In this situation, it really doesn’t matter. You can play like Man City but if you score less goals than your opponents then you get nothing. Two weeks running we should have got points, instead a big fat zero. I pray we don’t go down but I think we will without external intervention. The positive is we’ll start a new season with different owners and a bit of hope.

I prefer Hurst and his play and I think he’ll keep us up. However, it’s factually correct that results are worse under Hurst

Oh give over ffs, this team will clearly be better when they’ve been together for more than a flipping week. It’s unbelievable, Christ they haven’t even learnt each other’s names yet and they clearly showed more footballing skill than than the last 20 odd games we’ve seen with Holloway’s shambles. Hurst has been here 5 flipping minutes and they look better.......the results will come.

To be fair, PSG probably is on the wind up, but we must have been doing better, points per game wise, than we are under Hurst?
Today and last Saturday have been an improvement in performances but before that, PH's first 4 games were amongst the most awful games of football I've ever watched (inckuding Sunday League).
As I said, and have done in Just Back thread, we looked like a competitive football team today though so hoping we can start scoring goals.

We've played one game with the new signings...1!...let's make comparisons once we've played 20 games with the players Hurst has signed .. No hiding the fact you're doing your best try to discredit Hurst but the comparisons to Holloway's pile of junk cannot be made as yet!!.

The quality of the squad that's what...And Hurst realised we were weak on the left, he got that sorted, we are no longer getting our ar£es spanked. It was never an easy fix and it was always going to take time.

We know that in terms of results things have got worse since the bald one left. But that’s mostly due to the mess he left behind. You’re an intelligent man. You can see what’s been going on behind the headlines. Performances are not meaningless. Improved results will lead to improved results.

Genuinely unsure if psg, who generally seems a quite sensible poster, is on a wind up or not. No doubting that the results under Hurst have been disappointing and you can certainly argue that at least under Holloway we were picking up the odd result. But I can pretty much guarantee that under Holloway we would have gone down. It almost had a Nicky Law feel to it, chaotic and random selections, sliding down the table with the odd win or draw here or there. No doubt about it in my mind, had we not made a sudden change we would have gone down. Hurst coming in is a line in the sand type approach. The rot was never going to stop immediately and he wasn't over night going to arrest that gradual decline in form and performance. What we are seeing now is his own team. I think it was one player in the 18 (Spokes) who was a Holloway signing and the big bulk of that starting eleven were actually Hurst signings. Progress for this team will take time, if we have that time is another matter. The options were quite simple: - Stick as was, go down regardless because we simply weren't good enough
- Make brave changes, regroup as quickly as possible and have a go at staying up. Effectively doing a rebuild job mid-season.
Anyone who thought it wasn't going to get worse before it got better is deluded, I'm sorry but they are. You can't put together a team in a short space of time and expect them to gel. Hurst has improved the team. The players he's brought in are better than what we already had. It's a flipping massive task to get this side to gel quickly and that'll be the biggest achievement of Hurst's career so far if he can do it. But to judge him so far on results is unfair in my eyes. I'd rather we spend a month getting things right, picking up no points, then having a real go at it rather than trudging through until the end of the season, picking up 3 points a month which will still leave us well short.

You know, when you have a wall that is tottering on collapse, the first thing you do is partly demolish it. Remove the defective bricks, clean up the ones you can salvage, buy new bricks and then start to rebuild the wall.
For a while your wall is partially destroyed and looks like a ruin. You may even need to rebuild the foundations. But once you have mixed some new mortar and relaid all of the bricks the wall stands tall and firm.
That's where we are right now. The wall is being rebuilt.

Team needed major surgery, then a period of recovery and getting back up to strength, which will take a few games yet. Would have been nice to pick up a few more points while doing so, but I believe we now have a much better chance of getting the points we need.

we just need to move the ball quicker, that will come with confidence as we play together more. If we had played Newport on a decent pitch maybe a different result on the day. I know its been raining a lot but we must turn our attention to sorting the pitch out asap!

Runaway would have taken us down. Totally agree with DHM. Holloway bought wrong players, inexperienced players, unfit players etc. And too many of them. Then he rotated players, diluting any quality, consistency and team spirit.
Hurst has time and needs time to keep us up. Rome was not built in a day. We have a lot of walls to rebuild.

Holloway signed experienced pros who are on the decline, and non-league players who don't look up to the job... and not a lot in between.
Can't say whether Holloway considered team dynamics, and how they'd fit together off the pitch. But I'm guessing that he gave this no thought whatsoever, which is why he attempted to strengthen the bonds with that cringe darts tournament.
No pre-season, no real method. I'm generalising, but people tend to employ people who are similar to themselves, and hold the same values as themselves.
In Holloway you have a bit of a loose cannon, whose scattergun approach to recruitment relied on mates as mad as him. Result? Montel Gibson on a three-year deal.
And Fenty was the one who appointed Holloway. I'll admit, I thought it was a good appointment, blinded by his over-achievement at Blackpool (and some relative success at QPR and Palace).
Appoint a studious manager like Hurst, what do you get? Diligent and sensible recruitment based on mentality first, skill a close second. Good attitude, committed to the cause, team player, something to prove.
People like Holloway can be impact managers; walk in, lift the mood, get a reaction. Hurst is more the opposite — plus, he's had to take time getting the right players in. Less of an impact and it's a race against time to see whether this will pay off in the long run.
I so hope it does.

Very good point, this. And its something I was thinking about this weekend. Hurst, as you say, isn't someone to come in and get an all-guns-blazing immediate reaction. He's more of a builder. Even at Shrewsbury, he had more time left of the season to build the type of group and dynamics within it that he wanted. Here and now, he doesn't have quite as long to build that togetherness and everything else that he likes. And the longer we go without a win, the more I'll start to worry. But I'm not panicking just yet.
