Prem teams will be able to make 5 substitutions per game next season, from a choice of 9 players on the bench.

This should extend to all professional leagues in my opinion, but I can see the National League objecting to it on the same grounds as the Prem did initially, in that the bigger teams with deeper squads have an unfair advantage.

Only allowing 5 on the bench in our league is wrong I think and should be reviewed.

Got to disagree with you here Ginny. 1 became 2, 3, now 5. Where does it end? 11?

The money men in each league will continue to Hoover up ever more players, and give them game time as subs. This will make the playing field less than even for everyone else.

Think how much time is wasted when teams cling to leads by making subs in the final few minutes of games. Throwing five subs on either collectively or individually will take something away from the flow and jeopardy of a game.

I’m with blundellpork. It’ll end up like American football. It’s also a way to cement the position of the big clubs.

I'm a halfwayer on this, think the NL should be 3 from 7.

That is a different issue. Squad sizes are capped at 25 in the Prem and must contain a certain amount of home grown players. This rule, or similar, could apply to all leagues, then it doesn't matter how many players you sign, as you can't play them all anyway.

The next issue is how many of that squad can be involved on a match day and I personally think that 7 subs is about right, with 3 changes allowed. I wasn't advocating 9 subs with 5 changes for our league, so I should have made that clearer in my post.

I think the Prem has gone too far myself, but then they usually do.

Hurst had 5 subs to make last season and I don't recall him using more than 3 often at all.

IIRC you could only make substitutions three times during a game, using up to the allowed amount of subs over those three times.  That should be retained i think.

During covid they allowed 5 subs but then imposed the most ridiculous rules about when they could and couldn’t be used.

I really don’t see this as an issue really, squads are capped at 25 so why not allow them to list all remaining 14 players and then 5 subs?

It’ll be rare that 5 are used anyway, some significant tactical switch during a game that and some managers won’t want to or have the ability to do that effectively.

How often is everyone fit in that squad of 25?

The 25 man squad in the Prem doesn't have to include under 21 players, so in reality a club would never run out of players.

(McAtee jr. is not in Man City's 25 man squad but has played PL footy this season - https://www.premierleague.com/news/2470630)

I would take it back to just 1 sub allowed (but from about 5 on bench) to be used in case of an injury  but then I'm getting old and think a lot of modern football rules are ridiculous
