A cult hero, a club stalwart, and choosing the present over the past and the future back in 2000.....

Handyside was definitely the better player, and it was shocking that we were paying Enhua £13k a week, with a better player on the bench.

At that point in time the board allowed Lawrence to throw money around left right and centre, spending itv digital money that was never to arrive.

If only we hadn’t blown that money, we wouldn’t have needed the fire sale of players, and our spiral down the leagues wouldn’t have been as painful.

A rule in finance (and life really) to always count all debts, and potential debts as costs to be met.

Future income should only be considered or planned for when physically received.

ITV Digital is a perfect example.  As shown above.  No wonder we suffered more than other Clubs.

I really don’t believe that he was paid 13K a week. That must be b0ll0cks.

The club accounts show our total staff costs went up 46.3% in 2000/01 from the previous season.

It was 7k a week but we paid for loads of family to come over and paid for their accommodation. It was certainly a number way in excess of any other player we've had. Not sure if the 7k includes the extras or that's where 13k comes from.

It's a shame really, a few years later Arsenal and then Everton had huge interest by signing Chinese players with new sponsorship and commercial revenue. Maybe it's because we weren't in the Premier league, or maybe we were just slightly too early to reap the rewards.

It was what the full package turned out to be worth (ie accommodation costs, flights home etc etc)

As  I recall He was only here for a few months towards the end of the season you can pay those figures if you are only paying for 2 or 3 months of season rather then full 12 month contract

Checking back he was on a three month loan so if he was on £7k a week that is £100k . He played 17 games in that time and played a big part in keeping is up .That sounds like pretty good business to me.

We stayed up on the final day that season. Staying up meant we got £2,5m of ITV digital money in 2001/02. If we'd been relegated it would have been a fraction of that. Whatever we paid for Zhang Enhua was a bargain.
