I’ve always rated Hurst in the recruiting market because of his level of background work, research and scouting he does.

I find watching Hurst at work in the market very exciting. Whereas with Holloway, I just got the feeling it was pot luck, where he would take any name in and give them a try, that his contacts chucked up, but with very little knowledge or research.

Phillip, the thought of you getting excited is not something I want as I tuck in to my breakfast.

Hurst will want people in who will listen to him from the start, and with no prima donnas in place.

Those in poor form currently will have to understand that they don't have guaranteed starting places and must up their game.

Turning into a winning team with some form of confidence will not happen overnight, so no wild posts demanding us turning into Juventus or Barcelona overnight either.

I expect dour graft filled matches from now until the season end - third from bottom will do this year in extremely lousy circumstances.

Might be off the mark but I wonder if runaway was on a percentage of transfer profit. Might explain bringing in so many inexperienced youngsters in the hope one comes good, and trying to get pollock a trial somewhere

Most managers have that clause in their contract I believe, didn't Newell try to claim some after his sacking?

This 100%.

I was totally won over. Couldn't believe he was our manager.

Started great, he was out and about, connecting with the community.

He then had to do his job, and it was awful.
If you listen back to his interviews, he seems to get his reputation from being chaotic in his interviews, as it gets away from how terrible he is at his actual job

To be fair to Ian Holloway as opposed to Paul  Hurst  has done well at a reasonably high standard at some of his previous clubs . I for one thought he would be a success here and surprised things went pear shaped for him.

he took players on heresay, never vetted them, and took them from his mates.....did you ever read about him being somewhere midweek watching a player?

His management of the players was negligent, he is the worst manager in the club's history, and absolute show pony, found out at the very lowest level. He protected his position by his bluffs and lies. If and when we do go down, he will be the main culprit, not on his own, but the main one.

I'd love to know the real inside story of what happened from late March to late summer.

That first transfer window Holloway absolutely smashed it.  Clarke, Benson and Glennon were incredible signings.  Even the other lads he brought in like Garmston and Grandin would have been a mark up on what we've had since.

OnThisGTFCDay tweeted out the memory from a year ago when we drew with FGR at home.  The football we played for the goals was great stuff. Playing it out from the back, intelligent hold up and link up, players going beyond the front men, a high press, lovely stuff.

It can't just be as simple as we went down the cheapo route, can it?  Even on a cheapo route, the recruitment was scattergun.  1 left back in the building and he was a young lad totally wet behind the ears, yet a gazillion midfielders in.

A good confidence trickster knows how to talk. The right language, the right buttons to press and makes you want to like them. Slowly and very slowly they suck you in, a bit of expectation here and there and then suddenly things go wrong.

Hey it's not my fault I'm a victim just as you are, or is it another line in the masking of their inept ability to do a proper job. Then we discover they are not what they have made themselves out to be and we've been coned.

Too late the damage has been done and they've got away with it. They move on to somebody else, their is always somebody else because they tell about their misfortune and how they, the victim!, were badly treat..

Any names come to mind?????

Guilty as charged. I too swallowed the hype. Part of it was down to wishful thinking though. I just wanted a savior who would turn it all around for us with his experience and extensive contacts.

Should have listened to the Leicester fans. He took them down to L1 in 2008

I think that’s a good description. He had most of us conned to a greater or lesser extent. Part of what determines whether or not a conman is successful is the willingness of the victim to believe. We were desperate for a brighter future. We felt we’d earned it. That metaphorical property deal looked too good to miss so we were all drawing down from our metaphorical pension fund of emotion.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

What a conversation it must have been between Holloway and May, 1 conmen trying to convince another conmen. With Mr Fenty stood on the sidelines learning the tricks of the trade ready for his next council meeting.

Like many of us. I can live with the fact that he was a terrible manager- God knows we've had plenty of those over the years. It's more the fact that he was a charlatan of the highest order that boils my urine. And I hear he's still living in town? I can't believe the nerve.

Perhaps Hurst should be saying thank you to Holloway for giving him a job where he can’t fail. If we go down it’s Holloway’s fault and if we stay up it’s Hurst’s genius.

Agree. Lots of warning signs with hindsight, but I never understood what happened to Garmston for example, and particularly agree the recruitment seemed chaotic.

Suspect he told the board he could fill the squad with loanees on the cheap and that was music to their ears.

Theres some irony in how often rent a quote Hollow-words would appear on national radio yet never really answered the questions of local journalists.

Why sign Scannell AND Bennett?  Taylor AND Morton?
Sisay? Mohsni? Gomis? Etc

Cant remember when it was precisely, when Waterfall was suspended?, but I clearly remember his arrogance in telling an interviewer how clever he was for knowing how versatile Hewitt is, which I think we all knew from the day he signed for Gtfc.

Ugh

I put my hand up as well.

I started to twig when I saw Holloway give a long interview to Sky Sports News(silly cap and all) and talked a load of contradictory nonsense of who should be helping the lower tier clubs through the pandemic. One sentence it was the PL clubs; the next sentence it was the government's responsibility. He made no sense at all and it looked as if he didn't have a clue. At darts I expect he would aim for treble 20 but end up hitting three. That's how much idea he had. I am ashamed I was taken in.

No you’re quite right and I 100% agree. Apologies. I feel so betrayed by a man who I thought was the best appointment for years, who turned out to be a delusional fraud.

I think the problem with Ollie started when JSF gave him so much control within the club. Ollie had never managed this low down so I'm guessing he thought it would be a piece of piiss with a lower league team. He wanted to do everything himself but after Lockdown1 in March he had the mat dragged out from under him. He was no longer in control. It was all out of his hands.

And that was when the dreaded C19-word destroyed what sanity he had left. He had to find an excuse for his failings to a) keep the players he had and b) keep spending to a minimum and c) recruit new players who were prepared to play for 75% of their usual wage.....hence the shitstorm he signed.

And all blamed on Covid. I seem to recall he mentioned it once or twice in his interviews

He could fool some of the fans some of the time, but not all the fans all of the time. We wised up to him and he jumped ship. He hadn't the guts or ability to save his own sinking mess.

He then blames Fenty for selling (something Fenty was on record for wanting to do) and the fans for getting rid of Fenty. As I posted earlier a conman and a deluded one at that.

Apparently oloway was after Shay McCartan when he signed for Ballymena United.

A source is reported to say "It is understood from a source close to the player that the Mariners were prepared to offer the striker a two-year deal to come to Blundell Park but the lure of being able to work full-time and play part-time at a comparable standard was too much for the former Burnley youngster".

So ex Bradford City man knew what a oloway team was going to be like. Unfortunately for us Shaun was right.

That can't be right.

Runaway trying to go all out for a player that went elsewhere?

I thought every player out there wanted to join us...

A good career outside of football and playing part time is much more attractive than 10 years of professional football with little to fall back on for the same money.
