I hope Paul Hurst watches this video. Especially the part about Alan Buckley.

Buckley could not care less about who the opposition was, how they played or what their tactics and systems were.

Nothing on the boards, its all "about us" !

Get the ball wide, quality crosses into the box and most importantly "pass and move" !

How refreshing !

I think he summed it all up at the end. Team spirit with the right recruitment and he praised Hursts' ability. A positive future is not about journeymen, outstanding quality players but about those who are going to bond together for the benefit of the club.

As he pointed out Buckley had respect and the players played for him, and he respected them and that is what we need this coming season. Players who believe in Hurst, Grimsby Town, and the future of a new beginning for a sleeping giant.

But PH is not on his own when it comes to 'overthinking' the opposition. Seems to be the modern way - especially among lower leagues
How can we stop other teams playing
I agree by the way - get a system and let the opposition worry about us
Buckley was brilliant - 442, pass and move, balance throughout the team
I can't see how those principles need to change

But it is a fact that a number of teams now play not to lose - and it is very hard to stop a long ball lump it team dominating a match

We need a definite style - too often we fall between two stools IMO
Neither slick passing and fast breaking or strong long ball

Team spirit, bonding and togetherness not a problem with PH - just hope he can find some gems in the summer to gives us that bit of class you need at all levels

What genius thinks you shouldn’t listen to John McDermott? Wanna say why?

I understand what you are saying about teams that come set up not to lose, however many teams came to Blundell Park with this plan but were unable to cope with Buckley's pass and move football.

They all knew how we would play but stopping us was a different matter !

That's always been my opinion, far too often we urine about with our team rather than putting our best team out which obviously didn't work  last season.

Not helped by the fact every club in the EFL has access to all the games of the opposition so far too much time spent analysing them than our own performances.

I don't know if the NL has a similar system

Am I correct in thinking John Macca is our all time highest appearance holder?

If so, how's about renaming a stand after him?

If he isn’t he must be close to it.

I actually spoke to Paul Hurst in the summer after we got promoted from the NL and one of the things he said was that it wasn't always easy to get footage of opposing teams to analyse due to some of them not being professional clubs and not having the camera footage etc.

Very hard to believe that the shy lad from the North East I met so long ago turned into the confident man in this clip. John came here in the days of Nichol and Booth and was wanting to be a midfielder. The only opening was on the left wing but John stuck it out on the touch line, developed into a two footed player and had a good burst of speed. From left wing to right back was a big switch but it was the making of him. You don’t make over 700 appearances without talent.

Like I said, in the EFL all clubs have to film the home games in wide angle, then they are available to all clubs.

In the NL the League rules insist that all home games are filmed and uploaded to a media centre but I would think that was for the use of BT Sport, nothing about opposition clubs having access to that footage.

Some great football when God was manager.
Some fantastic days.

Problem now is most managers go out with the attitude 'let's not lose this game' rather than 'let's go win this game'

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Totally understand the Buckley respect and after the absolute sh!te since, it’s deserved. But IMO..watching a Buckley team could also be frustrating. The times the team would pass it around the opposition box for what seemed an age without a shot on target. Pass and move is great to watch up to a point. Also, if I remember correctly the Buckley teams had a habit of giving goals away in the final minutes of a game. Also frustrating.

There definitely was an element of passing it around the opposition box looking forward the perfect opening at times. What wouldn’t we do for that sort of frustration now.

Assuming it comes with the sublime passing and movement we enjoyed getting to the penalty area.

I always felt that the late goals that came after what seemed like 90% possession came in those games against the Derbys of the world who had players who were individually better than ours. The sort who saw a chance and took it.

Time has somewhat dulled the senses on here I'm afraid. When Buckley left Town for the second time "Look North" did a vox pop near the Imp and interviewed a few fans all of whom agreed separately that Buckley had taken the club as far as he could and that the football was boring....

Buckley is a legend, but the football in the 1999/2000 season was dull and below the standards he had set himself. Especially the final third of the season...

Played 15
Won 2
Drew 5
Lost 8
For 5 (0.33 per game)
Against 18 (1.20 per game)
Points 11 (0.733 per game)
