We have only reached double figures with Shots on Target (according to the BBC) in the opening game against FGR. We'd have to have had a brilliant defence (which we don't) to have got much from the opening games with these stats.

Bury 2
Yeovil 5
Newport 0
MKD 3
Lincoln 3
Macc 4
FGR 10

I can't remember many of those from the FGR game!

You could have 20 shots that go agonisngly wide of the goal in a goal and yet have 0 shots classed as on target.

Equally so you could have 20 pea-rollers that the 'keeper can laugh at before stopping, these would be classed as on target.

We definitely need to tighten up our defence but we had two glorious chances in the first half against Bury (Cook and Clifton) which could have completely changed the makeup of the game.  Whilst I think we need to create more chances, it's the lack of someone taking them that worries me more.

Lincoln had 2 shots on target in the 3-0 win over Exeter, there was also an own goal. That's awesome finishing (or terrible goalkeeping).

You can hit the post 3 times and the bar twice and they all count as off target.

I guess this is why "expected goals" was created, to try to quantify how good the chances are, as well as how many.  Of course, the fact that it's completely non-intuitive (i.e. you need someone to tell you what the number is, you can't just tot it up yourself) makes it a rather less user-friendly stat.

But for what it's worth, here are the xG for us and our opponents in the games so far (from experimental361.com):

Grimsby 1.8, Forest Green 2.2
Grimsby 1.8, Macclesfield 1.6
Grimsby 1.4, Lincoln 1.3
Grimsby 0.6, MK Dons 1.6
Grimsby 0.3, Newport 1.4
Grimsby 0.9, Yeovil 1.3
Grimsby 0.6, Bury 1.6

Well, yes. The target isn't the posts, it's the bit between them.

It's amusing when people say a team is unlucky because they've hit the woodwork a few times during a game but failed to score - it's not luck - the shots just weren't on target.
