in 1973/74

Barrow came up as National League champions in 2019/20.

Oldham - won Division 2 (yep, the second tier) in 1990/91.

Brizzle won the third division in 1989/90.
But yes to Crewe - never won a league title.
And yes to Port Vale - last title was Division 4 in 1958/59.

Tottenham can't possibly be a right answer, they were going to be in the super league, they must be massive! 😉

How about Crystal Palace?

Barnsley?

Not Palace (Division 1 in 1993/4) but Barnsley is correct - last title was Division 3 in 1954/55

You're spot on - Huddersfield won Division 4 the year we won Division 3 - but they're not one of the answers to my question (which was clubs that had been waiting longer than us)!

Two more to get (at least one of which we'll be playing in the coming season)...

You guys are doing really well at picking teams who have waited a long time for a title... but Derby's wait isn't as long as ours. They won the Second Division in 1986/7 (having finished third in the Third Division the previous season).

Another good guess as they haven't won a title in the top five divisions since 1938/9... but they won Conference South in 2009/10.

Two more to get.  Time for a couple of clues:

One will be playing in the Championship this season, the other in League Two.
Neither of them is more than 20 miles North or South of Grimsby. Or East for that matter!

Eh? Am I reading that right. There's only Hull (as the crow flies) that fits into that category.

Correct! Last title was Division 2 in 1929/30.

One more to get.

Everywhere is west of Grimsby isn't it?

East Anglia and Kent would beg to differ!

I've not been paying much attention to the thread. Has anybody gone for Wrexham yet? Or are they more than 20 miles north or south?

You're right that Wrexham haven't won a league title for some time - 1977/8 - but I seem to recall they're not members of the EFL at present

Morecambe
Peterborough United
Port Vale
Rochdale
Sheffield Wednesday
Southampton
Tottenham Hotspur
Tranmere Rovers

Great quiz Mike.

I actually fancy us to do well but think it could be Wednesday's year for a title. How about both of us?

Arsenal?

Has to be surely. Arsenal have only ever been relegated once in 1912-13 and only spent 2 seasons in the 2nd tier. The First World War stopped them resuming their top flight residency in 1915/16 but were back in the top flight when football restarted in 1919/20 and have been in the top flight ever since.

Arsenal last relegated in 1913. Morecambe weren't founded until 1920.
