Kit sponsor? To replace Youngs? Or, an additional sponsor?

End of an era if so, albeit a pretty shìt one - it was all down hill from the demise of Dixons, wasn’t it?

I’m just holding out for something less tin pot than Woking’s Boz’s Fruit & Veg.

We’re moving into the Asian market and are replacing Young’s with Yeung’s.

Well if we’re going from Salmon Fishing in the Yemen to Crazy Rich Asians then that seems like a progressive step to me.

A company involved in the renewable energy round here would be good.

It is a shame if true but if the sponsorship is more about sentiment and we haven't tested the market for a number of years then we may be selling ourselves short. We are a 5th tier football club (possibly 4th next season) so I would still like the sponsor to have local links.

I think its been great to have Town associated with a local but widely-known and prestigious company like Young's for so long but all good things come to an end. Hopefully the new sponsor is just as big and paying more for the privilege of appearing on the black and white stripes, assuming JS and AP have used their connections here and it is not someone that makes us look tinpot.

Apparently they’re close to doing a deal with Pampers for next season, aligning with their playing philosophy of pìss up front, shìt at the back.

I doubt we'll be seeing naming rights for BP, as much as it holds special memories for all of us I wouldn't think a company would want it associated with their brand in it's current form.

My guesses are:

myEnergi
Tribe Impact Capital (or a company with links to them).

I would love to see us utilise back of the shirt sponsorship which I think would suit Docks and sleeve sponsorships providing they were a good fit. Boston have the brilliantly named ARM Poultry on their sleeve, a local builders merchant on the back of their shirt and the local Kia dealership on the front. Maximising sponsorship is key for bringing revenue in.

Do like the idea of docks beer or keeping it local. Although I don’t think Nicole’s would portray us in a good light!

As much as I like Docks Beers, I can't see it happening given there's a big push to remove gambling companies from football shirts.

I don't think there's a place for alcohol companies to be on them either (and I acknowledge they're much more than just the beer).

Id imagine it will be a company linked through AP or JS with their contacts in the business world.

In this day and age, a sponsorship of £200k is a drop in the ocean for most league clubs, and yes I know we currently arent in the top four leagues but if we have the intent to be promoted, we realistically need £500k a year to help the club. Give them as many signs as they want round the ground and naming rights of the stands.

If Docks have £200k lying around to stick on Town shirts then my theory that the sausage sarnies were a rip off will have been proven to be correct. We wouldn’t bin Young’s off for the same amount of money coming in anyway I very much doubt - we want to be pushing for half a mil at least as mentioned. We probably want to be getting a national/international company with good social media coverage to give us a bit of exposure while we’re still down here in football’s toilet.

When I played local football in the 80's, we were sponsored by Willy's Brewery. They had just started the micro brewery and had brewed a beer that they called Willy's.

The front of the shirt had a design of a hand pulled beer pump along the side. Across the top was the words Willy's Brewery and underneath the text said, "We like our Willy's pulled by hand".

Depends who or what it is. Crypto.com are splashing the cash on sponsorships and they will be after an English deal I'm sure but I don't think they would be interested in little old Grimsby given that they sponsor UFC, Formula 1, Serie A, PSG and also took on the naming rights to the Staples Center, in what's believed to be the richest naming rights deal in sports history.

Crypto is the future but there is a lot of garbage out there so you need to be careful but I would love us to be at the forefront of it if the cryptocurrency involved had utility and looked like being around in the long-term.

It might have been that way before but it definitely works both ways now - or it’s at least a good side effect for the sponsored party.

Agree about keeping magic beans Crypto out of football as well. I know people who’ve lost more on that than gambling.

You need to separate utility from memecoins. Yes it's a volatile market but there is plenty of utility within the blockchain space that would be a great fit. If a crypto firm came on board that solved a real world problem, you can't refuse that on the basis that someones mate lost money in one of the other thousands of cryptocurrencies out there.

Examples of crypto being good are Nexo, Celsius, Unstoppable Domains and of course the OG Bitcoin which is the fastest growing asset of the last 10 years. The list goes on. Unfortunately it's so easy to create a token and drum up some hype so people get scammed but just like the Dot Com bubble, there are some brilliant things being done too.

If you can't be bothered with the Telegraph's website, the article says Youngs wanted to extend their sponsorship deal for another year but the club have another sponsor lined up for 22/23.

I’ve heard the Colombian government have sponsored us on back of 15% of their national GDP being snorted on trains at Town away games. New shirt sponsor will read ‘Pablo’

Instead of the shirt being packaged with a small sachet of silica gel, they will contain a small bag of Columbias finest.

The club recently purchased some roubles at a discounted rate so will be giving those away instead as they are cheaper than straws.

On one hand it’s a bit of a shame really. Young’s is synonymous with the Town and the football club - 18 years is a long time for a consecutive football shirt sponsorship. From a quick Google there’s only Arsenal and Emirates that have had a deal in place for longer in England*.

My 8 year old lad is Leeds born and bred (so far just about escaping the accent) but he comes back to the area with me, the wife and his sister whenever Town are playing and occasionally to the games themselves.

He was out with the wife a few weeks ago in a Leeds branch of Iceland, when he suddenly pointed and shouted at the top of his voice “look mummy, GRIMSBY!” This is what he’d seen.

Anyone who knows me knows how proud I am of where I’m from, and daft little things like this always make me smile. And there’s the added bonus that the Youngs logo, being self contained and not too garish, works well on a black and white striped kit.

But that, absolutely all of that, is nothing more than sentimentality. And when did sentimentality…yada yada yada. Ultimately, it’s worth very little in terms of points on the board or finance.

If the new board has been successful in attracting a more lucrative partner then it’s absolutely the right thing to do, even if that means partnering with a business outside Grimsby or one with a dodgy logo (and I’ve no idea on either count). The 2 wealthiest clubs in the league will finish in the top 2 this season, and the third wealthiest has the division’s top striker on their books. Money matters.

To that end, I’ve always opposed the idea of selling the naming rights to Blundell Park. Again, for no other reason than sentimentality and tradition. But if that meant another £200k in the coffers for next season, it would be foolish to turn it away, wouldn’t it? To everyone outside of the media, it would still be Blundell Park.

We need to move on as a club, and whilst the level we’re playing at will remain a sore point until the end of this season at the very least, I think it’s fair to say that we’ve seen more positive change in the last year than we did in the previous decade.

*Edit: we’ve actually been with Youngs (2004) longer than Arsenal have been with Emirates (2006), so it may be the longest running in English football after all. You need to ask though, is that indicative of a sound partnership between the two organisations, or merely inertia on behalf of the old regime. Absolutely no fault on Young’s part, but you have to wonder, don’t you?

£200k you say? Walking down the Grimsby Road to see Paul Hursts' aces at the Sun Kissed Stadium.

What exactly is Sun Kissed, as it’s been mooted a couple of times on this thread?

Maybe we'll dodge financial fair play by having simply business as our sponsor and we'll be after haaland and mbappe in the summer

Agreed - no one wants baggy sleeves

The whole point of being sponsored by a company is that we give them exposure, not the other way around.

Not necessarily so. Stevenage got more exposure from Burger King than BK got from them.

BK used Stevenage for various FIFA video game related social media campaigns which resulted in Stevenage being the most played club in the world in career mode on FIFA 20. As a result Stevenage made a relative fortune compared to the usual numbers selling their 2 BK sponsored shirts that season (especially the dark blue with ketchup & mustard away shirt) all over the world.

Does advertising work?
The 25 away fans that come to BP, in Tier 5,  can't buy that many Fish Fingers to make it worthwhile.
As Poojah has written, I bet Young's kept the flag flying for the area more than GTFC in the last decade or so.
I know needs must, but I just hope the GTFC Young's break was amicable.

I issue the the conversation went along the lines of, what’s good for you? How does the benefit the club? We’ve explored other avenues, they can offer more, do you want to?

I know town fans have this desire to keep things local and all that but for me, as I’ve said, aside from one day in May 2016, a day quickly diminished through awful club management, You he are synonymous with the worst era for the club…

I really couldn’t care less about them not being our sponsor.
As long as it’s not some made up crypto company or betting then it really doesn’t matter…

Pretty sure it would be amicable split youngs got a bargain in sponsoring us due to a reluctance to eat at the same table as John fenty therefore there was no serious competition and they probably knew that once jf had left the table their  days were numbered

This is also a clever move should we get to Wembley for the playoffs than we release a new shirt for the occasion with the new sponsor across the front a win /win situation

I remember we wore our new Dixon shirts in 1998 but our sponsor at the time was Food Town whoever they are/were. An appearance at Wembley is the best bit of exposure we can expect to get at this level so I can't see Young's being too happy if we did that. There are only so many variations of a black and white shirt with Young's on the front so I think having a new sponsor on the front will cause an increase in shirt sales.

Lincoln have had multiple home shirt sponsors this season with the most recent one being Branston (not that Branston) and replica home shirts are sold sponsorless. Not sure I like that approach myself as a fan but I understand the commercial reasoning behind it.

I can remember the outcry on the north bank when Dixons sponsored us for that trip to Wembley. Hull where near the bottom of the old 4th. Div at the time with gates of less than 6000.

How times have changed.

To be fair, that is the exception rather than the rule (at this level of football, at least). The difference with that case study is that Burger King had a strategy —  it wouldn't have been mutually beneficial if they just stuck their logo on the shirts and did nothing else (as most do).

But take your point — if there's a strategy behind the decision, and the sponsors know that GTFC alone won't get them exposure through snippets on BT Sport and a modest social media presence, then nothing is out of the question.
