There’s a Big Match Revisited on ITV4 right now. Palace v Charlton from 1974. A Third Division game. 24,000.

Remember a Town game v Pompey from the third or fourth division being on MOTD too. Can’t imagine that being shown nowadays.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

Reminds me of how bad the pitches were back then.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Reminds me of Bradley!

I watched a bit of it. Hard to believe it was 46 years ago.

The Big Match was London based. We hardly ever saw it unless visiting or unless the northern games were off through bad weather.

I enjoyed the Newcastle/Man City game. Rod Marsh’s goal from Tuart’s cross was lovely.

The other noticeable thing - Ken Wolstenholme’s commentary in that game. It was at least 10 seconds between his comments which was brilliant. No stupid pundit interruptions either. We were able to watch the game for ourselves and Ken just gave us a bit of help now and again.

When a player went down injured back then they were actually injured, how times have changed.

Also the distinct lack of bookings that there was back then,

You'd have to nearly cut a player in half to get a booking back then. These days you only need to look at a player the wrong way to get a yellow card.

Also seems strange to see teams knocking it around the back four and then back to the keeper who then picks the ball up.

Yes Les, the media are always quick to mention that Gary Linekar never got booked, he played up front and in an era when bookings were a lot harder to get then today. Just think what you had to do in the 60’s to get a booking or even sent off.

If it’s the one where Tony Ford got 2 it’s definitely on You Tube.

That Town game vs Pompey featured in the opening credits of MOTD for a few seasons after that - used to show the players coming out of the tunnel
