Back to last season’s luck of the draw.

Unfortunately we don’t have two of our best cup performers, Orsi or Crocombe…

Unlucky to have 5 consecutive away draws (also 6 in 7).

The only away defeat (before Oxford if we play them) was to Brighton, who are doing quite well in the PL.  Not sure how we managed to this,  especially if the team last season is not considered as good as this season!  Last season we had more fight and determination.

Yes I was thinking that. The law of averages says we’re due a home tie, I think.

I just got back from watching Charlton get behind-clowned by Clay Valley Paper Mill.  On the evidence of tonight's game i'd say Charlton away next round (plus its 15 mins walk from home)

Clayt Valley deserved to win as well.....     It was a weird match as most of the Clay Valley fans were also Charlton fans....

Just the small challenge of winning the replay and beating second in League 1 Oxford to go yet.

We're not close to that many places. The top 30 cities in England/Wales are

London - 145 miles away
Birmingham - 100 miles
Liverpool - 120 miles
Bristol - 170 miles
Manchester - 80 miles
Sheffield - 60 miles
Leeds - 60 miles
Leicester - 80 miles
Coventry - 90 miles
Bradford - 70 miles
Cardiff: ~170 miles
Nottingham - 50 miles
Hull - 30 miles
Newcastle - 150 miles
Stoke - 90 miles
Southampton - 190 miles
Derby - 70 miles
Portsmouth - 200 miles
Brighton - 190 miles
Plymouth - 270 miles
Northampton - 100 miles
Reading - 150 miles
Luton - 120 miles
Wolverhampton - 100 miles
Bolton - 90 miles
Bournemouth - 210 miles
Norwich - 100 miles
Swindon - 150 miles
Swansea - 190 miles
Milton Keynes - 110 miles

Average Distance = 3875 miles / 30 ≈ 129 miles

Oxford is 130 miles away so is more or less what you'd expect from where cities are located. Most population is clustered around the big cities.

Yep, as the crow flies. We know full well how long it takes to get to Southampton and Brighton - it’s a nightmare!

It is not just all the away games, or even the long distances to travel.  It is the quality of the teams we have been drawn against.

We only beat 5 teams from higher leagues because we had to play them.

In the first round last year we drew the top possible team Plymouth. This season we play Oxford (if we win the replay).  They are clear 2nd in Div 1, top scorers in the division.  Only Portsmouth have conceded fewer goals as well.

A very tough match for us.

We have just played a team 2 divisions below us though, and the previous year we played 2 teams in leagues below us (one of whom beat us), so I think you are guilty of some confirmation bias in overlooking these! After Round 1 nearly every team is above us in the league anyway, and that becomes increasingly the case as the draw progresses. Given we are at the edge of the country and a low-ranking side we'd generally expect to get quite a few games against better, relatively distant sides. Even home draws were about level last year over the two cup competitions, but people tend to remember that we got a lot of away ones (more confirmation bias probably).

That crow must have the positional sense of the Town defence if it's taking 30 miles to get to Hull.... strong tides I guess!
