Ok, so the main man is out for a few weeks. Who steps into his place? Scannell? Holoran? Burgess (not seen him, I admit). Maybe even Clifton?

Massive few weeks for us.

Just heard Hurst in his usual pragmatic way say he doesn't know what is up with McAtee. "Something with his shoulder."  Says he could be out for the season or back next week...

He will go for an x-ray or scan or both tomorrow.

It beggars belief Hurst doesn't know more than he is letting on about his star player, but JT is just too nice to push it - like asking what Dave Moore thinks, how was he feeling after the game, is he in a lot of pain? We will just have to wait and see but it will be a huge blow if he misses the big games.

Only Scannell or JMD have the guile IMO

I would rather we go for a 4-3-3, we have enough in central mid now to do this.

Why can’t we just play 4-4-2 for a try ?

MF Scanz, Holohan, Jones/Clifton/or Fox, JMD

Up top  Taylor and Mani

Get some width, with Amos and Efete supporting, get some balls in, with MF runners like Holohan picking up the scraps around the edge of the box

Why over complicate it?, or have I gone too old style?

Tricky one. Should we abandon a system which has got us to 6th because McAtee is injured? I desperately hope that his absence earlier in the year made sure PH developed a plan B or even C to turn to.

JMD has the guile and the creativity and Holohan looks a good finisher but none of them can set the tempo and the aggression in the way McAtee can.

I don't think that Holohan has the touch to play that role. He's a good, attacking player who is good at getting into the right areas, but I don't think he's going to be linking up play and inventing like McAtee. JMD doesn't have the pace for the role, IMHO, and I don't think we've got anyone (other than perhaps Scannell) who would be a good replacement.

I expect Hurst will give Scannell a runout in the position but, if it doesn't look like it is going to work, we might well see a change in formation. I wouldn't be terribly upset to see two up front or another attempt at 4-3-3.

Big boots to fill but I would go with Scannell. He has a good turn of pace and his decision making is excellent. Just needs to work on banging his chest and diving into the odd reckless tackle!

It's very worrying as our bad run coincided with his absence as nobody could play his role and I still don't think we have anyone that can bring anything like what he can to the team in that area of the pitch.

Might be a case of 4-4-2 with Taylor and Dieseruvwe/Abrahams.

Think we’re far better equipped to play 433 than 442. JMD, Scannell, Wright and Sousa can all play the wide roles in a front 3 but I don’t see either Abrahams or Dieseruvwe playing up front in a 2 with Taylor - certainly not on today’s evidence. As far as the midfield goes, Clifton, Holohan and Fox for me.

I’d go 4-4-2, Not convinced we’d score enough goals in a 4-3-3 formation. Taylor too isolated. Taylor and Manny up top for me with JMD and Scannell supplying balls into the box. Fox and Holohan in CM.

My worry with 4-3-3 is that it so often becomes 4-5-1. I think we have players that can do aspects of what McAtee does but you still have to leave out something significant from his game. Of all the players that could have come out of today with an injury, he's the one that's the least replaceable.

Will be fine for next week, Mel Gibson's shoulder used to dislocate in every Lethal Weapon movie, he just smashed his shoulder against a locker and was shooting bad guys with no bother in the next scene.

Just in case the above is not an actual recognised medical practice and is cinematic license then I would go either Scannel or Sousa in his role.

I can’t get my head round Taylor and Mani in a front 2. I can see 4 3 3 with the players we have available now, with Holohan in advance of the other 2 in the midfield 3.

Saturday is our toughest remaining game - we are have a real shout for 5th now, but we can’t have a repeat of todays profligacy in front of goal.

Hearing it might be a dislocated shoulder, and that was posted at half time.

Anyway, no idea why they can’t get him in for an X-ray tonight. Didn’t Dave Moore have Adrian Forbes playing on a broken leg for a fortnight?

Can only really be Scannell for me.  JMD is a winger who is at his most effective when he's drifting inside with a drop of the shoulder, if you put him inside to start with I'm not convinced he'll be effective at all.  Scannell is a cuter kind of player and I think has played in that withdrawn role at a much higher level previously.

Can understand the push for 4-4-2 but I don't think we've really got the players to do that.  Mani and Abrahams up front together yesterday was painful to watch at times, I know they've had limited time together but they looked like they had only just met.  Both of them and Taylor are the type who need a more mobile player with a little bit of guile working off them.

4-3-3 seems a more natural fit with any two of Scannell, Sousa, Wright and JMD working off one of the three aforementioned strikers.  But I share the previously mentioned concerns that it just becomes 4-5-1 and the striker ends up isolated.   There would have to be instruction from one, if not two, of the three midfielders that they have to push on too.

When McAtee was out before, the biggest failing was that we tried to play exactly the same way.  I think it was Fox who was deployed in that role with what appeared to the be the instruction of replicate McAtee's style.  He's a one-off, there's no point trying to go like-for-like in that way.

Can Abrahams do it? Maybe not the best for the more midfield aspects of the role but i'd like to see him playing off Taylor..

Let Clifton have a go, he has played everywhere except No. 10 & No. 9 positions. Would like to see his energy through the middle.

JMD couldn’t play that role. He’d be blowing out his hoop inside 20 mins

I think the best fit for the number 10 role would be Scannell.

He might go with 2 strikers though.

100% Scannell.

I don't think Dieseruvwe will start another game in a GTFC shirt after his shocker on Monday.

433 for me, Scannell and JMD wide of Taylor, with Holohan and Harry getting forward from midfield, and Fox or Jones holding.

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"
