My apologies if it has had a mention here somewhere but I haven't seen anything about the sad death at the age of 64 of Paolo Rossi. Remember his fantastic hat trick  in the World Cup. Sad loss of a great striker

One of the stars of the second best World Cup ever. Loved Rossi.

He was a brilliant player and lit up the 1982 competition. But how many people remember he was actually banned for 3 years after the fixing scandal in Italy? This ban was reduced by a year which  allowed him to be selected for the Italian squad and  was a cause for comment at the time.  We will never know now what his role was, he always denied any involvement.

Rossi always claimed he was the fall guy in the scandal. Listened to his ex teammate Liam Brady who just said he was a lovely guy. He went to that World Cup on the back of three full games back after his ban, it took him three games to get warmed up, then he scored 6 goals in the last three games. Class

Yes, the ‘fix’ was for a biscotti draw and for Rossi to score twice

There was a strong lobby to get him available for the World Cup and it was done with not much time to spare. Seems significant that none of those like Rossi who appealed against bans were cleared of guilt on appeal. They were just granted leniency and the biggest beneficiary was the Italian national team.
