Your dad was not treated very well when he was coming up to retirment.

Did Glen sign for Lincoln because Ron told him not to sign for Town ?

I've seen Cockerill in the Main Stand talking to Buckley a fair few times in recent seasons.

Isn't he a trucker? How did he find the transition from football to driving and how did he go about getting his licences? Was it through the PFA?

I believe there was a court case I think for unfair dismissal which ruled in favour of the club. It was Peter Ferneaux in charge at the time from what I remember. Certainly a sad end to John’s time at the club.

John. Thankyou for what you did in that game against Exeter. You are an undoubted hero around the club.

No question, I just think he deserves to know what he means to a generation of supporters.

John... During your time with the Mariners it was often said of you that you'd "run through brick walls" for the cause. Who, in your opinion, has done likewise for the Mariners, since you hung up your boots?

Who's the hardest player you've played alongside/against? And is it true that Fash mentally intimidated a then very young Mark Lever in the FA Cup game against the Crazy Gang at Plough Lane?

Great night with John and Glenn at Cleethorpes Golf club a couple of years ago.
Both of em great players at School, John was our  School team Captain

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

This.

John Cockerill was a great player and a good guy to boot. So many of my favourite town memories that I will never forget, involved him. Him and cunnington were brilliant in the middle of the park. We were spoilt and can only dream of seeing their like again at BP.

Yes to that. Amazing to think the guy was signed from non league at what 27  and 4 years later was in the championship with 2 promotions under his belt as an absolute irreplaceable part of that.

Not just that game, but for his whole time at Town. Don't think we have had such a midfielder like John since he left.

Thanks for putting that together. Really enjoyed it. Proper bloke and town through and through. Shame the club didn’t show him the same love he gave them. Hopefully those days are gone and Cockers can be welcomed back to BP and get the reception he deserves.

Yes and then it could be 'Cockers calling.'

'I walked in the dressing room. The window was open and I thought that a sea fret had got in. Then I saw smoke billowing from a pipe in the corner of the room...it was my centre-forward. Bloody loved the Sports Telegraph. My Dad used to send me down to the shop early Saturday night to get one and there was always a queue!

That was a fabulous trip down memory lane lads. Thanks very much. A good way to spend an hour.

Cockers is such a level headed bloke. For me, blokes like that represent the best side of Grimsby.

What does John think of the state of the club at present?
What a legend he was. Him and Cunnington together was just about as good as it got.
I remember he scored the winner direct from a corner against a high flying Wolves in the FA cup late 80s. Happy days

Remember his surging runs from midfield pointing to where he wanted the ball played which was duly found by childsy or Gilbert more often than not

I initially thought that there would be some spilling of the beans, but I don’t think it was the occasion. It was a celebration of John’s goal in the competition and his career with Town. His feelings came through. His eloquent restraint when they hedged around the subject spoke volumes.

Just had a listen, nice to hear Cockers.  Would like to have had him expand/quizzed a bit more on the nature of his departure that seems to still anger him.

Listened to this last night. Well done all concerned. It clearly meant a lot to John to play for Town for family reasons and for himself. And on top of that he got to serve in the RAF first!

Totally agree. Grew up with folklore about big characters, hard men and drinkers but it’s the friendly, unassuming hard working family men and women that made/make the town what it is.
