I'm not worried because they took York down, I'm worried because both of them look like they need to be paired with a hard worker. Summerfield is tidy but static and Berrett looks to have real quality but is not going to dominate the middle.

More balanced side though, particularly in midfield, were Berretts been wasted in the "lop-sided" midfield role he's had to play.

Pre season was shocking - I know it's about fitness but blah blah blah - we look a shambles defensively which is something we haven't really said before in the Hurst era. Midfield is weak and cannot penetrate enough. They look devoid of ideas. Chambers and Vose have been very poor so far since signing.

I really hope we can get another defender, midfielder and a goal scorer in before 31/08.

It was always going to be a tough start and i wasn't too hopeful for tonight. However, we seem all over the shop and to be three down and a centre half substituted before 45 mins is up is rather worrying. I'm not trying to be wise after the event but i think Boyce just isn't good enough and we are going to have to get someone else in pronto. Hurst and Doig are both ex defenders, so this area of the team should be performing better.

Tough baptism so far and it'll be interesting to see how PH handles it from here.

Well by your logic morecambe beat rotherham 5-4 who are a championship side so we should be well ahead of some mere ex-l1 side. The current scoreline is going to cause concern, probably get a couple of panic signings out of it. So the few thousand they tried to save in not offering some of last seasons players they couldnt refuse, if it hasnt been spent already we'll certainly be spending more than that this month. You can rely on Disley, what a servant he's been to this club. Great to see him back on the pitch.
I like him as a player.Has his weakness eg to weak in my view but technically for a lower league player useful

And theres me thinking it would of been a draw or tight 1-0 or 2-1 loss at best

Call me naive but its Colchester not Portsmouth.Having said that as stated early days so I hope this is a big wake up call

Told you 6/4 Colchester, you could have got £25 for a tenner

Looks like relegation might be on the cards again. If we can't even win against a team who might slip into play-offs, then we might as well pack it in now. Colchester could have scored 5 before half time, and 2 at least in the second half...... Not good enough,

Gods sake. It's the third league game of the season and already the doom-mongers are out.

It's a massively reworked squad, in a new league - give them a change to get into gear!

I said it before the season started - I have zero expectations for this season. I'll simply be happy if we can keep our heads above water and stay in the league this year!

Yesssss bogle, glad hes got himself off the mark
Also
I think weve had a run of difficult games, its just not nice to lose all 3 and some flaws with the squad have been highlighted. It just means the pressure is really on to get results in our next home games, two other teams whove been in league 1 recently too in reference to what other people have said about our chances against colchester

A little to late for the mariners, still 3-2 sounds a lot better than 3-0 doesn't it? No doubts we must tighten our defense, even if that means bringing in a few more players.
Posted by: mariner91, August 16, 2016, 9:30pm; Reply: 167
One positive is it seemed to tighten up a bit once Pearson was brought on.

Havn't listened to whole game as have been working but regardless of what shambles happened first half what has been noticeable from commentary is that at no point have the commentators described a Town player bursting past their opposition or leaving their player for dead...
very typical of a Hurst side....workmanlike solid players will always get preference and that leaves us wanting when we go behind.

Character to get a couple of goals back and no doubt Hurst will question the "penalty" we should have had but chuck away 3 goals and you aint going to win many.

Good fight back but can't allow a team such a big lead and expect to get any points! My main concern at the moment is that Hurst doesn't seem to know what his best 11 is or which formation suits them best! He's changed it several times already!
Posted by: ginnywings, August 16, 2016, 9:38pm; Reply: 173
Poor first half shows what Hurst has already highlighted after the last game, that we need an experienced centre back in the team.

Disappointed to lose but we showed character second half. Let's see what Saturday brings.

We need to win 13 matches more, that is all. Survival is the name of the game this season and push on from that next season! 53 points required. 13 wins and some draws!
Anyone who thinks we ought to be reaching play offs is on cloud cuckoo land in my opinion.
What we can do is turn up in numbers and get behind the boys at castle Blundell Park!
Two home matches now for hopefully another spurt of points!

I think thats natural when you have such a new squad, he can't know his best 11 and if hed stuck with the exact same team the whole time and we'd got the same results people would complain. its up to the players to perform to keep their place, only 3 or 4 have done that in the last few games

We sounded infinitely better in the 2nd half, sounded to me as if Summerfield was especially poor and Boyce more so. Pearson, Dis and hopefully McAllister back in Saturday. Dis, McAllister and Berrett sounds a decent midfield to me.

Whoever is brought in as the last central defender could be the deciding factor as to how we fare this season.

There do not seem to be any "weak " teams in the League and we need to be ready for the fray from minute one of every game. This level shows that chances have to be taken as other teams will take theirs - don't forget that Colchester were in a higher level last season, and will be sore at being relegated.

Ten games to make a fair assessment though, and a need for a tighter defense seems to be Hurst's priority currently.

Tonight, praise to all traveling fans, who did the team proud over the radio commentary.

We can't expect immediate miracles and I'm sure that Hurst will take both defeats personally.

Early days yet, I'm not sure how we will get on but from what I've seen, we could do with a striker, centre midfielder and centre half before the window closes.

Boyce Summerfield Again Poor - hurst would now have seen our worst 45 mins - so knows whats needed
Lot better second half
we need to settle into our stride and pick up the points req to consolodate
pen decision could have been a draw
fluke last min goal sat again could have been a draw
4 points next 2 home games
come on town!!

I fully expected us to lose what looked like a difficult game against a team who I reckon will be up there, so not surprised really. Early days yet, so I'm not jumping to conclusions or allowing my fears about a lack of quality at CB and CM to get out of hand. Two home games coming up. If we can win one or both, whilst getting a player or two in (we still need that 4th striker too), then we should be in an ok position. I'm sure Hurst knows what's missing from the squad. I am a bit worried (and have been for some time) about the relative merits of Berrett/Summerfield/Chambers and wish we could have brought in some midfielders with more quality and who were winners, but a bit early to be judging anyone too harshly.

On another night we might have got something out of this game, and probably a point from last Saturday. I think Colchester are a good team. Disappointing evening in lots of ways but we should be philosophical, learn from our mistakes and move on quickly.

Final point - I do wonder about our preparation and whether we are giving ourselves the best chance of getting results away from home by travelling long distances on the day. I think this is an area of expenditure the club has looked to curtail in recent seasons; reducing overnight stays and I think it needs reviewing. I thought I detected a little reference to this from PH in the post match interview.
