On Channel 5 tomorrow (Tues 18th July) there is a 90 min programme about the 1953 (sea) flooding.

42 people were drowned in East Lincs costal towns.  Many ships were sank in the North Sea due to the severe storms. A wind speed of 124 MPH was recorded.

The total death toll was over 2,500 - the vast majority in Holland.  This’s was the biggest peacetime disaster in Europe.

Our farmhouse in Mablethorpe was exactly a mile from the sea.  It was still flooded to a depth of 2 feet.  As a kid I wondered why there were salt lines 2 feet up from the floor.  They were  still there even after re-wallpapering.

My Dad has told me the story of how they were going out of the front door as water came in the back door. I think he lived in one of those side streets not far from Blundell Park. He was a young kid back then.

I remember relations telling me about the floods of 1953 growing up.

On the same subject they've done refurbishment work in places like Louth to stop floods affecting the town which has happened in the last 20 years or so .

In the 60's town's pitch was under water from a very high tide in fact houses were flooded up to Brereton Ave.

I was only 5 in 1953 so can't remember that one.
