There’s a prolific goal scorer, well known in these parts, not getting a start at Newport. Just a thought.

Ha ha, I'll second that.

When I was working in London, I drove to Stevenage on a Monday morning then commuted in from there, staying in Stevenage overnight. The IBIS or the Holiday Inn Express being my hotel of choice. The biggest thrill was deciding on the train on the way back which eatery to give my money to. Nandos or Wagamama's on the retail park or the safe option of Weatherspoons next to the bus station. In the latter days, i may even have Deliveroo to the hotel reception.

Not every week but this happened regularly for 4 years, 2016 to early 2020.

All that time and I never knew you lived there, we could have met up for a pint!

Imagine having strikers good enough to be able to leave Podge on the bench, and that's after losing Matt to FGR.

having said that didn't Hursty always bring in some left field choice about who we had no prior knowledge?

He got plenty wrong.

He got plenty right and he got plenty wrong. Which is what you'd expect of any manager. Even the best.

I don't mean to be negative and I'm not being critical of the appointment, but this picture that's painted now of Hurst being a recruitment specialist is a bit off the mark for me.

Yeah he signed good players, and he also signed some terrible ones.
Brodie, C.Taylor, G.Pearson, Spencer, Hoban, Tomlinson, Straker, Fyfield etc.

He did have a decent record but was far from perfect. I'm not trying to say he was poor in the market, just that I think the views towards this should be a bit more balanced.

Just as a side note on the Amond topic.....

Isn't Owen Windsor supposed to be going to Newport on loan in January?

When you consider it was a Fenty budget and him negotiating contracts, there’s always going to be some misjudgements. At the end of the day, he always had us competing and that all I ask.

i am loath to disagree with your knowledge Tommy but i'd argue that some of them were loan/short term/back up players.
And i'd definitely take issue with pat Hoban, who someone else mentioned as a poor signing. OK he might not have pulled up any trees with us but i'd definitely say that Hurst spotted a decent player. Top scorer in Eire 2 seasons ago , he's score over 100 goals in nearly 200 games, winning the following honours, plus he's playing European football every year, & don't forget they've been in the Europa League group stage this year, where he's scored goals
League of Ireland Premier Division: 2014,[7] 2018,[29] 2019[33]
League of Ireland Cup: 2014,[9] 2019[41]
    FAI Cup: 2018,[42] 2020
Champions Cup: 2019[36]
President's Cup: 2019[31]

I'd look back on that and said i'd had a pretty decent career

Some forgettable names in that list, and indeed some I had forgotten. In particular C. Taylor - I honestly can’t place that name, can you help me out?

Hurst has managed 3 other clubs since returning.  Grimsby was his first managerial appointment.

It seems reasonable that his judgement of players has improved with greater and varied experience.

Forget that, Cleveland Taylor, I’ve got it. All I remember from him was an angry, shirtless celebration towards the end of one season. Don’t really remember anything else, good, bad or indifferent.

In an era when incomings and outgoings seem to be higher than previous decades all managers will get some right and some wrong.

The one year contract thing didn't help Hurst as it didn't other managers as it can force you to trade higher numbers which increases the chances of success or failure. Again having to use the loan market doesn't help sometimes.

I sense that you don't truly know what a signing is going to be like until they get a run in the side, which may explain why a number of Holloway's mid field and attacking signings look like duffers as the poor f*****rs never played 3 games in a row within a stable fist choice 11. The again it might be just that they aren't good enough,

Wasn't it cheeky Pat who was said to have fornicated with a female staff member we had for a little while - I seem to recall she was a physio or something?!

I’d say 5 or 6 names from five years at one club is pretty good going. Especially when a supposed top manager who assembled our current squad has recruited maybe double that number of terrible signings in the latest window.

FI gives some good mitigation for those names too. Further to those: Brodie was just a complete male private head.

Every manager gets things wrong and Hurst is no exception.

What he did have a knack of doing though was getting more right than he did wrong and moving any problematic players on quickly.

I was a huge fan of Podge, and was gutted when we stupidly drove him out of the club. But that was four and a half years ago. He is 32 now and probably not the player he was.

Ron give your head a wobble. He is a consistently excellent league 2 striker. He never had pace , just nous. Age isn’t an issue especially at 32.

Matt Green is 34 on Saturday. James Hanson is 33 and unfit. The rest of our strikers have little experience, or in some cases, ability.

I agree he is better than we have currently. He would probably work well with a fit Hanson, if we ever get a fit Hanson.

Not many (particularly as we only ever seemed to give out 1-year deals when in non-league), but thats part of my point. Every manager, even the best, will have plenty of signings on their record that aren't successful. It's all about evolving the squad over time and continuing to try and replace the poor signings with good ones.

Was going to make the same point as I recall Hurst was very quick to get rid when he believed he had made a bad signing.

Not many (particularly as we only ever seemed to give out 1-year deals when in non-league), but thats part of my point. Every manager, even the best, will have plenty of signings on their record that aren't successful. It's all about evolving the squad over time and continuing to try and replace the poor signings with good ones.

That’s the point though isn’t it, if they weren’t up to scratch they were quickly weeded out. I bet most of those players didn’t get to 20 games. The good ones played loads.

Thinking back Hursty did leave us with James Berrett who was certainly not one of his better signings to put it mildly!!!

I know there's not much chance but if Pollock is leaving in January I would see if Pearson would come back. Like I say probably wouldn't has he most likely settled in Wrexham with his family.

Scored a good and vital goal against Port Vale. But that was about it as far as I recall.

Berrett impressed me on his debut against Morecambe and I thought he looked quite good whilst Hurst was here, but as soon as Hurst went that's when he went downhill and he quickly turned invisible and did absolutely nothing in games.
