How was Fenty ever allowed to get away with it? How did he end up staying on for another 10 years…

that was really good - loads of funny stories , but running through it all was that vein of regret. my immediate thought was - rather proves that saying - 'youth is wasted on the young'

Sounded like he’d heard about all the grief Paul Linwood got after spouting off & didn’t fancy the hassle. Hate all these banter merchant podcasts, really makes you think what absolute tosspieces a large proportion of footballers actually are.

Yeah, Parkin in particular.

I would like them to get someone like Ryan Bennett on as he came through under Buckley and established himself under Newell. In fact, didn't Newell take the club to court claiming we owed him a percentage of the Bennett transfer fee?
Bennett has gone on to have a decent career and always seemed to have his head screwed on so I would love to hear his take on things.

Most people on here creamed themselves when Newell was appointed. You only had to speak to any Luton fans to learn about his antics, shows a shocking lack of due diligence when appointing him.
That first half at Cheltenham away!!! Played like world beaters Second half, and quite possible, played liked they’d all been on special brew at half time

Again…I’m taking some credit, I didn’t want Newell. I said the same about him as runaway.
The club was copulated, copulated well before Newell arrived and just got worse. People believed the bullshit, some still do, hence why Fenty got away lightly back then.
If Sweeney is genuinely sorry and has recognised his mistakes then fair play, let’s face it, we went down but the single person that was impacted most by his attitude and lack of professionalism was him…

Would genuinely steer anyone towards it for a listen. Sweeney is fully accepting of all the stuff thrown at him on this thread alone. He doesn't hide from the fact that he was a waster and had a bad attitude. It's not verbatim but he ends his time talking here with "I mean it with no disrespect because it's a big club, but I thought I was better than that and I had the wrong attitude altogether".
Unlike Linwood who made fun of the situation here in 2009/10, Sweeney sounds embarrassed by it all. He doesn't glorify it, he recognises it as the perfect storm and one that he was both key in whipping up but also got swept away with.
Other points I enjoyed listening to were his views on the facilities, very critical of what we had and its reflection on the club (which he describes numerous times as a 'big club'), the role Woods was faced with and trying to change the culture in the dressing room but having to replace established names with kids.
Linwood sounds like an absolute weapon, even at whatever age he is now. Sweeney sounds like someone who was an arrogant tosser as a player but has grown up and is reflecting on where he's gone wrong.
He played a role in our downfall, no doubt about that. But you've got to question the set-up around the place when you've got a manager who's developing and encouraging a drinking culture at the football club and then brings in a squad of players to suit that. Hindsight is wonderful but the alarm bells should have been ringing loud and clear for a long time before anyone acted.
Brilliantly summed up. I think he summed it up as the worst set of 15 players you could wish for at one time, all good players but all liked the drink, one of the hosts then coined and you clearly had the worst manager thrown in for that environment. Like you, I don't think he was classless like Linwood, I found him a lot easier to listen too because at the end of the day like you say he was complimentary of the club to a degree and said he was ashamed of what he had behaved like all the way through his career.

He was a chubby fella anyway but he’s really got big
That's what being a booze head will do to you. The stories about Conlon might be funny if it wasn't so depressing. Laughing is kinda like punching down at somebody with a serious problem that needed help, alcoholism is a serious issue. Really the worst squad and manager for people with drinking problems at the time, seems like Sweeney was completely miserable at that point so used drink to escape which made things worse. Injuries and feeling dejected with his career so he's drinking then joins a squad of drinkers and straight up alcoholics, never a good combination.
