Supposed to originate from the written abbreviation of Football Association  - as (As)soc -  plus the colloquial ending tacked on.
Prefer football myself.

Quoted from Les Brechin

How often is the foot used in that?

Pretty much all the time while the sport is played the feet are being used. Running, walking, kicking, to balance...

I'm not talking about running, walking etc, going on that basis we could call cricket football,. I mean, how often do they kick the ball, not very often.

In Ireland you'd hear both terms used. I'd use soccer myself to differentiate between soccer and Gaelic football!

Every country in the world recognises football as the name for our football.  Only USA do they call their version as football, nowhere else. In Spain it's " footbal " even though the Spanish for football is balompie.

'I walked in the dressing room. The window was open and I thought that a sea fret had got in. Then I saw smoke billowing from a pipe in the corner of the room...it was my centre-forward. He looked seven stone wet through. He went on to score thirty-odd goals that season.' Lawrie McMenemy on encountering the legend that was Matt Tees.

Some clubs in the English game play a variant called hoofball

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Football of course, always grates particularly when Sky use "Soccer Saturday", etc. They should know better.

Or they should move it to Friday to keep the alliteration.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.
