73 minutes of turgid tripe. Then we bring on Ainley and discover we do have someone who can play an incisive inviting pass that just begged to be buried in the back of the net. Suddenly the basics that were proving so difficult become easier and the black cloud is lifted and for 15 minutes donkeys become horses. Thank god it’s over.

Summed the game up perfectly
|
| Dead Eye Dobbin stood motionless waiting, waiting, waiting for the ball to arrive. Back came the right foot, Down came the right foot, Bang ! Headlines around the world as the ball flew into the very top right hand corner of the goal.( Jim Dobbin scoring in the 89th minute for Town against Newcastle United away 24/10/1992 ) |

Agreed Ainley made a heck of a difference Thought Holohan did ok compared to the last few performances but his rapid exit at the end made me think he knows his time at BP is over The formation didn’t match how Swindon set up so it was cagey for a while- vernam looked strong and good to see Maher do well especially with the long throws that Tharme usually takes. Swindon gave up after the second goal. That’s that. On to the next season, but as they say it’s the hope that kills you

In the post match interview, what you can make of it because the sound quality is dreadful, Artell says we will have a better team next season. And from the way he says it, it is clear he means a different team. I think he will have a massive clearout, and rightly so. We need players who can at least control the ball and pass to a team mate.
We need more players of the quality of Thompson, Rose and Tharme. Certainly three defenders, a couple of midfielders and a couple of forwards. Plus an experienced keeper. So eight at least.

Wilson and Green showed why you’d want both here next season, the latter looks much better not having to make last ditch tackles all the time. Vernham, Thompson, Rose, Smith, Tharm and one or two others also. We’ll see.
Also noted some very interesting comments from DA and JS today. Seems like Hurst didn’t do what was expected in terms of transfers or running the club. It’s yet to be seen if the preferred methodology bears fruit, but I’m prepared to back it with renewing my season ticket.

First half was a shocker. Everything changed when Andrews and Ainley came on and both goals were well taken In a sea of mediocrity stand up mr. Curtis Thompson for giving me hope Also thought Harvey Rodgers and Mullarkey looked ok against an abject but on the beach Swindon

A felt a bit sorry for Wood. He's a long way off being ready for men's football and his touch let him down today. I think he was probably overwhelmed by the pressure of the day.
Ainley looked like a footballer, Andrews did a really good job when he came on as well, winning tackles against their quick right-back and giving him something to think about.
Great finish by Smith (who I think would be worth keepin) and a really good one from Wilson as well. He did a decent job today, but I think the missed chances this season and lack of ability to retain possession if the ball isn't straight at him, make me happy to see him leave (which I think is likely). I'm still not convinced Green is ultimately good enough with the ball at his feet, but he's put in some decent performances over the past month, which might earn him a deal.
Lots of work to do in the summer, but at least the last game isn't going to be a stressful occasion!

Well it wasn't pretty and Swindon were well on top at points in the first half but we got there in the end. I thought Maher did well considering how long he had been out and Mullarkey looks a good player in the 3, reads the game very well. Brilliant goal by Wilson. How he scored that and not the one from 6 yards I don't know. He did superbly to create the chance then seemed to hit it into the floor. Overall his hold up play was decent, don't know if he still wants to leave but I hope he stays as he does have something about him. I'd see if Smith wanted to sign to, definitely an upgrade on what we have had recently. Hopefully we can keep Ainley, has certainly showed some creativity when he has been on the pitch. Special mention to Andrew's who I have always liked and he did very well when he came on, I like his passion, good luck to him. Speaking of passion it was quite sad seeing Holohan going off. He was not happy and kicked the seats in the dugout. Possibly the last time we will see him at home? It's a difficult one as I love the guy. There are times when he looks great but they are probably to many times when you can say the opposite. Looking forward to seeing what Artell can do and hopefully seeing some better football.

A game that was consistent with most of this season, interrupted by 2 decent goals.
DA will needs to keep only 7 to 9 of this squad and needs to do major route canal surgery.
As the season closes and the disappointment and frustration of this season begins to fade over the summer, I know my hopes will rise once again with the inevitable new signings that will be announced and the over optimism that follows as every new season approaches.
This will all be embraced again.
I shall be back again next season, as this is the way it is as a supporter.
My fingers are crossed and soon it will be here we go again.
Not the worst season but certainly in the bottom 10 of the last 40 perhaps.
But Grimsby till I die is just that.

In all honesty Swindon gave the impression that they would much rather Grimsby retain league status as opposed to Sutton. They went through the motions and the number 5 had more touches in the first half then most get in a season.
Was amazed at the starting line up and didn’t think Wood should have started as he’s shown his best qualities coming on with 20 minutes to go. Spent the first 60 minutes giving my brother ear ache as to why we would select a youngster in a game of this magnitude when we had a guy on the bench with 250 plus league appearances under his belt. Swindon offered little and our attack was pretty toothless until we actually scored two quality goals and then with good movement and passing from Khouri, Andrews and Ainley we played our best football but in reality Swindon weren’t offering much resistance. Great tackle from Maher near the end to help keep a clean sheet but Eastwood didn’t have one shot to save did he?
Please don’t fall into the trap of semi decent performances from players today mean they are worth keeping we need a wholesale clear out with some of the better players being squad players next season.
In reality today all that mattered today was getting the points required that was done and we can all now relax for a few weeks before the merry go round starts again!,

Celebrate the 3 points but that's about it. Started bright but after about 25 mins and some wasted chances we regressed and looked sluggish. Swindon didn't look that @rsed about really going for it but moved the ball about comfortably.....game petered out to nothing until the triple substitution... livened us up in the middle and Ainley showed some good composure and awareness....pretty much his first touch played in Smith and ....SMASH! season over. Wilson lovely strike for the second , glad he got one as really wasn't given a great deal to feed off otherwise.
Invaluable 3 points taken from a team that really looked disinterested but all too late to convince me that most of the squad shouldn't be binned off.

It's a shame that Wilson seems keen to move on. I thought he was a real pest today. Led the line well alone having to feed off little quality. Great finish as well.

Poor game, poor teams, up until the first goal it looked like the game plan was “get in the final 3rd & make it up as you go along”.
Only real pieces of quality was Ainley’s pass and Smith’s finish.

Wilson's finish was better. Keeper got a touch on the first and could've saved it.

But he didn’t save it did he? Striker scores from distance under no real pressure from defenders, right back takes quality pass, in on goal & slots home showing strikers how to score, well that’s how I saw it. Wilson is the biggest flat track bully I’ve seen in a Town shirt for ages.

Sorry but his goal was a belter. Right in the corner and moving all over the place so the keeper stood no chance. He’s plenty good enough to stay, hope he does.

Was right behind them both and from what I saw the second was miles better. Smith's only went near the corner from the touch off the keeper, still did well to get it in though. I agree with the showing strikers how to score bit. Wilson should've buried that earlier chance that he did well to create and in the last home game he definitely should've had 1 or 2. Also agree that it was an inch perfect pass, he looked miles better than our other midfielders even in that short time, hope he signs for next season.

Agree about the quality of his goal but his overall performance was, IMO, poor. He struggled to get the ball under control, is weak in the air and doesn’t have the required work rate and energy levels. We need much, much better.

Wilson has 7 goals in 26 games and only 12 of those games have been starts, it’s not a bad record. He’s strong and he can finish, but he too often goes missing completely in games.
He’s definitely worth having in the squad IMO because you’ll probably struggle to replace his attributes for somebody willing to come off the bench more often than not. However I reckon he’ll probably force a move himself.

Ainley showed immediately the difference that a proper footballer can make.
Swindon were pants but just having someone with that quicker thought process and ability to put it into action transformed that game.
Defence was and has been fine for weeks largely, thought Maher looked excellent considering he's missed so many games. Cannot believe the change in Mullarkey by stepping inside, thought he too was excellent again.
Wilson did well up top on his own. Don't get the criticism of him, if he was putting every chance away he's levels above us. He's a handful and they couldn't handle him second half. It's almost as if he needs to believe he can dominate teams before he goes onto do it. He gets that sorted and he's one of the top strikers in this league.
Lack of options dictated that 3-3-3-1 formation, which we struggled to adjust to early but second half the front 3 helped Thompson out a bit more and we bossed the middle of the park.
Bramwell looked an absolute unit when he came on. Seen him a few times now and he looks potentially a real player.
It's not over, but it is. excrement season, glad it's done. Big summer ahead.

Wilson suffered from what most strikers playing in poor teams suffer from- a lack of service. Not everyone needs to have a Danny Rose type workrate but yesterday (and the previous home game) most of his chances came from his own efforts. I really hope he stays. With the right support he's probably a 20 goal striker. The criticism of him on this thread reminds me of the similar stick one Danilo Orsi got last year. Remind me again how that turned out.

I like Wilson but in terms of bullying defenders, LJL was much much better at it. Wilson was playing against a 16 year old kid and didnt really get going until the second half.

Not a season I will remember with any fondness. I still can’t work out how in our early season game at Bradford we were in second place in the league at half time., but slumped so badly thereafter.
I remember Conte dominating and Clifton having a shocker. Good performances from Gnoha, Mullarkey and Rose…….
Hoping for a much higher level of consistency in 2024/25.

I thought Wilson was brilliant yesterday. Basically feeding on scraps all game and scored a superb goal but he’s obviously not happy here so he’ll go and probably do very well for someone down south . Swindon we’re garbage and most players looked to be at about 50% .

I’d keep him. He wants focusing, coaching and to work on his fitness but he’s got plenty of attributes. Get him clicking with a run of games, a better formation and partners closer to him and he is a genuine threat at this level. He had a really good game yesterday and his goal was a piece of technical quality.

Agree with you about workrate and I was one of a minority on here who rated Orsi and wanted him selected far more often last season. He had, what I believe Wilson doesn’t, and that’s a bit of composure when a chance comes along. Wilson always appears rushed to me and doesn’t get the ball under control quick enough. Anyway a game of opinions and we’re going to find out what the management group thinks in a weeks time.

Wilson is decent. Big, strong, fairly quick and has scored a few goals. Would've been comfortably in double figures had he started more often. The games he has played with Rose they have looked a decent pairing. Those two would be a good base to add another couple of signings to.

8 goals in 1294 League 2 minutes this season, can't grumble with that.
Also, how can he be a flat track bully when we're the fourth worst team in the division?!

Not doubting his ability which he seems to have plenty of, just his application. There should be no expectation every player should cover the yards Rose does but every player should be expected to get their foot in when required.

One thing he certainly isn't is big. I wouldn't say he's quick, either, though he's certainly not slow. He's strong on the ball if it comes straight into his feet as he can then often hold off the defender. If the pass isn't straight to him and he has to move for it, he loses possession more often than he should, in my opinion. Doesn't seem to anticipate the movement of the defenders and allows them to get their foot in or their body in the way. I suspect he will be on his way in the summer. He was set to leave in January and I don't think we'll want him enough to see him stay, especially if he wants to move back down south as was rumoured. Wouldn't surprise me if he went back to Sutton, truth be told, providing they've got some reasonable funding next season. That said, the lure of League football is a big one for players and he's theoretically in the prime of his career right now.

he seems decent, but I think all of our retention decisions should be based on one question; Can we get better? If no them keep whoever it is. if yes then don't. It is all about improving what has been a demonstrably poor squad. After 45 games the table does not lie.

He’ll probably sign for Crawley and score 18 goals next season. He wants convincing to stay and coaching and he could be great for us next season. I’d definitely persevere with him. I’d let go of Pyke and Eisa and Gnahoua and bring 3 better forwards in to go with him and Rose.. I’d be more than happy with that.

I like Gnahoua as he looks after the ball really well and has a lot of skill. Didn't perhaps achieve enough (when he was fit), but would probably have done better if we'd had a half-competent midfield most of the times he played. Same goes for any player, I suppose.
He strikes me as the sort of player that Artell should like but his injury record may rule out a new deal.
There's probably some sort of a player in Pyke, but it's certainly not a striker so I can't imagine he'll stay, especially as Artell hasn't played him, even though he should be fit again, I think? Another who has been crocked for most of the season. Eisa is a good time player, effective when things are going well, invisible when they aren't. Unless we're going to be a top team in the division next season with a dominant midfield, we don't want him.

H'mm, Hurst loves going after previous players he signed, I wonder if he will come in for Gnahoua and Eisa . . .

Gnahoua I’m afraid to say has been a waste of a wage. He’s too injury prone and will be on his way.

Gnahoua technically is probably one of the best in the squad. He looks after the ball very well and is also a real grafter. But his end product is non existent. We need people further up the pitch who are going to hurt teams.
You can read between the lines Artell's thoughts on his injuries whenever he's asked what the situation with him is. I would honestly be shocked if we offer him a new deal.

Something that's been non exsistent in his career which is probably why he spent so long in the national league because technically he's very very good, can imagine he's horrible to play against five a side

Definitely! I was really impressed the first games with him but then soon thought he looked better suited to Futsal than 11-a-side football!
Ultimately just doesn't do enough to hurt teams. Can see why Hurst signed him as he's very much in the Joe Colbeck mould of a very hard working winger who will run his legs off and protect his full-back. But we need players who create/score in his position.
You've got the extreme in Abo Eisa who still has decent high level numbers despite a virtually non existent final third of the season. 9 goals and 4 assists from 2259 minutes (contribution every other game). But his workrate is absolutely shocking and one of those players who if he isn't scoring will offer you very little, early doors he got away with it as he had the golden touch. Surprises me that Hurst has signed him 3 times.

He likes the odd 1 and get's the others grafting around them It will be interesting to see at what level a team picks Eisa up as his underlying numbers are good - possibly a lower end league 2 club ? Suspect Arthur will head to NL

How do you know this please? As far as I can gather, these are just rumours that have been spread on the Fishy. Does anybody have any facts about Wilson wanting to leave?

DA said on the press conference after the window shut that Wilson was due to leave but Crawley didn't file the paperwork in time.

Was Wilson desperate to leave though, or was it more a case that he felt he had to because he wasn't getting a game? (This was around the time Obikwu was coming on and looking like a competition winner).

Interesting that Artell was happy for Wilson to leave in Jan, which was opposed by many on here as we had so few options. That judgment of Artell was proved wanting as we used him numerous times after that and in fact for the vital game against Swindon we'd have had no strikers at all if he'd been allowed to walk away. Doesn't film me with any more confidence about his judgment than our results have to be honest.

I guess not unfathomable that Wilson and Artell have held talks about what each party wants.
Wilson wasn't in the squad for the two games after the deadline day mishap with Crawley. Since then in every single matchday squad, starting 9 of those 15 games. His first start in that run was the 1-0 win over FGR when he was paired up top with Rose and very much as the No. 9, to my mind the first time we'd seen him in that role. Artell giving him a fair run in the side came less than 2 months into his reign as boss too.
He's only scored 2 and made 1 in that period, which is no way near the 5 goals in 4 starts and 8 sub appearances earlier in the season, but his all round contribution is far greater.
The important thing is that Wilson has shown what he can do. The assist at Crewe and the goal against Swindon are exactly what I think he's best at doing, pretty much bulldozing sides. If he's paired with a player/players who can buzz around him and be more prolific, he's someone I want here next season.

Wilson wanted to move back down south, wasn't down to Artell not wanting him here.

Without his judgement signing Thompson and dougie we’d probably be playing the scunts next year …don’t lose sight of the fact hursty left us with a team full of dross and average players

Correct. Artell said in interview that he didn’t want him to leave. I think he is not the sort of guy that is going to stand in the way of a player that wants out, it would hardly be good for morale forcing players to stay against their will. But once the deal fell through it looks like they made it work because Wilson put in a decent shift afterwards. So criticism of Artell’s judgement over this is not justified in my opinion.

Totally different not standing in a players way when it's the summer, but in January, at the deadline so he can't be replaced, in the midst of a relegation battle, to just allow him out of his contract cos he fancied being somewhere else was as bad an idea as it sounded. We only had 1 other proper first team striker, an u23s kid and a wide right player who Hurst fancied having a go up there. Wilson was contracted, we needed him, on occasion we would have had literally nobody to play there if he had been allowed to walk as Artell intended. Nobody would have been saying Artell was blameless if the paperwork had gone through on time when we were up excrement creek against Swindon with nobody to play up front. Nevermind all the other times he played since the move fell through. Sure tell the guy he can go in the summer, but sorry we need you for the battle ahead - of course this was when Artell was still spouting the delusion we weren't in a relegation battle which was why he complacently thought Wilson could be allowed to leave, he didn't think it mattered. Poor judgment

We had a forward lined up to replace Wilson that fell through on deadline day, whether that was down to Wilsons paperwork failing or other reasons we'll never know. If Wilson was allowed to leave, Gardner probably doesn't go out on loan and would of probably played up front against Swindon. Wilson didn't leave so he was played up front against Swindon... he didn't leave so it wasn't poor judgement. Keeping a player against his will would of been poor judgement.

We were looking to bring a forward in on loan but that fell through.

As regards next season, I would rather the playing budget was spent on a smaller but better quality squad with eager young home grown players on the bench.
