Should be an interesting watch tonight. BBC2 9pm and a change from a lot of the dross shown on TV these days.

I met big Jack at Hillsborough years ago when Town were due to play Wednesday.......but the game was called off think due to a waterlogged pitch....
He was their manager at the time and was a real gent........he came out of the players entrance and apologised to us all.....blaming the typical Yorkshire weather for ruining our day!
We then had fish and chips at the local chippy.......
Good days.....when we could pronounce every players name without an interpreter lol........

And your problem is......?

A large percentage of the current day un-pronouncable names are born and bred in the UK. Quite possibly as British as you are.

That's possibly why you got a plethora of red crosses

Very emotional

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

It was a strange programme in some ways. It was almost as if he was born after the World Cup in 1966. There were slight mentions of the upbringing that forged him, but they were slight. The bulk of the programme was about Ireland, the Irish and Jack’s influence with personality and wins in troubled times. Yes that was important but there was more to Jack than that.

There was plenty about Paul McGrath. What about Gazza, what about Newcastle and Sheffield Wednesday? What about his playing career and being a sponge absorbing lessons from Revie and Ramsey? Fleeting references there. I saw Jack play at BP in the old 2nd Division. How did that gangly lad get to be a crucial player for club and country?

I don’t begrudge the pieces on the Ireland job at all, I just think they were too long and repetitive to the detriment of neglected issues. When you’ve seen one Charlton session with Irish kids you’ve see them all. I wanted to know about the way he handled management stress by disappearing to fishing and shooting.

When this was billed I expected more too about his relationship with Bobby. There was some but we never got close to the reason for their fall out that saddened their mother to her grave. The dementia was dealt with well, Jack’s wife and son came over strongly and his son was right in his prediction, it was not dementia that killed his father. But there was a lot of footage that seemed to me intrusive and unnecessary of Jack clearly lost in his own world.

I am maybe over critical but here was someone I grew up idolising. Full of faults but a real character. Bland is never a word you could use about him, he was marmite. For such a very long programme I thought it could have been done much better.
