Please tell me I'm not the only one wondering how Macca still gets a call up week after week.
He's a good shot stopper, but has no control over his area or the back line.
Why oh why do we persist in playing him?

DO NOT FEED THE TROLL

😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

Because the best keepers are now going for 70 million a pop. He's a league 2 keeper, and if he had a better all round game, the three year contract he signed would have been with a club in a higher division.

Did you see the Morecambe keeper on Saturday? He was about 20 pounds overweight.

He's a good stopper. End of!
No control over his kicking and frightened of crosses.
Dean Henderson showed him how to control and dominate a penalty area, surely he learnt something?

Doesn't make a thread when we lose 5 on the bounce and ship a lot of goals. We wina game and keep a clean sheet and now  decides to criticize.

It's not a case of " feeding the troll " but the OP does make a couple of pertinent points ie Macca isn't strong in the air and his kicking can be very wayward.Macca is a reasonable keeper for this level and was a good keeper when we were non-league. But if we want to progress to the next level then we do need better. I was very surprised that he got a 3 year deal in the summer, I think 2 years would have still kept him and that would give us some flexibility when/if we get promoted next season.

I hate threads like this, end of last season Mckeown was the best keeper in the world now we need a new keeper.

There is nothing wrong with Mckeown he's a solid good keeper.

Stop comparing him to Henderson because Henderson is a better all round goalkeeper, no disrespect to Mckeown.

That's why Henderson is on loan at Sheffield United, and future England International in my opinion.

So comparing Mckeown with Henderson is like comparing Hooper and Aubamyang totally different in way of talent.

Macca is a 7/10 Keeper for League 2 he ticks most boxes. However the faults he does have the main one being he fails to dominate his area causes us no end of problems during 90 mins most weeks.Usually this seeps out into his back four and causes them to panic in certain situations.Macca and Pearson were regularly seen arguing and Josh Gowling also got into that with Macca and it worked well they all gee`d each other up.Since Pearson went not seen much of that and our goals against column has grown noticeably worse over time.Macca over a Season saves us a lot of points with match winning performances ie we win 0-1 away and he will have made 2-3 top saves to keep the clean sheet. Then you ask could we do better you have to say yes because we saw the difference Henderson made to the same defensive unit and the goalkeeper became an 8/10 keeper better at commanding his area and far better with his distribution.

If we're supposed to be looking at the Championship in five years time, then we'd better hope we do get some promotions under our belt, sooner rather than later

Danny Collins has filled that "rant with Macca role" now so don't worry.

There is a clip on the Carlisle extended highlights were the simplest of over the top balls is being guided back by Collins but you can see he is expecting something to come from Macca...he waits..waits and then ends up playing a poor rushed pass out wide which is then poorly managed and quite easily could have resulted in a goal against..... Collins should have taken control as even i know that if the keeper doesn't shout you fking deal with it but its been the same ever since Macca came here.....no matter which centre back, there is a wide corridor of uncertainty (thanks Geoff) when the back four are seeing balls back to our box and Macca doesn't take control.

Surely you could have compared Hooper with a striker with an easier name to spell? Like Kane.

Henderson has comfortably managed the rise to League One and now The Championship, proving he was by far the best keeper in this league.

Macca has his faults but every keeper at this level does. He's a very good shot stopper and also good in one on one situations. Yes, he probably should command his area better but if he did, he would have never been at Grimsby Town in the first place.

Macca is a good L2 keeper,

If he was good at crosses and kicking like he is at shot stopping,

Hurst would have a million pound bid and took him to Ipswich with Toto and Nolan.

BTW  Hurst has just dropped his international keeper and put the reserve in,

So he might make a bid but it will be a lot lower than a million.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Leave it out Pete Ipswich are in deep enough excrement without putting Macca between the sticks. Ipswich ST holders I know don't rate Hurst or Toto but think Nolan is OK

McKeown has to make so many saves as he doesn’t collect the ball before it drops for a chance. If he collected crosses before they fall to the opposition striker then he wouldn’t have to make so many reaction saves. Preventing the chance is much safer than having to make the save.

stopping the cross in the first place would..... prevent the need to prevent the chance to make the save that wriggled and wiggled and tiggled inside her ...

He might well be a troll, but the OP makes a fair point. Once we've found our mojo again, I'd like to see Sam Russell in a run of games.

Surprised he's not improved sides of his game but either way one of the best keepers we've had in 30 years surely? He's not playing at championship level granted but he's as good as the likes of Crichton?
We could have somebody like Anthony Williams back.....

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

Macca does seem to divide opinion, but I'd make the wider point that because he main weaknesses are not controlling and commanding situations close to goal, his lack of authority and decisiveness affects others in front of him. The knock-on effect is low confidence and a panic prone group.

They are no way comments against Macca they are pretty unanimous stating he is a decent league 2 goalkeeper BUT he has flaws (which is why he is a league 2 goalkeeper) and we are questioning could we do better ala Henderson in on loan.To reiterate Macca does not let you down he is a dependable 7/10 most weeks BUT an 8/10 goalkeeper would make a huge difference to our points total. It`s such fine margins these days and this is a clear example.

What you are saying is that it is best to have 8/10 instead of 7/10-that's pretty obvious and must apply to any position so goodbye rest of team then as not many even get a seven. In this last couple of weeks we have had a go at the fullbacks, centre halves,Walsh, central midfield ,wingers ,strikers,Jolly,J.S.F. and now after our first win in yonks we are now saying we want a better goalkeeper. Far more important problems need sorting before demoting Macca just after signing a 3 year contract. I bet everyone in the team is now brimming with confidence after that win unless they read the Fishy.

Anyone in a team 3rd bottom of League 2 should be striving to play far better than they have so far fella. That`s not just a GTFC fan`s viewpoint is it,I mean who the fcuk expects to lose at home to sh1t like Morecambe? Anyway as you point out we won Tuesday it`s a new slate unbeaten in October so let`s just carry than on .Any Town player`s reading this you remind me so much of Barca at their best just keep it going lad`s and the goals will flow I will settle for 5-6 tomorrow and you can half that - goals column.UTM

Bear in mind that in our most recent relegation season Nick Colgan was our first choice keeper with Tommy Forecast and one or two loanees also appearing as we dropped out of the League.

McKeown may have flaws to his game, but there are plenty or worse keepers out there.

Russell always struck me as a good keeper and had more blinders playing against us than he did stinkers. However, he's signed up as a back up keeper so I wouldn't expect to see him playing barring a catastrophic loss or form or injury for McKeown.

N.B. 'Macca' should only be the nickname for players called McDermott if you're a GTFC fan.

He also said, I believe, that he didn't need a goal keeping coach as he was good enough without Steve Croudson.

Please tell me this isn’t true

I'm reasonably sure that is what was said. At the time I thought it seemed rather arrogant.

For me Macca is moving up into the “in my lifetime GTFC keeper league” along with Harry W, & Batchy. Yeah Danny Coyne was arguably the best “reaction save keeper” but Harry has the authority and Batchy was a great all rounder with a Burridge like character.

Why does Macca warrant being up with those lads?

- Half decent
- Won promotion and kept us up
- Loyal when better offers appear
- Nice bloke
- Approachable (though Batchy’s language was colourful).
- Made genuine mistakes

But most of all. They cared about GTFC.

Maccas made some unbeleivable saves in his time here, he’s been a great shot stopper some seasons as the stats used to show, no idea where we’d be without him. His overall game we all know has always had areas that could improve and hey you never know, many keepers play their best stuff in there 30s.

All I know is ive really enjoyed having him in our team over the years and hope hes still here for a long time
