Would not be surprised if vernham returned as he never really cut it at Bradford and has local connection

Don’t know about the other guy but could be a good signing

I'm informed this is possible on both counts. We badly need youth and legs and these two lads have quality. Tshimanga is a proven goal machine at this level, Vernam will find it easy. We badly need a proper number 9 as we look short of goals up top IMO.

The rumours fit the requirements, but as always, Paul Hurst will be working behind the scenes in his own quiet way until the ink is dry on new contracts.

Rumours have been rarer this year with the early signings, so will this one be the last rush to finish the team squad?

Tshimanga is rumoured to be training with Rotherham.

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"

Grimsby Town Football Club is singular. Otherwise correct.

I can't see Vernam coming back he's on a 18 month deal unless there new manager has said he's not part of the plans he did score 2 in 2 for Bradford.

Hurst tried to sign Vernam and he turned us down in January which to be fair I don't blame him the state we was in.

So Bradford will want money for him or possible loan we know from dealing with them with Ross Hannah so it won't be easy.

And yet bizarrely an exception is made for sporting teams, as it is with the police, so they're always referred to as plural.

So police are looking for...

Grimsby Town are hoping to gain promotion....

But any other group (the council, the government, Camra, the FA, the ECB etc...) it's singular, so it's 'is' rather than 'are'.

God, I sound like geek...

Well, Vernam has come on for the last 25 minutes of Bradford’s Friendly this afternoon so, unless this is the manager just taking a look, I would suggest he’s part of their plans moving forward.

I can’t see Tshimanga coming anywhere near us, he’ll move to League 2 minimum.

That's an Americanism that's become the normal now. In britain, companies were referred to as plural entities and that is how I always refer to them.

Er...no, it's not an Americanism, it's English grammar.

An organisation is singular rather than plural so it's the NHS is, rather than the NHS are.

Enough pedantry though....let's get back to GTFC.

To be even more pedantic for a bit longer, English has never had a formally accepted, universal grammar. The ‘rules’ evolve and are whatever is (are?) currently accepted. Some of the grammar ‘rules’ were attempts to impose Latin grammar completely inappropriately as modern English is a non-inflected language. 😉

Can i suggest you listen to a podcast called "Something Rhymes with Purple" with Suzy Dent and Gyles Brandreth. They, well Suzy actually, explain the meanings of words, English grammar and it's origins in many other languages. Many of your questions are answered in the podcasts.

Sorry, but it is.

American English refers to a company as a singular entity (is/was etc...) whilst in British English a company is generally taken to be a collective noun (are/were etc...)

Anyway, it's not worth arguing about. Mainly because you're wrong

Take it from someone with an English degree, a dissertation in the history of spelling and years reading books on the mechanics of our language…

English is flexible as hell. You can refer to teams or clubs either using the singular or plural. Generally, it’s ‘Grimsby are’ when talking about team performance, and ‘Grimsby is’ when talking about business performance i.e. financial. Even then, that’s not a hard-and-fast rule - just like there’s never been a rule to say you shouldn’t split an infinitive, or that you can’t start a sentence with a conjunction like ‘and’ or ‘because’.

Written language is designed to reflect the way we speak. So if people say ‘Grimsby are’ when the pedants think it should technically be ‘Grimsby is’ then just write whatever sounds correct. That’d be my advice.

The one rule I’d suggest we all remember, though, is to chill out and stop being so pedantic with each other.

And if we look to the future it would appear that Grimsby is on the cusp of signing a couple of players this week, hopefully players that can push the club forward. Grimsby are only a signing or two from a good side in my opinion…

That ok?

Hence the question marks after the players (I was merely guessing at them). Just what I heard about players from the 2 clubs. We could be looking at plenty of players, and quite rightly so, so any number of clubs could be thrown into the ring. They’ve gotta be right at some point you would’ve thought

Sorry, but it is.

American English refers to a company as a singular entity (is/was etc...) whilst in British English a company is generally taken to be a collective noun (are/were etc...)

Anyway, it's not worth arguing about. Mainly because you're wrong

Yep, It 100% is an Americanism that's got in under the radar. Until I dealt with big multi-national companies, I'd never even noticed a company referred to as a singular entity. It's getting much more common now, and I was watching a documentary where a UK tech company boss was annoyed at people using both versions so mandated that everybody refers to companies as a singular entity.

Thought the true art of text speak was dying out as it was needed for an interim technology (using alphanumeric keys on old mobile phones) as opposed to using touch screens with qwerty keyboards.

With respect PP that is simply untrue. I can remember in 1964 having a Use Of English essay returned marked down for every time I had used the phrase “the Labour Party are” and being told that I should only use “are” in a context where I was writing about a group of named members of the party.

I thought that too, but a lot of lads at work (who are significantly younger than me and have never heard of a Nokia 3310) write stuff like 'cya'.

Weird innit. Must be some sort of fashion for the 90s. My kids abbreviate a lot of stuff (like ‘k’ for OK, which is obviously too much to write) but not so much text speak - even LOL is gone because of 😂

Noticed this on the vid of the newly renovated Cheapside which has a ‘authorized personnel only’ sign.

Great thread this by the way - from two obviously balderdash rumours to grammar in six pages.

English degree hey…

So he’s wrong with authority. 👍🏼

Language and words have evolved over the ages.

Many words that you would consider to be very normal and well established English, were once slang and ill thought of speak, that found their way into English language and accepted now as the norm

We used to comment on “loosing” games.

I was told years ago that it is incorrect to start a letter “I am writing to you”.  This is self-evident and you would not start a letter “I am typing to you”.

Made more evident by street names. Something perfectly acceptable in previous times is now not ok.
For example did you know Love Lane was previously called Gropecunt Lane due to the prostitution that went on down there.

Moral(s) [morul] is to do with good behaviour.

Morale [mor-al] (not really used in the plural in English) is to do with the mood or spirit of a military unit or sports team, or other group of people.

E.G.
John Fenty showed poor moral judgement by introducing a convicted fraudster to GTFC and the council.
Despite the recent relegation, morale is high at GTFC since the departure of John Fenty. 😁

I know this thread has gone vastly off topic, but just to add to the grammar stuff...

The thing I've learnt most over the years, as a writer and former pedant, is to either embrace things just let it go. Yes, there are times when grammar is totally incorrect, and there are spellings I don't personally like (the -ize instead of -ise at the end of words) but a message board isn't the place to pull people up over it.

I'm fascinated by language and how it evolves. The more flexible it is, the more of a future it has. People all around the world speak English — mainly because of our colonial history, but also because it allows us to be more expressive than other languages. That's its real strength.

Take away that ability to play with it, bend it, abuse the so-called rules and you're left with a structured language like Latin, which died off because it was never suitable for the way people would evolve to speak in the future.

The way we speak today is different from the way we spoke hundreds of years ago - even decades ago. Written language needs to evolve with it.

Remember when 'email' had a hyphen? Read a book that was written pre-1940 and 'today' was spelled 'to-day'. Anything that's currently hyphenated e.g. 'free-kick' will probably lose its hyphen in time, like 'straightforward'.

Free kick is two words Rich. Needs no hyphen and if joined it surely loses some meaning. Do we join free shot or free hit?  I'm not sure about straight forward being one word either. But I agree about hyphens in general terms, a fairly recent fashion going out of fashion.

You are right. Got myself confused - meant to say 'kick-off'. You see it with a hyphen, but also as one word.

I wouldn't say that all hyphenated words will lose their hyphen - just those that can 'afford' to. And by that I mean, those that (over time) people choose to drop. You can see the trend. Words like 're-instate' are just 'reinstate'. At the moment, both are acceptable.

My favourite football term is 'resign'. A manager tends to resign but players tend to re-sign. In this example, the hyphen is crucial to the meaning of the term, yet people will happily say Shaun Pearson resigned for us.

I think the next to disappear will be colon and semicolon which is a pity. They do valuable service in breaking up and making sense of long lumps of prose.

I think the next to disappear will be colon and semicolon which is a pity. They do valuable service in breaking up and making sense of long lumps of prose.

I had a lot of problems with my colon until I had surgery, then it became a semi-colon.

I was waiting for someone to do that. I don’t mind playing Ernie Wise to someone else’s Eric Morecambe.

I have worked with a lot of people over the years that do not have English as their first language.

These sentences always baffled them and when they asked, "why dose the same word mean two different things?", it was very difficult to explain.

The bandage was wound around the wound.
The farm was used to produce produce.
The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.
We must polish the Polish furniture.
He could lead if he would get the lead out.
The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.
Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.
A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.
When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.
I did not object to the object.
The insurance was invalid for the invalid.
There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.
They were too close to the door to close it.
The buck does funny things when the does are present.
A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.
To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.
The wind was too strong to wind the sail.
After a number of injections my jaw got number.
Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.
I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.
How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

Or did Latin just evolve into Italian? Look at how English has changed over 1500 years. The Latin that the Church and other elites sought to preserve for universal use was arguably just a snapshot from a particular time. It’s be like trying to keep Old English alive.

NO!

Could HAVE
Should HAVE
Would HAVE

'going forward' - two utterly wasted words
EG: We are going to do this 'going forward' - well, when else would you do it?

Shop assistants: "Would you like a bag today?"
Me: "No - I'll struggle home with the shopping and come back for the bag tomorrow"

Loads more... rantings of a 60-year-old!

To that I will add:-

THERE- In that place.

THEIR- Belonging to them.

THEY'RE- They are.

They're there in their finery (other words are available).

I'm actually not very good at grammar, though I do try to get it right. Colon's, semi colon's and apostrophe's usually do for me, but then there is not much call for perfect grammar in the construction industry.

I've more than likely offended the grammar police with this post.

Yeah, back to the rumours.

I don't post them often, and my 'source' last told me about Meynese signing a couple of days before it was announced, but hasn't told me any since....

He says we was/are in for Tshimanga, and whilst we haven't been turned down, it seems highly unlikely, but fair play for the effort. I think this was Optimism rather than anything else.

Vernam talks have happened again, but the player himself wants to try stay with Bradford. Apparently Hurst believes this one could come more realistic closer to the season starting...

Only got this by asking, rather than him telling me, so don't think he's confident in any of them happening at this stage.

So - if so
Best of luck to Ira - I would have liked to have seen him at Grimsby Town another season - think he’s got a good brain and some striking skill - given some service.
UTM

Yeah - agreed. I asked him if there was any scope for him to stay and fight for a place and he said.

"nah mate. Wasn’t in his plans for when he got in"

Shame - think he could have been a good squad player in the conference- better than many players we had over the years in the conf.

Hope he gets another club and a chance - deserves more of a chance at this level

Superb!

Speaking to a lad that supports reading at work today, he reckons we could do a lot worse than having a look at a lad released by them called Jayden Onen. Many shocked that he wasn’t kept on.

Am sure there’s plenty of options out there. It’s just good knowing we won’t have a squad of 62 next season

Bottom line is Swin is a town fan through and through.

Him and I have disagreed on a number of occasions but he has every right to an opinion and this is a Forum for opinions.

He was nothing more than forthright in his views and how he put them across, but it doesn’t make him any less of a town fan than anyone else.

Not by me!  Please go back to the hole you've been hiding in for the last few months.

Oysters go right through me.

I've just been around Loch Fyne, which is famous for it's oysters.

I didn't partake. Just the sight of them is enough to put me off.

They say they’re an aphrodisiac but they ain’t all that.

I had a dozen on Saturday night and only seven of them worked

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

I agree, this is becoming pathetic.  Someone starts a FOOTBALL thread then we get numerous pages of puns, so called jokes, and anything else BUT football!
