…in the Ivy restaurant, Leeds city centre 3pm

On the table next to me with his wife/girlfriend/friend

Sadly too noisy to hear

him discuss whether he’ll be playing on Saturday

Are we any closer to getting promoted since Hurst has been here? No

Has he been given time to achieve promotion by the chairman and fans? Yes

Hurst out

I'd give him another season on 53% of his current salary. If we can get him fit, he'll be like a new signing.

Given he hasn't played it's pretty obvious he won't be match fit, but he seems to have been largely injury free for a few months now. With us being in a poor run of form, Sousa doing well until the end product and some of our other wingers going back to parent clubs or injured, I'd have thought Scannel would have been given his chance by now.

The few times he has got onto the pitch for us last season you could see why he's spent a lot of his career further up the footballing pyramid. Doesn't guarantee he's going to be a world beater but this is one of those that I can't understand why PH doesn't let him show what he can do. If he doesn't perform then it's not likely to change our form. If he does play well then perhaps he can provide the quality in final third to create/score chances and affect an upturn in form.

He's fourth choice behind JMD, Sousa and Wright for me.

I’m a bit surprised to see so many acting as though any of this is Scannells fault. He was injured, got himself fit which is no doubt a lonely place to be at times and has watched on as he’s not been picked despite us having rotten form and being poor in front of goal.

If Hurst didn’t want him he shouldn’t have retained him in the summer and FWIW I think Scannell would be a great asset at the minute and is at least worth one game.

If your gonna be that negative, why don’t you add the tea lady and Norris the rubberman into it!

As others have eluded to, he’s played at a much higher level than almost all the squad so there has to be something that he has.

Yes it wasn’t his fault he got injured. He’s prepared himself again but hasn’t been given a chance yet. He has quality, hopefully he will be given a chance……

Hard to argue the case that he should be ahead of any of them though. JMD has come in and hit the ground running, Sousa has generally performed well and Wright has been superb in the short cameos we've seen him in. This idea that Scannell is good enough because was decent for Palace and Huddersfield a decade ago isn't grounds to bump him up the pecking order in my opinion.

Is he perhaps on some sort of a performance-related contract where he's due a bonus after a certain number of appearances? Could be the case that Hurst doesn't think he's worth another chunk of money going out. Admittedly, this would have to be a pretty substantial chunk of money, given the dismal run of form over the past few months.

For a start, he's not necessarily a wide player and has played as a 10 before now which begs the question as to why he wasn't at least tried, instead of Fox, while McAtee was suspended or injured.

The buck stops with the manager on this. He could have parked him with Rose & Morais but didn't and now hasn't used him.

I wasn’t arguing any point! I can’t back any player as I’ve seen town literally once this season. But, what I was trying to say was that given the level that he has played at, I wouldn’t send him to the glue factory yet.

What’s your opinion been of scannel when you’ve seen him play in the first team?

Definitely something not right with the Scannell situation.

If Hurst didn't fancy him, he would have been straight out the door in the summer.  Hurst had no issue in freezing out those that he didn't want.  Morais, Rose, Jackson Jnr and Gibson, plus maybe a couple of others I've forgotten.

Scannell got a squad number and was surely part of Hurst's plans, in some way or another.  I completely understand that in terms of Maguire-Drew and Sousa there's two guys who've cemented their roles in the first team squad ahead of him.  Then there's Max Wright who, when fit, has done more than Scannell, again when fit, so correctly he's ahead of him.

But Scannell can play across the front-line.  We had a large period of time where we didn't have McAtee and were either shoe-horning people into that role or changing formation to suit.  Scannell never got a chance in that time.  You can't tell me Scannell wouldn't have been a better option than Ben Fox in that role (disclaimer: I don't know if Scannell was fit when Fox played that role nor is it a dig at Fox, he's just not that type of player).

So not frozen out and in Hurst's own words, no rush to be moved on:
Quoted Text
"I have said to them that it's hard to see them getting too many opportunities, then it's up to them. That's me being up front with them, we're not under pressure to move anyone out.
.  Scannell must be a decent earner, even if you get 20% of his wages paid by a loan club that's money you can use elsewhere as opposed to just sat in the stands.

Scannell is only 31, I can't imagine he's made an absolute fortune from the game.  Not enough to never work again after this summer. Unless he has no intention of staying in the game, a whole year of rotting in the reserves of a mid-table fifth division side isn't doing himself any favours.

He is predominantly a right winger though. I agree with you that this one is on Hurst for not binning him off. He clearly wasn't expecting Joel Grant to come in and be exactly the same too.

I think the fact that he did nothing at both Bradford and Blackpool in the tiers below the second tier is more telling than his time at Huddersfield and Palace. There was that match last season that people reckon he bossed (was it Crawley?), but it feels like people are hanging onto that a bit. I genuinely can't remember him doing anything of note really in any of the matches I've seen him in.

He didn't really get enough of a run to suggest he's either good enough or not.

https://www.transfermarkt.co.u.....pos=&trainer_id=

His best run was 3 starts following a sub appearance.

In terms of quality his pedigree suggests he should be more than good enough for this level.  Fitness and injuries are a different matter altogether.

i think his issue is called playing the game.

how many appearances in 3 years?  13 and that was mainly under hollowhead in his first season.  It might be he has mental issues trying to overcome an injury thats not there for example.  Whatever the reason, first player out the door for me, and i don't get this notion that he probably doesn't put it in as much as the others in training so is always getting over selected when he should be busting his gut to get in the squad.

Anyway aint fussed on this one.  Harsh i know.

That would have to be one of the best contracts ever considering since the day he signed he has only played in 15 games and only completed 5 of them last season and this season he only came on for 5 minutes at the end of the Chesterfield game.

20/21 -  5

Prior to signing for us, he played in just over 1 full seasons worth of games in 4 years, yet someone decided he was worth a 2 year deal.

Not sure what some are expecting from him.

I mean just look at that wtf. Even looking at that in all its stark glory I've no doubt someone in the pyramid will be willing to take a punt on him in the summer thinking they can get a tune out of him at just 31.

Prior to signing for us, he played in just over 1 full seasons worth of games in 4 years, yet someone decided he was worth a 2 year deal.

that's because some people are just not realistic in there view.  He is no way earnt a new deal as far as I'm concerned.  I gave him the benefit of the doubt 2 year ago.

Wouldn’t touch Gary ‘bad back’ Birtles’. Can only train twice a week apparently 😉.

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

Just looking now and he only had one injury hit season before he came to us and still made 20 appearances that season. Its probably the case that in them days you'd have been finished alot quicker, couldnt make a living from playing four or five games a year for a number of years

I spoke to a retired physio about this and he said the number of pain killing injections given was ridiculous. Consequently, so many ex footballers are left with terrible, chronic and long lasting pain whilst having to negotiate 30 years of working life.

If he’s been kept on , is fit , playing and scoring in the reserves he should be given a chance in the first 11 . It’s not like the current first team are doing particularly well is it ?

He didn't retain him, he had a two year contract.

He could have been removed from 1st team squad and made available for loan like other contracted players, Morais, Rose, Jackson Jnr, Gibson.

However he was included in 1st team and this would suggest he was initially in Hurst's plans.

Considering he has been injured for most of the season so far he wouldn't have been available for loaning out
