With all the new signings Hurst has brought in surely it is time to relieve Macca of the team captaincy, more so now his place in the team is under threat.

Who would you pick?

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Don't even know who's playing and where, so trying to fathom out who the captain's going to be is impossible at the moment.

Honestly, Hendrie or maybe Morais, was thinking Waterfall but if Macca threw him the armband it'd just go straight over his head!..

I think that Morais should be the obvious choice. Experience and leadership values.

I remember in Macca's (The original Macca) latter years at GTFC, he was made club captain while Justin Whittle was the team captain. Maybe something similar would appease everyone.

In terms of who that man could or should be, we should wait to see where everyone falls in the pecking order. At 35 and other options available will Morais play every week?

Ideally a holding midfielder or central defender. But I’m fooked if I know who is likely to get picked regularly enough.

Really we need leaders all over the park. Everyone to take responsibility for themselves AND for holding each other to account.

Six months ago I'd have said Waterfall.  He looked to be vocal, barking orders and holding people to account.  He doesn't look anything like that at the minute.  Maybe the armband could bring it out of him again, I dunno...

I'm with KM, ideally someone in defence or midfield.  The only other one with experience then is Rose but he's another who doesn't seem particularly vocal.  I'm not saying your captain has to be a screamer but it's horses for courses and at the minute I think we need a bit of warrior leading the charge.

Can't say I've seen anything in Morais to suggest captain material.  Looks a decent player but that doesn't make him captain material in my eyes.

Sometimes the captaincy can inhibit a player from performing his best role. It needs to be someone who has awareness and presence of mind, to see what’s going on as well as performing his own position. Easier said than done. That’s why having leaders across the team helps because it gives you that resilience.

Captains don't always have to be the most vocal in the team. Disley was never overly vocal but was a terrific captain as he was respected and lead by example!

Hendrie would be a good shout for me.

If we don't have an obvious captain, then that's another problem for the manager.

And we don't.

It's obvious, it must be our leading goalscorer Mattie Pollack.

Look what happened to Ryan Bennett when he was made captain.

True.  I think Groves was another who wasn't particularly vocal but led by example.

The difference is that Groves and Disley were surrounded by very good players at that level.  Players who were largely model professionals.  You think of the 1997/98 side and it many potential captains in it, some of whom went onto captain the team at various points.  Equally so with the sides that Disley was in.  It had natural leaders throughout.

We haven't got that luxury.  I'm not convinced that having someone in our side leading by example will see everyone else follow naturally.  I think we're in that situation where we need a sergeant major type who balderdash others into place.  Building a dressing room of leaders is one of Hurst's strengths and that will come with time.

True enough. Only took him 4 and bit years last time. Have some patience people.

No. Just like he has assembled a firefighting squad for 20 games I think he also needs a captain on the pitch who will gee up the players from the off. No time to waste.

Every player so far this season has been a nervous wreck on the playing field. They don't need somebody bollocking them for every mistake they make - there are different ways to instil confidence in a player. He knows when he has made a mistake.so no need to call him a frigging useless illegitimate - he knows he is.

It's not just about telling them they're useless.

It's about installing a regimented approach to them.  They lack organisation and accountability at the minute, I personally think we need someone out there who is dragging players into position to and screaming in their faces to do so.

Yes, I fully get the point about other ways to install confidence.  But confidence comes in many ways and sometimes it can come from that reassurance of knowing someone is there to bark the orders.  There's clearly no confidence or communication in our backline.

I can't think of many top teams that didn't have someone in their back line who wasn't afraid to upset people and say what's needed.   Even those teams that were full of model professionals who rarely fell out of line, just knowing the wrath that was coming from a mistake was enough to keep them on their toes.  Complacency has set in for too many in our team, it needs kicking into touch.  We don't have time to do it any other way.

If they have been nervous wrecks I shudder to think what they would have been like with fans in the ground. Probably burst into tears and run to social media.

A team captain needs to be mostly faultless in his play. He can't be berating others if he is making mistakes himself. He also needs to be an experienced campaigner with a lot of games behind him and respected by the players. He needs to be a fixture in the team, whose place is without question.

Do we have anyone like that?
