Recruitment - who carries the can? đĽâ˝ď¸â¤ď¸UTM
I love the Grimsby Town - just want us to make the right decisions - hope the new(ish) board can take the Town to a good place. Very good start đ Donât know how previous boards managed to get us in to reasonable positions in the last 100 or so years - but I think it was probably people skills. A lot of time with successful periods starting with the youth of the area. Growth takes a while, and I know time is always short. Perhaps Paul didnât buy in to that philosophy. It may take another relegation but growing youth can pay dividends - as it did under John Newman / George. Kerr

This club can NEVER, EVER go down to non league again. It should be written into the FA rule book. No more of that sh#t for us, no way.

No - serious. Town needs to gather its Grimsby / Cleethorpes youth to fruition. Can reap rewards - as experienced in the late 70,s - Donovan, Drinkell, Ford, Moore, Moore .Moore again Paul led Town back to the EFL but little progression from youth. Hence , a Recruitment Manager Analyst to select the current players (I contend). Would love to see Grimsby Town win the FA Cup pre my demise ( nothing wrong at the moment)

You cannot do it the old way with youth, the financial gap between small clubs and even medium size clubs is too big, they will just take any promosing young players off you, and the current rules say they can..

But the difference from the 70s and 80s to the youth players of today is todays spend 2 or 3 days a week at college doing all sorts of useless courses, whereas back in the day, all they did was learn their trade and play football. This is why the youth players today dont come through the ranks successfully as much as those from decades ago

Seem to think Ryan Bennett came through at a very young age whilst attending Grimsby Tech / College. Just need to be spotting very good youth footballers in the area quicker - and then signing and retaining them. That used to happen.

Ryan Bennett was kicked out of Ipswich due to his attitude and joined GTFC early in his 1st year as a YT. He was recommended to Neil Woods by someone he knew at Ipswich.

I realise he came from Ipswich. What a piece of luck for Grimsby Town - would be great if North East Lincs could produce a few more - Harry Clifton in recent times has done us proud. Hopefully, the Town scouting set up has got its tentacles out with sports teachers from the local secondary schools - thatâs what used to happen - and some very talent came to fruition.

Sorry it just does not work like it did back before the Premiership years. The Premiership is like a black hole it devours everything in its way. With the rest of the scouts scouring every inch looking for players, being local has nothing to be with anymore. Youth players can earn more just being at Premiership or Championship than what we can offer our first team players.

Price of petrol - some parents may think transporting their sons to Grimsby from Waltham May be a better bet than Sheffield United - I mean - whereâs the local pride gone?

The youth team you speak of was a once in a generation event. To get that many coming through was exceptional. The same applies to Man U., they had their once in a generation youth team with Scholes, Beckham etc. They haven't managed to re create it either.

So it begs the question - where have all of the players in the EFL come from ( most of Premier from overseas) - if youth systems - such as Man U - have been scrapped - as you infer?

I didn't say or infer it has been closed. It hasn't. What I was saying is that to get that many players from the youth team at the same time is the exception. Incidentally did you see that Liverpool v Tolouse, they had over half a dozen players that had come through their youth team? Liverpool seem to buck the trend when it comes to giving youth players a chance.

Ben Grist is the perfect example of what happens if you have a decent player coming through the system. One of the Premiership or Championship clubs come and take them away for a pittance and it really makes you wonder whether the costs of running all these teams at junior and youth levels is actually worth it? Letâs face it in the last ten years we have probably had just had Harry and Max come through the system . Max had the talent but not the physique for professional football and Harry is Mr 100% effort but not enough natural ability.
Itâs a very tough task to get someone from the under 9âs to the first team and IMO pretty much impossible.

Yes - Liverpool do do this - probably because the City is a very enthusiastic and capable football city - bottom line

Might be better if there are no under 9 teams etc attracting attention and let the secondary schools nurture these lads / girls under the radar, with a good relationship between the schools and Town via the games teachers, as it used to be

No argument from me. Kids get associated with clubs from such a young age and many are then prevented from playing with their mates whilst parents travel up and down the country just with that vague but unrealistic hope that their child will make it and not be one of the 99% who donât make it. All rather sad really and I personally donât think kids should be linked to clubs until they are at least 15 but the clock isnât going to start turning backwards so we are stuck with the current system Iâm afraid.

If the club can get its bottom back up the pyramid then the club becomes the magnet for the talent in the wider area of Lincolnshire.....years in non League and the bottom end of League Two doesn't make you attractive to anyone who isn't a Town fan..or child of Town fan. We have had Lincoln, Scunny and Hull all Leagues above us at some point in the last ..20yrs ?? ....currently only Scunny below us...so we are the 3rd attractive out of 4 currently...and that's just in the immediate area...any highly talented player could be hoovered up by a club even further afield.

Don't want to be rude, what planet are you from? The guy was pointing out Man Utd had a once in a generation under Fergie when a group of players came through at the same time.

Yeah it's possible to have a good long career at a high level with the right attitude. Would Mark Lever have played so many Championship level games for any other Championship club? He did the job he was told to do, and he did it well with a great attitude.

I have been to many youth team games over the last 15-20 years and the current team is probably the best Iâve seen. We could lose a few of them to bigger clubs if we donât lock them down soon!
