It’s a shame Morais didn’t put his head 6 inches from where Payne wanted it to be. He would have just given up on it.

I remember when we signed him seeing a few comments looking forward to 'a big horrible' centre forward who gets in the faces of defenders.

To be honest, and before today's indiscretion,  I have been amazed how many times he has been picked. File under "the many lazy b@stards" to pull on a Town shirt. I would much rather have seen Jackson Jr been given more game time.

Dunno why there's so much hatred - he's still one of our top goals scorers

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

Please don't shoot the messenger...!

The Commentary on the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players
(RSTP) provides examples of when a contract can be terminated for just cause. It
explicitly provides an example of a player who regularly argues and often fights with
teammates. However, it is the player’s persistent misconduct/breaches that enables the
club to terminate the contract with just cause. One incident of fighting with teammates
does not allow the club to terminate the contract.

Seen the ‘limited’ footage of the Payne - Morais incident and it looks like Morais is aggressing and Payne passive - until the retaliatory head movement.
Just wonder why Morais needs to be so aggressive to a fellow player, whilst still on the pitch - when it appears the half time whistle has already been blown?

Morais and Williams were both getting  frustrated with their games, the shape probably suited Williams but he was hardly passed to , Morais was on the wrong side and suffered as a result....I think that last passage was the last straw for him...trapped on his left foot with little help he played a ball into a fairly sensible area...Payne barely made an effort for it but put plenty of effort into complaining to Morais about the pass....if the game had carried on I think nothing would have come of it but right on the whistle gave both the chance to have another chip at each other

Laughable posters take a pop at Hurst after paynes sending off. Let's face it the team is far better than it was under Hollybobs. Its in the attacking third that's cost us all season. How the hell was Hurst expected to bring in a proven goal scorer in Jan. All of those are already playing with clubs. What he has done is made us harder to beat and organised with the shite he inherited. Manager stays for me. Payne is his own man and made his own choice to assault his own today. D!ck head

Payne has been stealing a wage since he signed, he falls out with every girl private (his words, his new bit of stuff is a family member) and he cost us today.

Sack him and make him walk home...

That explains Morais behaviour to Payne - but in my opinion - the discipline (particularly as Morais is a very seasoned professional) would be to let Paul Hurst decide in the dressing room at half time?

That’s not how football works.

Rightly or wrongly.

If someone isn’t pulling their weight you would expect the senior professionals to ‘explain’ that on the pitch, which is what Morais was doing.

I could put down a long rant which would test the swear filter to destruction, but what is the point?

Every expletive I could utter has already occurred to everyone and to be honest, wouldn't even make me feel any better.

It was an act of breathtaking stupidity in a crucial game.

About the only thing I can say is FFS.

Not going to dignify the idiocy with further typing.

We don't know the full facts of the altercation between the two but I would have thought as the half time whistle had been blown an experienced referee would have shown diplomacy & suggested that the two of them sort it it out in the dressing room before wielding a red card.

Tbf to the ref he can’t just make up the rules on the spot. By the letter of the law, it’s a red card. And that’s what he got.

No. Violent conduct is violent conduct. Doesn't matter whether you headbutt a teammate, an opponent or someone in the crowd. It's a red card & a 3 game ban.

The rules are very simple. The referee had no choice.

Nonsense. He had no option. Red card.

However, he couldn't even make the effort to nut him properly. Lazy sod.

Morais either showed admirable restraint or realised he would get battered if he went for him. If that had been me I'd have put Payne on his a*se.

Morais either showed admirable restraint or realised he would get battered if he went for him. If that had been me I'd have put Payne on his a*se.

I think it was a breakdown in communication:

Morais [making polite conversation]: “Portugal’s for us green list”

But Payne hears: “Paul’s gonna say us Green’s missed”

Payne gets angry. Thinks Morais is suggesting he should be subbed for Matt Green and leans in to check he’s heard correctly. Ref pulls out the red.

We don't know the full facts of the altercation between the two but I would have thought as the half time whistle had been blown an experienced referee would have shown diplomacy & suggested that the two of them sort it it out in the dressing room before wielding a red card.

??
Bizarre analysis of the incident.
A clear headbutt on a fellow player in front of the referee.

You know sometimes you can admit the referee has made the right decision??

Wholeheartedly agree, hardly knocked him unconscious did he? Sensible ref tells them to get off the pitch, talks to PH and yellow card if you want to be pedantic.

Can you point the forum to the rules which allow this?
Its one of the clearest red cards you will ever see & probably one of the dumbest decisions by a player.

I don't think you can blame Hurst for bringing in Payne. I think it's fair to say bringing in a bit of a nasty illegitimate was a chance we had to take from (I guess) the limited options out there at the time. He has done a few alright things but has also been an accident waiting to happen.

As Gary Croft said tonight on RH Payne was bloody lucky not to be red carded last week. Sarcastically slow clapping the ref when he was already on a yellow.

The guy is an accident waiting to happen. We can't afford to go down to 10 men in any game. It's not like he achieves much on the pitch anyway. May as well play Jackson.

For me I would just get rid now. I can't imagine his continued presence around the squad will help morale.

Hopefully Payne's contract is terminated.

I have a very responsible job and if I walked into work on Monday morning and did what he did today then I would be sacked on the spot and escorted off the premises and I would never get to work in the industry I am employed in again as my name would be mud.

We don't know the exact words Morais used but I want to see players calling others out. It's called leadership. Hurst is saying they are both to blame which I think is harsh on Morais.

What even if he went up to him and said what we all know? Something along the lines of “ you’re a c**t Payne” then again maybe Fil should get a pay rise for saying what many suspected.

Your point about leadership is an interesting one as no disrespect to anyone but we’ve been sadly lacking in that department on the pitch this season.

plus he knew Payne and had got the best out of him at Shrews (and he's had a pretty good partnership with the shop) so in the absence of sergio aguero being available to us in january it was a reasonable call to make

ps when the knowitalls next say 'you can't judge a new player upon what his former teams' fans say' can you please refer them to Stefan Payne/Tranmere fans and gasheads?

Football is its own worst enemy at times. Hides behind contractual nonsense and rhetoric that has no depth.

Payne should be sacked, simple as. It’s gross misconduct. It’s arguably cost us the chance of a result and brought the name of the club in to disrepute.

I mean the headbutt summed him up because even that was half arsed.

Morais didn’t have to say anything but then perhaps it gets tiring working with someone who has the audacity to moan yet doesn’t do their job properly.

I guess the club, in theory, will carry out an investigation in to what Morais said and decide his fate to. Would he be a great loss? Probably not, we’ve been better without him in the side to be fair.

I was hoping Payne would come in and help shithouse us to survival, angrily proving a point/trying to earn a longer deal like Barry Conlon in 08/09. Unfortunately he's been more like the Barry Conlon of 09/10 (and that's harsh on Conlon, who despite 2 reds, at least managed 5 goals). Definitely one of the laziest players I've ever seen.

From Hurst's comments on Humberside, I'm not expecting Payne to be sacked.

I do think that Hurst's comments about a squad rebuild at the end of the season is something to look forward to. How much of a budget he will have to do that will depend on how much money the new owners are prepared to put into the club.

Will it be a squad that get us out of the NL - or one that is built for the future - ie a climb up through League 2 at least.

Interesting times ahead though.

Doesn't really matter, he will now be banned for the next 3 of the remaining 6 games and he will unlikey be picked again but if Paul Hurst does pick him again then he can intercourse off as well.

The full facts are that Morais played a not great ball down the line for Payne to chase but he didn't bother to make the effort. Morais got a monk on and started giving Payne some excrement and Payne retaliated mouthing off to Morais and it continued right up to the point Payne put his head onto Morais' head right in front of the referee who had  no option but to send him off.

The best case scenario we could hope for is that he is automatically banned for the next 3 games for the sending off, but then the club also internally ban him from playing for the remaining 3 games too.

I doubt he has moved to the local area since January, so he can pack his things and just fade away until the point that nobody remembers that he ever played for us.

What is good is that since being here he has changed his surname, to reflect his overall stature at the club, to Stefan Payne-in-the-bottom (obviously 'bottom' wasnt my preferred choice of word)

No point sacking him. 6 games & 27 days left of the season which he’s banned for 3 matches.

Just tell him not to bother coming in. Fine him 2 weeks wages & let his contract run down.

The attitude problems were kinda plain to see with his body language and yelling in previous games. The last major incident was getting angry about being subbed and throwing his boots after he came off, this incident is probably just another big flare up on a list of many, most of which we don't see. Beyond the many lazy performances he just comes off as a bit of an anus.

I think the biggest disappointment with Payne is that he's probably the one that Hurst pinned his hopes (and I'm guessing a large chunk of his limited budget on).

The likes of LJL, Coke, Lamy, Habergham will all have been relatively cheap because of their situations.  Payne on the other hand had a contract, one that you have to presume we took over to some degree.  We were in gambling territory and I don't for a second blame Hurst for bringing him in, but it has been a very disappointing signing all round.

As a delivery van driver probably...

I wouldn’t want him delivering stuff to me. He’d either give up before getting to the delivery address because it wasn’t where the van was parked, or miss the address completely blaming the van for not stopping.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

At least if Montel Gibson goes back to delivering groceries, you will be able to track your delivery on Instagram.

What has happened to the customary apology to the fans, teammates, management etc which are usually churned out after incidents of this kind. Even if the player doesn't believe they've done anything wrong, they usually put out their side of the story and apologise for the consequences of their actions, letting fans and teammates down etc. If Payne has made a statement defending himself or any sort of an apology, I've yet to see it.

This could be our "Monkhouse injured" moment this season. Him not being available means another player will HaVe to take his place and maybe grasp the opportunity and bag a couple of hat-tricks in the last few games.

All the more reason for Hurst to feel let down big style, it seems he put most of his eggs in Paynes basket and was rewarded with them being thrown at the wall.
Some players need to grow up, the real world outside football is not so forgiving

I suspect that there is a period of cooling down and that everyone has been told not to take to Twitter etc and make the situation worse.

If I was the club the message would have been to Payne (and possibly Morais) 'your future at this club hangs by a thread, airing your views on social media will cut that thread completely. Your choice'.

If Morais was just telling  / having a go for being lazy then Hurst should not be doing anything to Morais for having some desire and fight in him for the team . Having said that who was captain , as its there job to tell players or are they afraid of him.

We don't know what was said, Morais has the right to have a go at Payne for not chasing a ball but Payne also has the right to point out it was a sh*t ball. I've played in a 100 games where there's been an exchange like that (usually based on my sh*t pass..) but something else has to happen for one player to nut another.

Yes it's a bad ball but it's League 2. The least I expect is the intended recipient to carry on chasing.

Exactly. It's not like he's chasing down a Premier league International defender. All players at this level are prone to member-ups. Putting pressure on them can only enhance that chance. There's so many examples over the years of defenders making a hash of a clearance while under pressure it's baffling why most teams managers don't insist on it all the time.

I've never watched Payne put in a full 90 min shift. He only seems to chase balls within an easy grasp, and those he doesn't think he''ll catch he won't try.

This season and next we need players to it give it their all and not part-time performances on full-time pay.

It's pretty clear that Matt Green isn't going flat out to try and earn a new contract so why not give Ira Jackson another opportunity?

Yes I do as well. As much as I like his attitude in the time I did see him he done some things  ok but overall seemed a bit lightweight for me. Perhaps thats why Hurst has been reluctant to play him ?. Having said that he's still young  and could improve.

If we are still going to play 4-3-3 would play Williams rather than Jackson, Williams hasn't done much in his town career but he has showed small glimpses of quality and pre his injury he did do well with FGR in a forward 3 I believe

Depends what the plan is next season with Williams. If he will be going regardless, then play Jackson. He's not ready for this level yet, but a bit of experience could help out next season. Same with Gibson, who did ok when he came on in Hurst's first game but has been absent ever since.

Why is this bad judgement?

They have let temperatures cool.
They will have discussed it internally.
They've had time to weigh up the options and get advice (legal, HR policy)
They've controlled the narrative and not allowed social media to manage the club.

I'd say it is an unusually good piece of work by the club. We'd normally get a knee jerk statement from the Principal Funder talking badly spelt and grammatically painful cobblers.

I'll agree with you 100% if the statement says we've sacked Morais and offered Payne a 3 year contract!

That's what he gets automatically for getting sent off for violent conduct. Very different to what the club's internal disciplinary decision might be.

I mean...it's hardly assault is it. He lightly touched his head against Morais', and didn't cause any damage or pain by the looks of it.

It is, however, a red card offence on a football pitch, and incredibly stupid/unprofessional.

This sort of thing happens all the time in football, usually in the dressing room at half time and not on the pitch in front of the ref. Have a look at Hugo Lloris and Son on YouTube. They had to held back from each other with Mourinho watching passively.

When I learnt a bit about law (many years ago) - assault was confronting someone and battery was physically touching them.
So perhaps Morais is guilty of assault - but as a result of the assault, Payne may be
guilty of battery - if he touched him

I'm not sure that telling a team mate to "chase the flipping ball" can be classed as assault.

Town should allow him to bring a work mate to the inquiry,  Let him have the opportunity to cross examine Morais. to be given a fair hearing and to take everything into account.    AND THEN SACK THE LAZY sharp object.

Because it is Payne and not that well liked, you all want him sacked using this incident as an excuse. If it was Clifton and Hewitt for example, I very much doubt there would be the same outcry. If players were sacked every time the squared up to each other, every team would end up with half the number of players they started with!

He does not need sacking he is suspended for 3 games and then we only have three games left before his contract is up.

He will not get a new one with us so goodbye Payne.

So how many games have you seen where a player from the same team puts his head onto that of a team mate and gets sent off?

Sacking will save money. And more importantly, strict disciplinary action often leads to an upturn in performances.

6 games to go and we need those points. Sack Gibson as well and it might guarantee some wins.

They are under contract so unless there is very good reason, you just can't sack them. If we let them go we would have to pay them the remainder of their contract unless they come to some arrangement,  but nobody will walk away for free and give up money.

There are only 6 games left, Payne is banned for 3, Just don't pick him for the last 3, make him train with the juniors, job done.

Ahhhhh......the cheap option, even if he was sacked under gross misconduct we would no doubt be liable to pay him off with something.....just dont pick him for 3 games, no appearance money, no chance of a goal bonus (although that was limited) .

Might be harsh but we don’t know what he said to Payne and the content of his verbal volley, even if it may have been deserved, and given the outcome of the decision it’s probably fair to say it wasn’t
“Chin up Steff you’ll get to the next one”.

Neither a big loss but in all honesty that probably applies to pretty much all our squad at present and it will be all change again come the summer.

So Morais had a go at Payne and he basically gets the sack?

Players have a go at each other all the time on and off the pitch, winning teams or losing teams if it wasn’t for Payne’s reaction would Morais been told to leave the club?

He clearly doesn’t want him at the club next season but why label him as being some sort of trouble maker when he clearly isn’t?

Are we any closer to getting promoted since Hurst has been here? No

Has he been given time to achieve promotion by the chairman and fans? Yes

I would not have been surprised if Hurst moved morais on even before this incident. Now this suspension means I would be very surprised if he isn't moved on.

Morais has another year on the contract he signed in December 2020 but Hurst said the Portuguese "was not in his plans" for next season before the incident.

Good riddance to Payne, absolute rubbish. He may have done well for Hurst elsewhere but he failed here. Morais was never a Hurst signing and, to me, could never put in a full 90 mins on the pitch and was past his use-by date.

We don’t know what was said or what followed in the tunnel and dressing room so any comments are speculation.

On the Matt Dean interview, Hurst makes it very clear that he sees Morais as playing a part in the incident.  There's clearly much more behind this than we know about.  Anyway, we won't see either player again.

Definitely this.

Few things that Hurst said that suggested there's far more to this than we know about.

Thought Payne had started to put together some better performances going into the Bradford game but fair enough.  Morais' shunning is probably more of an issue just because of the lack of options we've got out wide.  If we go 4-4-2 that only really leaves Lamy and Williams as potential wingers, neither of whom Hurst seems particularly excited by.  This lends itself to to 4-3-3 we had used for a few weeks before the Bradford game, but without Payne we're down to Hanson, LJL and one of Green or Jackson, again neither seem to be players Hurst rates.

Just in terms of numbers, we're very thread bare at the minute.  Which is astonishing considering the turnover of players we've had.

Sorry PP.

Morais signed on 11th December, Holloway resigned on 23rd December. It was during Fenty's reign with the help of runaway that we signed the pensioner him. Fenty would have known all about Morais and let a few coppers out of the bank to pay him.

Yep Fenty's fault, again and again, etc.

Lenny and Payne to start our first game next season in non league. You heard it here first

Payne being here is purely a gut feeling as Hurst likes to work with players he already knows and Payne is typical of that ilk and yes I wouldn't be surprised if we start next season with a front 2 of Shop & Payne-hope I'm wrong though.

Hurst says that they both "won't play for the club moving forward." He doesn't just say this season. So I'd be shocked if Payne is here again next season.

Hurst says that they both "won't play for the club moving forward." He doesn't just say this season. So I'd be shocked if Payne is here again next season.

probably right, but he wasn't as unequivocal about payne as he was Morais. Sounds like it had been brewing for a period beforehand and last Saturday was a culmination. i wonder if Morais said summat completely unacceptable, which is why he is being treated as equally culpable

Here's a possible situation based on nothing but my imagination....

Morais has been having a go at Payne regularly on the training ground and in games. Payne's confidence is shot to bits as a result and Hurst was looking for a chance to get rid of Morais. Unfortunately Payne has snapped and left Hurst with no option but to get rid of them both.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Payne playing for us next season

This post is worse than the football we played under Holloway

Either way this disappoints me a bit. Morais in one of the games I saw was the best player for Grimsby. Getting on a bit but still has quality and could do a job in non league to a very good degree if used as and when. Maybe Hurst because of his budget next year needs younger players who can play week in and week out and needs to trim the squad accordingly to that?.

Trouble is "one of the games" isn't good enough. How many games as he played the full 90 minutes in?

If we are to try and battle our way out of the National League we will need stronger and better players.

Hello. I never did really understand the transfer from Tranmere to Grimsby. It was really odd. Normally there is some kind of statement that says "We'd like to thank blah blah blah for his service, and wish him every success in the future". What we got instead was a terse "Stefan Payne has left the club and signed for Grimsby." And that was it. Bye bye Birkenhead.

We don't want him back.

Paul Hurst brought him to GTFC because he worked with him at Shrewsbury.

He managed to score one goal and create another with a short pass across the goal, other than that he hardly broke sweat and looked like he didn't give a toss.

He has been told he wont play again for us this season and I cannot believe Paul Hurst would sign him for next season even if we are in the hell hole that is the National League.

Morais is contracted for next season. Apologies if this has been stated but I've missed it if it has.

Don't know if many read the ex-player thread, but we will be up against him this season, he's joined Chesterfield.
